Publisher: Edward Elgar Pub | Edition: 2008 | ISBN: 1847202764 | PDF | 624 pages | 1,62 Mb

Mavroidis, Messerlin and Wauters fill this gap. The authors form an unparalleled triumvirate who successfully draw on their complementary legal-economic experiences from policymaking, practitioner expertise and academic scholarship to comprehensively examine contingent protection. In a single book, they manage to explain the economics to the lawyers, the law to the economists, and the increasing importance of contingent protection policies to everyone.'

David D. Kemp «Global Environmental Issues: A Climatological Approach»
Publisher: Routledge | Edition: 1994 | ISBN: 0415103096 | PDF | 240 pages | 4,05 Mb

The amount of material published on environmental issues continues to grow, comprised of broad generalizations aimed at non-specialists in the field. This edition of Global Environmental Issues fills the gap between technical literature and general articles for popular reading.
The book takes an interdisciplinary approach to issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, drought and acid rain--those which raise the greatest concern, and emphasizes both their societal and environmental components. While the book is grounded in a sound scientific base, it presents the work in as non-technical manner as possible. The unifying theme is the climatological aspect, and this unique approach is continued in this revised edition.
While the main theme is climatological, the contributions of socio-economic, political and cultural elements to these issues are also examined and held in account. Global Environmental Issues is a valuable edition of a unique and accessible work on a topic of worldwide concern.

Wilford Zdunkowski, Thomas Trautmann, Andreas Bott «Radiation in the Atmosphere: A Course in Theoretical Meteorology»
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 0521871077 | PDF | 496 pages | 2,76 Mb

This book presents the theory and applications of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. It is written for graduate students and researchers in the fields of meteorology and related sciences. The book begins with important basic definitions of the radiative transfer theory. It presents the hydrodynamic derivation of the radiative transfer equation and the principles of variance. The authors examine in detail various quasi-exact solutions of the radiative transfer equation and give a thorough treatment of the radiative perturbation theory. A rigorous treatment of Mie scattering is given, including Rayleigh scattering as a special case, and the important efficiency factors for extinction, scattering and absorption are derived. The fundamentals of remote sensing applications of radiative transfer are presented. Problems of varying degrees of difficulty are included at the end of each chapter, so readers can further their understanding of the materials covered in the book.

Jack Copeland «Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park's Code-breaking Computers (Popular Science)»
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | Edition: 2006 | ISBN: 019284055X | PDF | 480 pages | 5,52 Mb

The American ENIAC is customarily regarded as having been the starting point of electronic computation. This book rewrites the history of computer science, arguing that in reality Colossus--the giant computer built by the British secret service during World War II--predates ENIAC by two years. Colossus was built during the Second World War at the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park. Until very recently, much about the Colossus machine was shrouded in secrecy, largely because the code-breaking algorithms that were employed during World War II remained in use by the British security services until a short time ago. In addition, the United States has recently declassified a considerable volume of wartime documents relating to Colossus. Jack Copeland has brought together memoirs of veterans of Bletchley Park--the top-secret headquarters of Britain's secret service--and others who draw on the wealth of declassified information to illuminate the crucial role Colossus played during World War II. Included here are pieces by the former WRENS who actually worked the machine, the scientist who pioneered the use of vacuum tubes in data processing, and leading authorities on code-breaking and computer science.
A must read for anyone curious about code-breaking or World War II espionage, Colossus offers a fascinating insider's account of the world first giant computer, the great great grandfather of the massive computers used today by the CIA and the National Security Agency.
