Mona Bone Jakon is the third album released by singer-songwriter Cat Stevens. The album was released In July, 1970 on the Island Records label in the United Kingdom, and A&M record label in the United States and Canada. After a meteoric start to his career, surprising even his original producer at Deram Records with the hit singles “I Love My Dog”, “Matthew and Son” and “I’m Gonna Get Me a Gun”, Stevens’ debut album, Matthew and Son began charting as well. However, after the pressure for a repeat album of the same calibre, Stevens, considered a young teen sensation, was overwhelmed by a new lifestyle, as well as the demands of writing, recording, performing, publicity appearances, and touring. In the fall of 1968, he collapsed, with the diagnosis of tuberculosis and a collapsed lung. For over a year, whilst recovering, Stevens virtually disappeared from the British pop scene. Mona Bone Jakon is notable not only for his return, but for the emergence of a very different artist.

Gaucho is the seventh studio album by the American Jazz rock band Steely Dan, released in 1980. The sessions for Gaucho represented the peak of Steely Dan's recording studio perfectionism and obsessive recording techniques. To record the album, the band used at least 42 different musicians, spent over a year in the studio, and far exceeded the original monetary advance given to the band by their record label. During the two year span in which the album was recorded, the band was plagued by a number of creative, personal and professional problems. Gaucho marked a significant stylistic change for Steely Dan, introducing a more minimal, groove and atmosphere based format. Gaucho proved to be Steely Dan's final studio album before a 12 year hiatus.

City to City is an album by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty. The album was strongly received and went to #1 in the US, going Platinum. It took Quentin Tarantino's using "Stuck in the Middle with You," the 1973 hit of Gerry Rafferty's former band Stealers Wheel, in Reservoir Dogs to make Rafferty hip again. But City to City, his 1978 solo breakthrough, has long been worth rediscovering--and not just because it contains "Baker Street," one of the biggest and best singles of the 1970s. It's as rewardingly refreshing a change of pace now as it was when it emerged in the midst of the disco era.

Jayhawks - Tomorrow the Green Grass

1.07 GB (24/96) + 320 MB redbook | HF + FS | Alt-Country | 1995
American Recordings 2011 Reissue
180G RTI HQ 180 Audiophile Vinyl

Tomorrow the Green Grass is a 1995 album by The Jayhawks. The Jayhawks showed that after two accomplished Indie albums and their stunning 1992 breakthrough effort "Hollywood Town Hall" - here was a truly great Americana band hitting their stride. Members of the Jayhawks have described their music as "loud folk music" and thats a pretty good description. Tomorrow The Green Grass is "middle period" Jayhawks and it is possibly their finest recording - although every single one of their albums are excellent. This is American folk rock at its best and you can hear why there are so many comparisons to Gram Parsons and Neil Young. This one is a requirement for any music fan who's serious about their music collection.

THIS ALBUM IS FABULOUS. NO FLAWS. EVERY SONG A MASTERPIECE. A SPIRITUAL GENIUS AT WORK.

1992's Hollywood Town Hall is an alt-rock classic. Every song on this album is a gem. Technically the Jayhawks' third album (after their eponymous debut, also known as the Bunkhouse Album [1986] and Blue Earth [1989]), Hollywood Town Hall is the culmination of the band's early sound. Olson and Louris weren't fighting yet-- they were still having fun making their guitars jangle and their fuzz boxes buzz. (Think Roger McGuinn meets the Jesus and Mary Chain... on ecstacy...) And their vocal harmonies are just plain gorgeous. The lyrics are poetic and obscure, always a tad wistful, but the music is clear and bright-- in short, this is why the early-mid-90's alt-country movement has sometimes been called "no depression." They keep the earthy, folky roots of the music intact, but add gritty rock and honeyed pop overtones for a sound that's both familiar and new. (Well, that just sounds pretentious... but it's true!) Anyway, HTH's sound and mood are so consistent and seamless that it's hard to choose standout tracks, but my favorites are "Waiting for the Sun," "Crowded in the Wings," "Take Me With You (When You Go)," "Settled Down Like Rain," "Nevada, California," and "Martin's Song."
