Bud Powell Trio - Bouncing With Bud (1962) [MFSL UDCD 703]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 266 MB | full scans @ 600dpi | Time 42:32 | HF + RS | 3% Recovery
Jazz/ Hard Bop | Storyville Records | Released 1962 | Catalog # STEREO 623230

Though the mercurial pianist Bud Powell's performances could be erratic, to say the least, he's heard in top form on this live 1962 performance from Copenhagen. Indulging in seemingly effortless glissandos and breathtaking displays of technical mastery, Powell, accompanied by Oscar Peterson's future bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, performs a high-spirited set that includes the Thelonious Monk classic "Straight, No Chaser" and a sensitive reading of Benny Golson's poignant standard, "I Remember Clifford."

Enter Joshua Breakstone.

One in every 20 people under the age of 50 in the United States owns a copy of this album. "Dark Side Of The Moon" remained on Billboard's 200 album chart for an amazing 15 years straight and then for another two when it was remastered back in 1994. It is currently the most successful album ever with upwards of 40 million copies sold world-wide. The question is... WHY?

Blood, Sweat and Tears - Child Is Father to the Man (1968) [MFSL UDCD II 742]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 298 MB | scans | Time 49:13 | HF + RS
Genre: Jazz-Rock mixed with Blues, Folk and Psych influences | Columbia Records | Originally released: April 1968 | Catalog #: CS 9619

This recording is the trunk of the tree jazz rock grew from(the "non-fusion" jazzrock). Al Kooper's vision was "right on it", as he had the notion to utilize horns in rockmusics with a "big band" concept in mind, wonderful expansive chords voiced by the section, not just the usual R&B riffing that was the state of things in pop musics until then.

Tony Bennett with Count Basie & His Orchestra - In Person! (1958) {MFSL UDCD II 743}

Vocal Jazz, Big Band | Columbia/ Sony | December 22 & 30, 1958 | Catalog # PIWK 707942

This is a fabulous record for anyone who's a fan of Tony Bennett or big-band singers in general. The Basie band backing is terrific; the sound is great, and Bennett's voice was in top form. If you've only recently become a Bennett fan in the past few years ago, you owe it to yourself to hear his voice when it was in peak form.

Although Roy Orbison made some great rock'n'roll recordings on the Sun label, his career only really became significant after he joined Monument. On that label, he was considered mainly a singles artist, but for those who want more of his music than just the hits, he recorded a few albums too. He mixed some but not all of his hits with other original songs plus cover versions of country and rock'n'roll songs. This particular album marked his Monument debut and the 2006 re-mastered version includes four bonus tracks, all recorded during the sessions in which Roy recorded the tracks that appeared on the original album.

Steve Winwood - Steve Winwood (1977) [MFSL UDCD II 691]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 247 MB | scans @ 600dpi | Time 37:25 | 3% recovery | HF + RS
Rock, Blue-eyed soul | Island/ Polygram Records | Released (US): 1989 | Catalog # 791261-2

Winwood went solo in 1974, building himself his own personal recording studio on his fifty-acre farm in Gloucestershire. He seemed almost in retirement as the years passed, but instead he was working hard on new material, laying down every track himself at his studio and accepting help only with an occasional lyric. In 1977 he released Steve Winwood to unenthusiastic sales. Winwood told People that his first solo effort "got buried," and when time came to cut the next album "it was a make-or-break situation. If it hadn’t been for Arc of a Diver, I might be a taxi driver."

Thelonious Monk - Genius Of Modern Music, Volume 2 (1952) [2001 RVG Remaster]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 314 MB | scans @ 600dpi | Time 1:00:45 | 3% recovery | HF + RS
Jazz/Bebop | Blue Note/ Columbia Records | Year of Release: 1952 | Catalog # BLP-1511

The music of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk has always inspired profound devotion amongst the hippest fans and musicians. Swing ear stars such as Coleman Hawkins and Cootie Williams were among his earliest and most vocal admirers, while Monk's influence on Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane (among others) was profound. As a result, his remarkable body of written work and recordings form an aesthetic cornerstone of modern jazz.

Billie Holiday - Body and Soul (1957) [MFSL UDCD 658]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 113 MB | scans @ 600dpi (18 MB) | Time 40:39 | 3% recovery | HF + RS
Jazz, Vocal | Verve | Year of release: 1957 | Catalog # (LP): MGV 8197

This edition of BODY AND SOUL is a dream come true for both collectors and audiophiles. The disc, one of Holiday's finest, features definitive versions of some of the century's most popular standards, including "Body And Soul," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "Embraceable You," and "Moonlight In Vermont." The sessions are from what many consider to be Lady Day's finest period, and understandably so, with Holiday's voice textured and still sprightly, Norman Granz at the production controls, and backing musicians like Jimmy Rowles, Ben Webster and Harry Edison.

These 1947 recordings are among the earliest documents we have of piano genius and jazz pioneer Thelonious Sphere Monk. It's hard to believe that he was finally hailed with acclaim in 1957 for ideas he'd had 10 years earlier!

Here's the 'Équinoxe' album from 1978. Every track is an electronic gem even though some crystal gazers now call this 'Dream' or 'New Age' music, WTF?! Anyway, my favourites are Équinoxe Part 5 and Équinoxe Part 7.

Of trumpeter Blue Mitchell's seven Riverside recordings (all of which have been reissued as CDs in the Original Jazz Classics series), only this set (along with three numbers on Blue Soul) feature Mitchell as the only horn. Joined by pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Roy Brooks, the trumpeter is typically distinctive, swinging and inventive within the hard bop genre. He performs four standards, Ronnell Bright's "Sweet Pumpkin," and the obscure "Avars," and a pair of originals in fine fashion. ~ Scott Yanow

Gaucho is probably the most perfect album ever made. It is in fact so perfect, that you don't notice how much work went into it. It was as if the album was doomed from the start and I bow deep to Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Gary Katz and Roger Nichols that they eventually got it finished.
