Trainees have just gotten into their beds, and they are already called for assembly. While drill instructor is deducting points by a fistful, Sanduo is having hard time grasping that this drill is not about being friendly.

Xu Sanduo is spending his last night in former 7th Company building remembering all the good moments that he had while serving here. Next morning, new soldiers from another unit are going to occupy the building, and Sanduo is called to give a speech about glorious 7th "Steel" Company, and he does that in his recognizable style.

After separating from other remaining candidates, Sanduo, Chengcai i Liuyi have to pass the last obstacle in their test, a fortified platoon from Group A. Sanduo and Liuyi are flanking them by crossing the river, while Chengcai is covering them with his sniper rifle.

It's the second day of the test, and the last remaining soldiers, Sanduo, Liuyi and Chengcai among them, are so hungry they resort to eating raw mice meat. Some are eager to join Team A, but some are having second thoughts. Group gets ambushed, and one is to hungry to go on and gets disqualified.

Sanduo receives his promotion, and still has no assignment. He tags along with former buddies, now in other companies. Their former Company commander, now a major, comes along to see Sanduo and Wu Liuyi. Liuyi performs rather badly cos of his injured back, overstressing himself in order to earn awards for his unit, and in memory of his old unit.

Xu Sanduo is alone in old barracks, and bored to death. He spends his time cleaning, running, rolling over bar, and having pretend meetings. He cannot make up his mind, but this time he has to choose between promotion and keeping the same dull duty, or leaving the Army and going back home.

Chengcai comes up with news that he is leaving 7th Company, thus becoming the first soldier in Company's history to do so on his free will. Sanduo is the only one to see him off, while the rain is pouring on them. Sanduo is called up to Divisional HQ to demonstrate night fighting.

Maneuvers are taken very seriously. 7th Company is going against sneaky Blue force, whose night attack marks half of the Reds as dead. When Chengcai is taken out next day, Sanduo goes after the sniper that "killed" his fellow villager.
