Handel - Rinaldo (Hogwood)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 770.28 MB
CD1:76’52; CD2:51’38; CD3:45’09 | October 10, 2000 | Decca

This is a magnificent recording with an absolute dream cast. Despite its historical context within the late 11th century battles between the Crusades and the Saracens, Handel's "Rinaldo", written in the early 18th century, is actually a fanciful tale of love, devotion and betrayal populated by kings and warriors, fair maidens and sorcerers. It has all the elements of a great period action movie produced by Jerry Bruckheimer…

Handel - Agrippina (Gardiner)

CD1:74’52; CD2:73’43; CD3:69’08 | April 10, 2007 | Decca

On 26 December 1709 'Agrippina', Handel's first dramatic masterpiece, was produced in Venice, the homeland of opera. It was a triumph. The theater echoed shouts of 'Viva il caro Sassone' and the opera received no less than twenty-seven performances...

Handel - Ariodante (Minkowski)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 784.73 MB
CD1: 61.15, CD2: 63.22, CD3: 53.49 | August 10, 1999 | Archiv Produktion

Ariodante is one of Handel's most consistently fine operas. Yes, yes, there are whole strings of da capo arias, but they are so dramatically apt and melodically interesting that things never get tiresome. Harmonia Mundi recently released a fine recording of this opera (conducted by Nicholas McGegan and starring "La Divina" Lorraine Hunt), yet this is even better. Anne Sofie Von Otter has, in recent years, sometimes oversung in Baroque music, but her tone here is ideal--heroic and powerful yet pure... There's not a weak link in the cast, and Mark Minkowski's conducting is consistently exciting. There is no better recording of a Handel opera out there. --Matthew Westphal

Handel - Serse (William Christie)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 766.86 MB
CD1:66’11; CD2:59’08; CD3:39’47 | November 2, 2004 | Virgin vertias (EMI Classics)

Handel's Serse is mostly known today for (what is known as) its famous "Largo," (the aria "Ombra mai fu") which opens the opera and is a love song to a tree sung by our whimsical, bratty king Serse. The opera concerns Serse's falling in love with his brother Arsamene's fiancée Romilda immediately after hearing her sing--as well as the fact that Romilda's sister Atalanta loves Arsamene, and that Princess Amastre, who has been jilted by Serse, wanders through the opera dressed as a man wanting revenge against Serse... --Robert Levine

Pergolesi - Adriano in Siria (Marcello Panni)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 814.21 MB
CD1:69’21; CD2:57’47; CD3:34’09 | September 4, 1992 | Bongiovanni

Given that this CD was recorded in the 80s, I guess you can't really fault it for featuring the style of opera singing that was popular then, and it was worth buying anyway since it is the only recording of this beautiful opera available. If you're into obscure baroque operas, this would be a good one to add to your collection. And although the singers cast in the primo roles aren't the ones I would have chosen, Daniela Dessi as Sabina and Lucia Mazzaria as Aquilio perform very well in those roles. Susanna Anselmi is also good as Adriano.

Jommelli Niccolo - Il Vologeso (Frieder Bernius)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 741.36 MB
CD1:65’47; CD2:60’45; CD3:48’45 | November 1, 1998 | Orfeo

Niccolo Jommelli is one of those composers who was famous during his lifetime but then was forgotten. Today we are so consumed by the music of Mozart and Haydn, the two great composers of the latter half of the 18th century that we forget or overlook the superb music of the many other fine composers. We tend to include in our repetoire the music of Gluck and CPE Bach, but we tend to pass up the music of Jommelli ( who was born that same year 1714) as well as Traetta, Piccinni, Michael Hayden, Cimarosa, Paisiello and Johann Christian Bach, thereby depriving ourselves of some outstanding music. I think it would be a mistake to judge Jommelli by a couple of intermezzi he wrote. They are light and frothy and in my opinion don't amount to much.

Jommelli Niccolo - Didone Abbandonata (Frieder Bernius, Dorothea Roschmann)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 711.53 MB
CD1:64’38; CD2:56’13; CD3:48’24 | December 19, 1995 | Orfeo

I am sooo glad I went ahead and bought this recording in my quest for all of Dorothea Röschman's recordings. I know Jomelli from the only two recordings out there (I believe): Gérard Lesne and Véronique Gens singing Le Lamentazaione del profeta Geremia, which I saw performed in France (snappy!), and Armida Abbandonata (jeez! talk about a fixation on abandoned women!) with Christophe Rousset conducting. Now, let's not confuse Jomelli's opera with "deep" music, yet the sheer amount of glorious coloratura baroque singing is thrilling here as it is elsewhere...

CD1: 71’42 | 26 february 2009 | EARLY MUSIC

Monsigny Pierre-Alexandre - Le Deserteur (Ryan Brown)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 397.02 MB
CD1:59.49; CD2:37:00 | September 28, 2010 | Naxos

Monsigny and Sedaine's brilliant opera-cotnique Le Deserteur, was an immediate and lasting success for its melodic charms and musical variety, its blend of comedy with moments of great sentiment and pathos, and its intellectual radicalism prefiguring the humanitarian ideas of the 19th century Romantics. This recording features the musical items only from this forerunner of the 'rescue' opera, in which the heroine Louise extricates her fiance Alexis from prison and a death sentence. A written explanation of the action between the airs is provided in the booklet

Marais Marin - Semele (Herve Niquet)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Logs, Scans | 695.69 MB
CD1:75'59; CD2:61'27 | April 29, 2008 | Glossa

For his latest recording directing Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet has revived Sémélé by Marin Marais – the final opera by one of the leading composers from the reign of Louis XIV. Known above all for his compositions for the viola da gamba, Marais the composer was at the same time the author of a number of tragédies lyriques which he wrote for the Académie royale de Musique. Even to this day it has only been Alcyone which has attracted the attention of music lovers and musicians. Yet Sémélé – first performed in 1709 – arrives now full of music to charm and seduce the listener: a sparkling prologue honouring Bacchus, a set of arias with a freshly-minted appeal, a marvellously inventive diabolical scene, divertissements rich in character; all this leading up to an earthquake scene memorably anticipating the later work of Rameau. For all lovers of glorious baroque music, here is now the opportunity to discover and enjoy a masterpiece which has lain in theshadows for the last three centuries.

Mozart - Requiem K.626, Kyrie K.341 (Philippe Herreweghe)
Classical | EAC | Flac, Img+Cue, Log, Scans | 280.69 MB
CD1: 53’57 | 1 May 1997 | Harmonia Mundi

Mozart's Requeim is another masterpiece where he unleashes his overwhelming genius, which even his jealous contemporaries could not not find words for other than "divine". At the same time, it is also a subject of great controversy as to how the unfinished portions should have been completed (serious listeners should try to learn more about how Sussmayr completed the work and how his work is criticized). Whatever the case, this is unquestionably one of the greatest works of art ever created by man...

In his book Capitalism and Freedom, neo-liberal/conservative economist Milton Friedman wrote that all the great accomplishments in history "were the product of individual genius." He continued to say that " the specially talented are always few." Presumably, Friedman included himself among those few, but he of all people might have had the modesty to acknowledge his co-workers, particularly since most of his books are co-authored. But Friedman suffered from "Ayn Rand Syndrome," one of the leading causes of incurable egomania in the modern world. Friedman was dead wrong, and in this case Tolstoy was right. The 'great men' of history have not be so much self-made as made despite themselves...
