Brian Everitt "Chance Rules: An Informal Guide to Probability, Risk and Statistics"
Publisher: Springer | Edition: 2008 | ISBN: 0387781293 | PDF | 209 pages | 2,82 Mb

Chance continues to govern our lives in the 21st Century. From the genes we inherit and the environment into which we are born, to the lottery ticket we buy at the local store, much of life is a gamble. In business, education, travel, health, and marriage, we take chances in the hope of obtaining something better. Chance colors our lives with uncertainty, and so it is important to examine it and try to understand about how it operates in a number of different circumstances. Such understanding becomes simpler if we take some time to learn a little about probability, since probability is the natural language of uncertainty.

Jeffrey Hollender, Geoff Davis, Meika Hollender "Naturally Clean: The Seventh Generation Guide to Safe & Healthy, Non-Toxic Cleaning"
Publisher: New Society Publishers | Edition: 2006 | ISBN: 0865715483 | PDF | 208 pages | 5 Mb

Compelling evidence links the chemicals in household products to cancer, asthma, allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome-also known as environmental illness-hormonal disruption, reproductive and developmental disorders, and other conditions. Yet cleaning products are exempt from the full ingredient disclosure on product labels as required for food and personal care products and enter the marketplace with little or no testing for potential health risks.
Naturally Clean explains the dangers of traditional cleaners and provides illuminating statistics that illustrate how the chemicals found in almost every home are known or likely to cause a host of serious health problems. The book's easy-to-understand introduction discusses basic household chemistry, concepts of toxicity and types of toxic exposure, and the difference between natural, organic, and synthetic chemicals.

Saskia Sassen "Global Networks, Linked Cities"
Publisher: Routledge | Edition: 2002 | ISBN: 0415931630 | Djvu | 300 :pages | 9,14 Mb

In her pioneering book The Global City, Saskia Sassen argued that certain cities in the postindustrial world have become central nodes in the new service economy, strategic sites for the acceleration of capital and information flows as well as spaces of increasing socio-economic polarization. One effect has been that such cities have gained in importance and power relative to nation-states.

Sonu Bedi "Rejecting Rights (Contemporary Political Theory)"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0521518288 | 220 pages | PDF | 0,98 MB

The language of rights is ubiquitous. It shapes the way we construct our debates over issues such as abortion, affirmative action and sexual freedom. This provocative new study challenges the very concept of rights, arguing that they jeopardize our liberty and undermine democratic debate. By re-conceptualizing our ideas about limited government, it suggests that we can limit the reasons or rationales on which the polity may act. Whereas we once used the language of rights to thwart democratic majorities, Bedi argues that we should now turn our attention to the democratic state's reason for acting. This will permit greater democratic flexibility and discretion while ensuring genuine liberty. Deftly employing political theory and constitutional law to state its case, the study radically rethinks the relationship between liberty and democracy, and will be essential reading for scholars and students of political and legal philosophy.

Jeroen Hinloopen, Hans-Theo Normann "Experiments and Competition Policy"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0521493420 | 328 pages | PDF | 1б41 MB

Over the last decade, economists have been making much greater use of experimental methods in their research. The award of the Nobel Prize in 2002 to Vernon Smith confirmed that the use of such methods is now seen as an important and credible part of the economist's toolkit. In Experiments and Competition Policy, leading scholars in the field of experimental economics survey the use of experimental methods and show how they can help us to understand firm behaviour in relation to various forms of competition policy. Chapters are organised in terms of the main fields of competition policy - collusion, abusive practices and mergers - and there is also a separate section dealing with auctions and procurement. Written in a clear and nontechnical style, this volume is an excellent introduction to what the increasingly important field of experimental economics can bring to the theory and practice of competition policy.

Nathan J. Kelly "The Politics of Income Inequality in the United States"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0521514584 | 216 pages | PDF | 1,52 MB

This book revolves around one central question: Do political dynamics have a systematic and predictable influence on distributional outcomes in the United States? The answer is a resounding yes. Utilizing data from mass income surveys, elite surveys, and aggregate time series, as well as theoretical insights from both American and comparative politics, Kelly shows that income inequality is a fundamental part of the U.S. macro political system. Shifts in public opinion, party control of government, and the ideological direction of policy all have important consequences for distributional outcomes. Specifically, shifts to the left produce reductions in inequality through two mechanisms - explicit redistribution and market conditioning. While many previous studies focus only on the distributional impact of redistribution, this book shows that such a narrow strategy is misguided. In fact, market mechanisms matter far more than traditional redistribution in translating macro political shifts into distributional outcomes.

Robert Piercey "The Uses of the Past from Heidegger to Rorty: Doing Philosophy Historically"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0521517532 | 234 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

In this book Robert Piercey asks how it is possible to do philosophy by studying the thinkers of the past. He develops his answer through readings of Martin Heidegger, Richard Rorty, Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre, and other historically-minded philosophers. Piercey shows that what is distinctive about these figures is a concern with philosophical pictures - extremely general conceptions of what the world is like - rather than specific theories. He offers a comprehensive and illuminating exploration of the way in which these thinkers use narrative to evaluate and criticise these pictures. The result is a powerful and original account of how philosophers use the past.

Ramaswamy R Iyer "Towards Water Wisdom: Limits, Justice, Harmony"
Publisher: Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 0761935851 | 272 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

There is a widespread view that a water crisis is looming. Towards Water Wisdom: Limits, Justice, Harmony stresses the need for an urgent and radical transformation of our thinking on water management. The first section evaluates the water scene in India, redefining the projected crisis as one of mismanagement more than scarcity. It calls for a shift from supply-side engineering to restraining the increase in demand, for conservation and more equitable management. The second and third sections deal with water-related conflict, including detailed discussions of the Indus Treaty, Baglihar, the Cauvery disputes and rehabilitation problems in the Narmada Valley. Conflicting rights are juxtaposed: the fundamental right to water, contractual rights of corporations, economic use rights of irrigators and industries, the advocacy of property rights by the World Bank, and neoliberal economists. The analysis points to the emergence of water markets. The fourth section examines the inadequacies of water laws and policies and the changes that are necessary. The fifth section presents national water concerns in other South Asian countries. At the international/global level, it deconstructs several notions and prescriptions currently in vogue, and takes note of significant new thinking. Finally, the author widens the perspective beyond water to the total system of which it is a part, and draws attention to a dynamic world scenario that makes a change in our thinking imperative

Jagdish N. Sheth, Fred C Allvine, Can Uslay, Ashutosh Dixit "Deregulation and Competition: Lessons from the Airline Industry"
Publisher: Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 0761935967 | 348 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

The US airline industry has been taken as an in-depth case study. This thought-provoking book chronicles the evolution of the airline industry and explains what lies ahead for airlines across the globe. The authors present compelling evidence on how the paradigm shift that is taking place in the airline industry is linked to the big-bang approach to deregulation. There are lessons to be learned from the US as Europe and Asia undergo the (airline) deregulation experience from a public policy as well as a corporate perspective. Deregulation and Competition: Lessons from the Airline Industry also addresses the crucial question of what will happen to the airlines that are in turmoil. In addition to the comprehensive analysis of the airline industry s evolution, the authors draw from extant theory as well as from their own research to predict and explain which (and what kind of) airlines are likely to succeed and fail in domestic and international markets. The downfall of legacy carriers and rise of discount carriers is analyzed in detail. The non-technical analysis is intended for a broader audience than airline and management professionals.

Denis Johnson "Already Dead"
Publisher: HarperCollins | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0061869181 | 448 pages | PDF | 1,07 MB

A contemporary noir, Already Dead is the tangled story of Nelson Fairchild Jr., disenfranchised scion to a northern California land fortune. A relentless failure, Nelson has botched nearly every scheme he's attempted to pull off. Now his future lies in a potentially profitable marijuana patch hidden in the lush old-growth redwoods on the family land.
Nelson has some serious problems. His marriage has fallen apart, and he may lose his land, cash and crop in the divorce. What's more, in need of some quick cash, he had foolishly agreed to smuggle $90,000 worth of cocaine through customs for Harry Lally, a major player in a drug syndicate. Chickening out just before bringing the drugs through, he flushed the powder. Now Lally wants him dead, and two goons are hot on his trail. Desperate, terrified and alone, for Nelson, there may be only one way out.
This is Denis Johnson's biggest and most complex book to date, and it perfectly showcases his signature themes of fate, redemption and the unraveling of the fabric of today's society. Already Dead, with its masterful narrative of overlapping and entwined stories, will further fuel the acclaim that surrounds one of today's most fascinating writers.

Nikolai Rogovsky, Randall S. Schuler "Socially Sensitive Enterprise Restructuring in Asia: Country Context and Examplesc"
Publisher: Asian productivity organization | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 9283370570 | 224 pages | PDF | 2,65 MB

Growing competition and globalization force business organizations to strive for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In many cases, the desired results cannot be achieved without subjecting corporate strategies and structures to transformation. In this context, restructuring is no longer an option but a necessity for survival and growth. However, it is in the interest of society that restructuring be carried out in such a way that it does not jeopardize the high value of human capital. Good management practices, social partnerships, communication, and healthy industrial relations should be applied throughout the change process. This brings to the fore the issue of socially sensitive restructuring. The need for this is crucial for enterprises in Asian economies.
