This album, recorded in 1967, had to wait 13 years to be released. But when it was, it was hailed as one of the greatest albums in this great vibist's long career. The quartet tackles both attractive and challenging material contributed by Hancock and Chambers as well as the leader.

Bobby Timmons - This Here Is Bobby Timmons (1960) [2003 Japan Mini LP XRCD][VICJ-61073]

Jazz, Hard Bop | Riverside Records | Catalog # 4 988002 443352

This is a classic Riverside set that has been reissued on CD in the Original Jazz Classics series. Pianist Bobby Timmons by early 1960 had already had successful stints with Art Blakey (where he contributed "Moanin'") and Canonball Adderley (writing "This Here" and "Date Dere"). For his first recording as a leader, Timmons (whose "funky" style was beginning to become very influential) performs those three hits along with his own "Joy Ride" and five standards in a trio with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Jimmy Cobb. Always more than just a soul-jazz pianist, Timmons (who effectively takes "Lush Life" unaccompanied) became a bit stereotyped later in his career but at this early stage was at the peak of his creativity. Essential music. ~ Scott Yanow

The Benedictine Monks Of Santo Domingo De Silos - Chant (1994) [MFSL UDCD II 725]
EAC+LOG+CUE | Flac (image) | 1 CD | 289 MB | scans @ 600dpi | Time: 58 mins | 3% recovery | HF + SM
Classical, Gregorian Chant, Medieval Music | Released: March 15, 1994 | EMI Angel | Catalog # 0 15775 47252 5

Who would ever have thought that Benedictine plainsong would ever cross over into the mainstream? Well, in some ways it is hardly surprising that it did. Anyone who has ever wandered around some of the great monasteries of Europe will have listened in awe to the chant of the monks at various prayer times. Simplistic beauty is the only way to describe it. The sound of male voices echoing through the cavernous halls of a Gothic monmastery church brings with it a quality which it would be impossible and unwise to recreate in the studio. This tuly is music which, if taken out of the architectural context for which it ewas intended, ceases to have the effect that was intended.

John Mellencamp - Scarecrow (1985) [MFSL UDCD-II 604]

Though the comparison has often been applied to him unfairly, it's fair to say that Scarecrow is to John Cougar Mellencamp what Born in the U.S.A. is to Bruce Springsteen: a hugely popular hit that solidified both his fan base and his critical reputation. The one important difference is that U.S.A.'s message was largely misinterpreted (Ronald Reagan co-opted the title song in a manner that's tragically ironic), while Scarecrow's ode to Mellencamp's native Indiana comes through loud and clear.

Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow (1975) [MFSL UDCD 727]

To those wondering whether to add this CD to their collection I recommend that you bear in mind Duke Ellington's words - "There are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music", because this CD belongs unquestionably to the first category. All instrumental, it contains a variety of styles - including ballad, reggae, funk, and rock - read the other reviews for the details. And finally, please don't ever pretend to have any inkling of what Jeff Beck is about, or what he is capable of, without being familiar with this particular album.

Personally I feel that this CD, which does not contain *all* of the famous tracks recorded by Mulligan and Webster together, is nevertheless quite adequate for anyone who wants a good, representative sample of what they achieved.

A unique, historic festival! The first edition of the North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 in the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague. Some numbers in those early days: six venues, three hundred artists and about nine thousand visitors. In this very first festival year internationally renowned jazz legends performed, such as Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz, as well as most Dutch avant-garde artists.

Ever hear the expression "Jack of all trades, master of none"? That's how I feel about Nilsson, really. There's a kind of charming insincerity about the man -- it's like it all comes so easily to him, he's got used to just gliding on by. Case in point: this record. It's charming, it really is. It's a bit like a magazine, dipping into everything, from children's songs to hard rock.

Jethro Tull - War Child (1974) [MFSL UDCD 745] *Repost*

Rock/ Progressive Rock | Chrysalis/EMI 2002 | Catalog #: 7243 5 41571 2 7

"War Child"'s achievement is in its music: some of the richest in recent memory, the arrangements are consistently stunning in their execution, courting excess but impossibly balanced by admirable dexterity. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that "Skating On The Thin Ice of The New Day" is one of my favorite songs (a musical epiphany, if you will).

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius (1976) [Epic 24-bit Remaster 2000]
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC | 347 MB | complete scans @ 600dpi | RS | 5% recovery
Jazz/ Fusion | Epic/Legacy EK 64977 | Catalog # 7464-64977-2

Jaco Pastorius was a meteor who blazed on to the scene in the 1970s, only to flame out tragically in the 1980s. With a brilliantly fleet technique and fertile melodic imagination, Pastorius made his fretless electric bass leap out from the depths of the rhythm section into the front line with fluid machine-gun-like passages that demanded attention. He also sported a strutting, dancing, flamboyant performing style and posed a further triple-threat as a talented composer, arranger and producer. He and Stanley Clarke were the towering influences on their instrument in the 1970s.
