October (Oktyabr, Октябрь)
DVD-9 | PAL 720 x 576 (4:3) MPEG2 | Audio: Dolby AC3, 6 Channels, 448 Kbps | 1h:55min | 6,62 Gb | Video menu: Ru, En, Fr
IMDB: 7.8/10 | Language: Silent film | Subtitles: Russian, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portugese
Genre: History, Drama | Studio: Sowkino (USSR) | 1927 Year | Director: Sergei Eisenstein; Writers: Grigori Aleksandrov, John Reed (book)
Cast: Vladimir Popov, Vasili Nikandrov, Boris Livanov, Eduard Tisse, Vassily Worker

“Rating and reviewing movies like these are often difficult for the average critic. On one hand, they're done absolutely brilliantly done in ways that take one's breath away; on the other hand, how much credit can you give to a movie that is pure propaganda, especially propaganda for something the reviewer doesn't agree with?

This “realistic re-enactment” of the events of October 25th, 1917, is actually anything but realism. Instead, it is a harrowing and amazing Romantic experience. This is not to say it's bad – it's brilliant! The direction and editing on this film are much more refined than Eisenstein's previous and much-more-heralded film, Brenonsets Potyemkin (Battleship Potemkin), and it has a whole lot more symbolism and focus on literary devices. His fast-paced cutting is not as disjunctive as previously; instead, it works to shock the viewer with the juxtapositions. I don't think I shall ever get the quick back-and-forth cutting between that one soldier's face and the firing machine gun ever out of my mind. It's just that powerful.

This movie is so good, in fact, that it makes me proud to be a Bolshevik... and I'm not, not in any way or form! How's that for being a powerful, well-done movie? The Birth of a Nation didn't effectively make me proud to be a Klansman, for a comparison...

Because of its intense political alignment, I can't see everyone appreciating this film. There will always be those out there who say, “Ah, it's only Communist propaganda” (which is right) “so it's not even worth watching...” (which is wrong). For those who are looking for a magnificent cinematic experience, however, this movie is a fine choice indeed.”Amazon.com

IMDB: 7.8/10 | Genre: Drama, Comedy | 1977 Year | Studio: Mosfilm (USSR) | Director: Nikita Mikhalkov; Writers: Alexander Adabashian, Anton Chekhov (play)
Cast: Aleksandr Kalyagin, Yelena Solovey, Yevgeniya Glushenko, Yuri Bogatyryov, Oleg Tabakov, Pavel Kadochnikov, Nikita Mikhalkov, Anatoli Romashin

“From the opening moments of gay laughter and silliness to the closing shots of a lost Russian social class fading into time, Nikita Mikhalkov's film “An Unfinished Piece for Player Piano” is perfect Chekhov. Drawn from “Mr. Platonov”, the story circles around a group of relatives and friends at a country estate. Everyone is giddy with boredom until a woman arrives who was Platonov's youthful love in past years. This arrival stirs up old memories and questions Platonov has never resolved about the former relationship and his life direction. Others are affected by his changed mood, and they too begin to question certain relationships among them. In Chekhov there is never tragedy in the sense of anger, betrayal, and death, but rather in nuances of missed opportunities, regrets, and critical life insights always achieved in hindsight. Most of his plays leave you with a feeling of sadness and yearning for character types that no longer exist. The turn-of-the-century people he presents are part of a fading aristocracy that will be eliminated by the revolution of 1917. In this production, the ending is sweet. I have read and seen Chekhov's plays, but until you see a fine Russian production such as this one, you can never quite experience the tone and color of the story as Chekhov himself intended. The acting is superb (and includes Director Mikhalkov himself). A must see.”Amazon.com

NOTE: This is really funny movies (the first, “Peculiarities of the National Hunt” – a cult in Russia);
but much depends on the translation.
Hopefully, it's ridiculous to not only Russian (unfortunately, another translation does not exist).

P.S. No animal in the film was not damaged!  %)

Language: Russian | Subtitles: Russian, English | Video menu: Russian, English | 4,5 Gb
IMDB: 7.6/10 | Genre: Comedy | 1995 Year | Studio: Lenfilm (Russia) | Director and Writer: Aleksandr Rogozhkin
Cast: Viktor Bychkov, Ville Haapasalo, Aleksey Buldakov, Semyon Strugachyov, Sergei Ruskin, Sergei Guslinsky

“As soon as the comedy was released it became a nation-wide success in Russia. It is brilliant in every way: the plot, the actors, the spirit of merrymaking – all this makes the comedy a national favourite. The comedy allows Russians to have a good laugh at themselves as it highlights popular Russian beliefs, makes fun of the fabulous Russian vodka-drinking and spinning yarn stories of hunters. The whole cast of actors has immediately become tremendously popular. It is a kind comedy, without excessive use of four-letter words though not entirely without them. As far as the plot is concerned the story goes on like this: a group of friends (an army general, police investigator, a writer, a young intellectual, a Finn and a forester) are about to go hunting. The Finn is eager to see a real Russian hunt with borzois, horsemen, aristocratic finery. In reality his companions drink a lot while getting ready for the hunt, get into uproariously funny straits, send a cow flying in a super modern bomber, hunt the said cow and so on. If you have a chance to see it, don't miss it. The comedy is worth seeing even if you are not a Russian. Hunters will be hunters everywhere and they will always spin yarns.”IMDB.com

Language: Russian | Subtitles: Russian, English | Video menu: Russian, English | 4,1 Gb

Cast: Aleksey Buldakov, Viktor Bychkov, Semyon Strugachyov, Sergei Ruskin, Sergei Guslinsky, Vasili Domrachyov

“The cast of the first film are re-united in this comedy caper, and they actually do catch at least one fish between the drinking and the hangovers. Some of the jokes might go over your head and you even need some history to understand one of them.

I keep reading that this series of films will not be understood by Americans and that good comedy is funny in any language. That simply is not true and I believe that many “Friends” or “Frasier” fans from ANY part of the world will not get even a fraction of the humour when they watch this in their native language. My tip – if you watch a dubbed or subtitled version of this and do not find it too funny, become Reivo, buy a ticket to Russia or the Ukraine, make some friends and live the film and when you come back to your own world look around and tell me which you can identify with more. You might like it and the experience will put a whole new slant on things you have found un-funny. You probably did not think much of Fawlty Towers either. The only thing from America that comes close would be MASH.”IMDB.com

“I found out about Kin-Dza-Dza from a friend who noticed it was (at the time) #16 on the IMDB Top 50 Sci-Fi movies list. I did some research on the film and quickly discovered that virtually nobody in the western world had seen it. There were no English subtitled DVD releases, and no plans to release it anytime soon. Of course this made the movie ever more appealing and I suddely HAD to see it. I turned to my only remaining option...downloading it over the Internet.

I found the movie (with fan-made English subs!) on Bittorrent, and within a week the movie had downloaded. The subtitles are great, and the movie is a treasure! If you're a fan of sci-fi or existentialism, this movie is both entertaining and philosophical. The movie is a cult sensation in Russia, akin to movies such as Donnie Darko in the US. It's really a shame that no one has made the movie available over here, because it would definitely find an audience with the proper word of mouth. Movies like this tend to publicize themselves, you just have to get people to look at them in the first place.

I think the Criterion Collection would be the perfect company to introduce this great film to the rest of the world. It's very culturally important in Russia (one of the scenes is an obvious critique of Communism that managed to make it past the censors!), and somewhat similar to Solyaris, another Russian Sci-Fi that has been put out by the collection. The Criterion Collection carries with it enough prestige to get people to take notice and give the film a shot. Plus, it'd be great to finally get some information of the movie and it's Russian influence! All the pages with ANY information are in Russian, so I don't really know anything about the history of the film. Anyway, this film is funny, smart and endearing. If you are able to get ahold of a copy of the movie, I definitely recommend it!”Amazon.com

IMDB: 7.6/10 | Genre: Drama, Comedy | 1979 Year | Studio: Mosfilm (USSR) | Director: Nikita Mikhalkov; Writers: Nikita Mikhalkov, Alexander Adabashian
Cast: Oleg Tabakov, Yuri Bogatyryov, Andrei Popov, Yelena Solovey, Avangard Leontyev, Andrei Razumovsky, Yevgeni Steblov, Anatoli Romashin (voice)

“"...for Ilia Ilyich, lying down was neither a necessity, as it is for a sick man, nor an occasional need, as it is for one who is tired. It was his normal state".
Based on the classic novel by Ivan Goncharov, this is a strange but fascinating film about lethargy as a form of escape, as the melancholy Ilia Ilyich Oblomov (in a wonderful performance by Oleg Tabakov) avoids his problems by sleeping, while his world crumbles around him. His avoidance of making decisions gets complicateed when a childhood friend introduces him to Olga (Elena Solovei).

Written (along with Alexander Adabashian), and directed by Nikita Mikhalkov (“Burnt by the Sun”, “Anna”, “Urga”, etc.), it has gorgeous cinematography by Pavel Lebeshev, who makes some scenes have the look of old paintings.
If you like your films with a lot of action, this one is not for you, and perhaps its delicacy makes it a “woman's film”, though it is a thoughtful, and sometimes very funny film...

This is one that is worthy of several viewings, as it explores Oblomov's fear, his love, the simplicity/complexity of his life. There is a lovabale innocence about him that is endearing, and the end always touches me deeply, with its exquisite Rachmaninov choral piece... a fitting ending to this lovely work of art.”Amazon.com

This is mega-trash for Russians (because you will not find any Russian (actually, Soviet) family, which wasn't wounded in this massacre). My grandfather was killed on this war – in the homeguard under Moscow – that is why WWII for me and millions of fellow citizens is not the reason to shoot the mystical fantasy anime. This is Memory, Sorrow, and Curse of all wars (I think the same is related to Germans, as well as Americans, Japanese and many other nationalities). Though, I recommend this movie for all. This is ... a fresh look. “And let all flowers be in blossom”

“First Squad is set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast are a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.”Anime-Movie-Site.com

“Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is, in my opinion, one of, if not the, greatest musical works in history. It is fifteen hours of gorgeous, dramatic music, coupled to an endlessly fascinating and moving story. Needless to say, every recording of this gigantic work is going to be flawed in some way, so choosing a Ring recording is a question of personal tastes and preferences. While Solti's 1958-65 Vienna cycle is by far the most famous and popular, it is not the one I like the best. Herbert von Karajan's cycle, recorded from 1966 to 1970, is the best cycle I have ever heard.”

Dmitry Shostakovich – Orchestral Works
2 CD-Set | Genre: Neo-Classical | Lossles: APE+CUE | Covers (300 dpi) | 347+346 Mb
SPARS Code: ADD | Labels: Melodiya (Russia), BMG Classics | 1998 Year | 2h:23min

“Dmitri Shostakovich listen (Russian: Дми́трий Дми́триевич Шостако́вич, Dmitrij Dmitrievič Šostakovič) (September 25 [O.S. September 12] 1906–August 9, 1975) was a Russian composer of the Soviet period. Shostakovich had a complex relationship with the Soviet government, suffering two official denunciations of his music, in 1936 and 1948, and the periodic banning of his work. At the same time, he received a number of accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet. Despite the official controversy, he remained the most popular Soviet composer of his generation.
After a period influenced by Prokofiev and Stravinsky (Symphony No. 1), Shostakovich switched to modernism (Symphony No. 2 and “The Nose”) before developing a hybrid of styles with “Lady Macbeth” and the ill-fated Fourth Symphony. This hybrid style ranged from the neo-classical (with Stravinskian influences) to the post-romantic music (with Mahlerian influences). His tonality involved much use of modality and some astringent neo-classical harmonies à la Hindemith and Prokofiev. His music frequently includes sharp contrasts and elements of the grotesque.
Shostakovich prided himself on his orchestration, which is clear and well-projected. This aspect of Shostakovich's technique owes more to Gustav Mahler than Rimsky-Korsakov. His greatest works are generally considered to be his symphonies and string quartets, fifteen of each. Other works include operas, six concertos, and a substantial quantity of film music. David Fanning concludes in Grove that: Amid the conflicting pressures of official requirements, the mass suffering of his fellow countrymen, and his personal ideals of humanitarian and public service, he succeeded in forging a musical language of colossal emotional power.”Wikipedia.org

“A terrific little fantasy that, not surprisingly, has flavors of Monty Python. My children and I first saw it in the early '80s on a night ferry from Harwich to Zeebrugge. I've seen it a few times since, and marvel at the creativity that went into the film. God's “employees” trying to use a map of the universe to track down treasure is the theme; running around through time trying to find the treasure is the game. The cameos by Cleese, Connery and the rest are some amusing highlights, but the Time Bandits themselves really make the story. The climactic scenes with the Evil Genius made me think more than a little of the Sorcerer's Apprentice.

I think it is a well done bit of fantasy for older children and adults; it helps to know a bit of history going into it. I wouldn't let my six-year old granddaughter see it – at least not yet – but she and her sister probably will love the adventure in a few years.”IMDb.com

“Jacob's Ladder is a masterpiece. Nothing less. It has a highly intelligent plot though not difficult or artsy and is void of cliches. It therefore confuses and aggravates many viewers and professional reviewers always wanting a standard has-it-all Hollywood outpouring.

It is so few films that leaves room for independent thoughts. Jacob's Ladder tumbles your mind the same way a dream of your own does. I have never felt this effect in a film so strong before. The images comes pouring in and your brain tries to make sense of it. Whenever you think you have a grasp it slides away again.

The brilliance of the progression of the story, twists and turns, and the final explanation, so obvious but elusive as real dreams are, makes it on par with the best of Kubrick.”IMDb.com
