Charlie Byrd Quintet - Du Hot Club De Concord (1995)
Brazilian Jazz / Swing
MP3 | VBR ~218 kbps | 15 tracks | 99,97 Mb

This project is an inspired idea. Guitarist Charlie Byrd, who will always be best-known for his bossa nova recordings, also always loved Django Reinhardt's music. He heads du Hot Club de Concord, a group similar to the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, except that instead of being comprised of three guitars, one violin, and a bass, this ensemble has two guitars (with Frank Vignola playing rhythm behind Byrd), violinist Johnny Frigo, bassist Michael Moore, and Hendrik Meurkens on harmonica. The blend between harmonica and violin is particularly effective, and the repertoire ranges from swing tunes (including Byrd's "Swing '59") to some light Brazilian music, ballads, and standards. Byrd, Frigo, and Meurkens take plenty of fine solos, making this a highly recommended set. – Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Egberto Gismonti & Academia de Dancas - Sanfona (1981)
Latin Jazz
MP3 | 256 kbps | 2CD | 10 tracks | 96:01 | 94.63 + 85.11 MB

This is a fantastic recording of Egberto's music. Ranging from abstract "free" jazz to hothouse Brazilian samba inspired rhythms to meditative guitar ruminations this CD is astounding for the level of playing and interplay from all the musicians, the quality of the compositions and freshness of concept. The quartet side in particular stands out. The four musicians play with white-hot intensity on Gismonti's challenging pieces with nary a cliche in sight. It's hard to know what aspect of EG to be most impressed with: his astounding guitar playing, his virtuostic and fresh approach to the piano or his unique and powerful compositions. This is one of my all time favorite Jazz (if you can call it that!) recordings and I urge you to get it.

Laurindo Almeida, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Charlie Byrd: Music of the Brazilian Masters
MP3 | 192 kbps | 16 tracks | 1:03:42 | 91.70 MB

The great Brazilian guitarists Laurindo Almeida, Charlie Byrd and Carlos Barbosa-Lima team up for a tightly arranged set that (even with a Jobim tune and an original apiece by Byrd and Almeida) is mostly comprised of Brazilian classical music. The guitarist's distinctive but complementary tones add a great deal of beauty to the quiet but often-complex music. Fans of the acoustic guitar will find this CD well worth acquiring. – Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Baden Powell - Live in Hamburg (1995)
Latin
MP3 | 256 kbps | 10 tracks | 81,53 Mb

Latin guitar master Baden Powell is heard in a 1983 solo concert recorded at the University of Hamburg. During this 43-minute performance, the hushed audience absorbs the music like a sponge, bursting into wild applause at the conclusion of each number. "Variacao" is his intricate reworking of the theme from Antonio Carlos Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema," while he adds a soft vocal to Jobim's "A Felicidade." But Powell was a prolific composer himself, so half of the set is devoted to his equally strong works. His dexterity is phenomenal in his blazing "Valinsha," while his concluding number is the demanding (and very dramatic) "Cai Dentro." Fans of Latin guitar will definitely want to pick up this brilliant live CD, issued by the German label Acoustic Music. – Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

José Mercé - Arie (2000)
Flamenco / Vocals
MP3 320 kbps | 10 tracks | 94.26 MB

"José Mercé leaves flamenco total freedom, and surprises once again with the revolutionary way in which he interprets both the most classic and the most innovative cantes (styles). In this album he tackles Al Alba, the theme by Luís Eduardo Aute, and an impressive blues, as well as orthodox palos (forms) such as the martinete, bulería and alegrías. On guitar, Moraíto Chico, and the versatile Tino Di Geraldo is in charge of percussion."

Monty Alexander - Caribbean Circle (1992)
Jazz
MP3 | 320 kbps | 12 tracks | 58:01 | 76.29 + 59.85 MB

"First-rate example of connecting diverse styles and traditions. Alexander, a solid soloist well versed in Caribbean music, integrates rhythms from the islands into his solos, yet retains the jazz edge and drive. A great supporting cast as well which includes Slide Hampton and Jon Faddis."

Moraito - Morao Y Oro (1992)
Flamenco
MP3 | 256 kbps | 9 tracks | 40:59 | 75.28 MB

"This very well recorded CD shows Moraito using the idiom of Flamenco and the guitar to produce "pure music": intense and concentrated, fresh as an improvisation, full as an orchestral score. This is a must for any musician. Not for background music."– M L, Amazon.com

"I decided to check out Moraito due to Richard Brune's ravings (the famous guitar builder and guitarist). I am speechless, this is really pure flamenco but also very virtuosic and filled with a modern approach. I would recommend this to people who are into Sabicas, Paco, and stuff like Tomatito, but wouldn't recommend it to people who just want to buy some Rumba dance stuff (not that there is anything worng with that...) Beautiful album and a shame that outside of Spain he is rather obscure..."– Les Kismartoni, Amazon.com

Egberto Gismonti - Circense (1980)
Jazz / Folk
MP3 | 192 Kbps | 8 tracks | 49:35 | 77,84 Mb

“This excellent release by Egberto Gismonti was conceived under the concept of a circus, an institution that has the ambivalent quality of being at the same time universal and regional; the "circense" tradition exists in almost all parts of the globe, but it is enriched by the smaller companies that keep struggling to survive in poorer setups, adding regional elements to the whole. It fits like a glove for the music of Gismonti, which also aims to enrich Brazilian musical tradition with elements of worldwide classical and popular acquisitions...”

The Yellowjackets - Altered State (2005)
Smooth Jazz / Crossover Jazz
MP3 | 320kbps | 11 tracks | 59:55 | 139.36 MB

"Once again, the Yellowjackets come through with some first rate material. They seem to have a unique blend of "straight-ahead" jazz sensibilities combined with a little fusion and contemporary styles. The musicianship of all of the members of the band is incredible, and the compositional skills of Ferrante, Mintzer and Haslip are excellent as well. The music comes away sounding very "comfortable" and well-tuned."

Tomatito - Aguadulce

Tomatito - Aguadulce (2004)
Flamenco
MP3 | 320 kbps | 8 tracks | 84.53 MB

"Tomatito is my favorite flamenco guitarist living today. This album is a wonderful effort from Tomatito and every bit as entertaining as his other solo efforts. The album does have some mainstream, flamenco-inspired tunes, but never strays from the genre. The recording and mastering is excellent and well produced. Whether you are a fan of traditional flamenco guitar or just a novice listener of duende, this album is a great addition to anyone's collection. I recommend any and all of Tomatito's recordings and Aqua Dulce is a brilliant example of the guitar masterery of Tomatito."
