"Gr 10-Up Encyclopedic, in-depth treatment of plant-related topics from acid rain to wood products. While this set includes complex information (for example, how ATP synthase catalyzes ATP), it also offers basic facts on biomes, leaves, cells, individual scientists, related careers, and other subjects. The writing is clear and well organized, and depending on the topic, it's concise or very detailed. Highlighted words are defined in the wide margins and each entry provides see-also references and a brief bibliography. Most pages generally include a table, chart, photo, map, or labeled diagram that helps clarify even the most difficult topics. Volumes one to three conclude with individual indexes; volume four has a cumulative index. The set also contains a Geologic Timescale, a 16-page glossary, and a topic outline. A solid addition to school or public libraries."

"A revision of Encyclopedia of Marriage and the Family, ed. by David Levinson (CH, Apr'96), this second edition of 2,000 pages is a significant expansion and revision of the original (791 pages). It is international in scope, combining all marriage and family lifestyles. Entries from 1995 were updated or deleted, some substantially changed to reflect the strong international focus. Some countries are the subject of little research, so for them data are sketchy; much more is available for Western industrialized or developing countries. Because marriage and family are the subjects of many disciplines, this source will be invaluable for faculty and students and for many academic programs. The alphabetically arranged entries (there are about 340) have cross-references and detailed bibliographies. They include topics such as annulment, bride-price, intergenerational relations, marriage ceremonies, mate selection, and rites of passage. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All libraries, especially academic."

“Tadao Ando (born September 13, 1941 in Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese architect whose approach to architecture is sometimes categorised as Critical Regionalism. Ando has led a storied life, working as truck driver and boxer before settling on the profession of architecture without having taken formal training.
He works primarily in exposed cast-in-place concrete and is renowned for an exemplary craftsmanship which invokes a Japanese sense of materiality, junction and spatial narrative through the pared aesthetics of international modernism.
In 1969, he established the firm Tadao Ando Architects & Associates. In 1995, Ando won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize medallion. He donated the $100,000 prize money to the orphans of the 1995 Kobe earthquake.” – Wikipedia

"The Bridge on the River Kwai opens in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Burma in 1943, where a battle of wills rages between camp commander Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) and newly arrived British colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness). Saito insists that Nicholson order his men to build a bridge over the river Kwai, which will be used to transport Japanese munitions. Nicholson refuses, despite all the various "persuasive" devices at Saito's disposal. Finally, Nicholson agrees, not so much to cooperate with his captor as to provide a morale-boosting project for the military engineers under his command. The colonel will prove that, by building a better bridge than Saito's men could build, the British soldier is a superior being even when under the thumb of the enemy. As the bridge goes up, Nicholson becomes obsessed with completing it to perfection, eventually losing sight of the fact that it will benefit the Japanese. Meanwhile, American POW Shears (William Holden), having escaped from the camp, agrees to save himself from a court martial by leading a group of British soldiers back to the camp to destroy Nicholson's bridge. Upon his return, Shears realizes that Nicholson's mania to complete his project has driven him mad. Filmed in Ceylon, Bridge on the River Kwai won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary British filmmaker David Lean, and Best Actor for Guinness.
