Every album by Ron Boots is eagerly awaited for. What will this Dutch master bring us next? Well, “Area Movement”, which was conceived during the last 15 years (with many long intervals), describes some special places in the world. This ranges from Ron’s own country The Netherlands (The “Wadden Sea”) to Canada and the Serengeti National Park.
The style on “Area Movement” is quite melodically, sometimes even symphonic. In this case, “Area Movement” sometimes bares some of the same fine atmospheres of his early albums. The first track “The Grand Banks” already shows it. Starting with a soft piano part, this piece really “rocks”. It features Harold van der Heijden on drums. Also, the sequences are excellent again. Another great track is "Rapids" in which the sequences somewhat remind of Ron’s masterpiece “Tainted Bare Skin”.
Ron loves many musical styles. The cover of the legendary song “Dust In The Wind” by the impressive progrock band Kansas shows his interests. In this song Ron sings and does that well. Maybe it’s an idea for a whole album?
Ron Boots doesn’t stop to surprise us with his music and his ideas. “Area Movement” is another example of his visionary.

A majority of the material on the album really creates a soundtrack for the listener. Each volume of La Roca has the ultra-climactic sound of today’s Trance music and Sotomayor does feature the 4/4 beat on one of his tracks, but he is far too skilled as a musician to stick to such a predictable formula. Sotomayor constructs down-tempo and Latin percussion with a keen ear for blending digital and acoustic instruments that aim for an introspective and meditative listen. Angelic sounds sweep through each mix. One particular track "Without You" sticks out from Sotomayor’s style. In this instance the sounds become more stripped down and takes a Massive Attack-styled turn with pulsating bass, melancholic piano and reverb that lurks around in the distance. With the exception of that darker moment, most of the album is uplifting and dangerously near adult contemporary, but thankfully it never reaches that point. Nacho Sotomayor may not be the most talked about artist in electronic music but who cares, this is strong material that is at least worth the listen, or even better, as the soundtrack for your next adventure.

'Ipanema' does not only feature known Fous de la Mer classics in a new but nevertheless strangely familiar Bossa Nova sound, the easy-going Mediterranean pop understanding of Fous de La Mer is continued ... an atmospheric trip along the Côte d'Azur on its winding roads to Cannes or Saint Tropez!

“Ascendent” is a lush journey with a myriad of geographical influences from the far reaches of the earth paired with ambient / electronic music that is both spellbinding and captivating. Electronic music allows DaKsha to develop their unique and innovative sound – creating mind altering soundscapes as each song globe-trots around various ethno-electronic lounge sounds. “The Jade Stem” is a deep, meditative song featuring weeping strings & synths over a diligent percussive beat. “Nuevo Tango” is a light-hearted jaunt featuring the Bandoneon (small accordion), while “Nights of Serampur” is a heady excursion down the great Hoogli River (India) where the music permeates a tribalistic and mysterious vibe accompanied by haunting vocals. Title track “Ascendent” breaks down from the synthetic, yet emmotive background music to raw, stripped down percussion and didgerdoo. “Angel Wings” draws the sonic journey to a close with a light, airy release that would leave any listener yearning for more.

Marshall Styler - The Twilight Concertos
MP3 @ 192 Kbps | 57:02 min | 85.7 MB | 2004 | 10% Recovery Record
Unabashedly romantic and filled with warm flowing melodies (which is understandable since the album celebrates the artist’s wife being cancer-free for five years — bravo for that, by the way!), Marshall Styler’s The Twilight Concertos is a delightful recording featuring piano mixed with both an assortment of orchestral synths and some classic new age music electronic sounds as well. Realize that all ten songs adhere to this formula (which is not to say that there isn’t some variety here), and you will almost certainly enjoy the CD. Styler’s exhibits solid command of his keyboard arsenal and his engineering/production quality is also good. In some ways, the songs are throwbacks to the simpler heart-on-your-sleeve period of new age music, and some of the particular keyboard embellishments add to that nostalgic feeling.

Davol's debut release, Mystic Waters, was one of the best-selling New Age records of 1989, reaching the Top 15 on the Billboard New Age Chart and the Top 30 on nationwide NAC radio. Paradox expanded his rhythmic foundation and sonic textures to firmly establish himself as one of New Age music's leading composers. Nature of the Beast, the third release of composer/arranger Davol combined his melodic genius with an imaginative palette of sounds to create a work of remarkably original flare.

This upbeat collection reveals a new side of Davol. Delving into new artistic areas, he occasionally combines spoken word in foreign tongues with his electronic tapestries. For example, the piece 'Just Like You' demonstrates an interesting melange of electronic pop with spoken word in Chinese and English provided by the sultry voice of his friend Meiji. The reliable and uplifting pop-influenced electronic grooves we've come to expect from Davol are aplenty, in such pieces as 'Say It', 'Human' (dedicated to a friend he recently lost to cancer), and 'Lucky Day'. 'Ride' takes us on a percolating electronic journey that will not disappoint. And not forgetting his roots, 'Necessity of Love' is a new age staple, cinematic at times, in a style reminiscent of Vangelis. It may take many years of patience between albums, but it's good to see Davol return and provide us with A Day Like No Other.

The music in this CD is strikingly beautiful. I'm not normally a fanatic about new age, but there is something about this collection that stands out. It has more depth, complexity, and strength of character than most other new age. I have actually bought several of these and given them away as gifts. And luckily I've kept a spare because it is apparently now out of print. No collection should be without this. And we can only hope that David Friedman will create another release someday soon.
