Rare Earth - The Best Of: The Millennium Collection (2001)

Rare Earth was an unusual group. They literally did their own thing. They had their own style. Rare Earth is one of those rare groups that I find difficult to compare to other groups because they set a standard rather than following one. You can clearly hear an array of influences in their music, but their music was their own. Their music was unique and fun, and I highly recommend this CD if you liked long rock tracks and funk from the early 70s, or if you like good rock music regardless of the era. I wish this music was more common, then or now. Enjoy!

Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards (Limited Edition 2006)
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC (single files) | 3 CD | 995 MB | scans @ 300dpi | ANTI

Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards may seem like an unusual set upon which to make such a facetious judgment, given that the set is promoted as a collection of outtakes, leftovers, and rarities. But that's not quite true; for an artist like Waits, who has built his reputation on consistency and durability, it's somewhat appropriate to assess his value on the basis of his deep cuts. What's more, Orphans isn't really a career-spanning outtake collection at all, what with Tom going George Lucas on the proceedings and splicing in new songs and re-recordings. The end product, neatly compartmentalized into three style-segregated discs, is about as perfect a summary of Waits' appeal as can be found on the open market, a shadow greatest hits that offers testimony to his unique and diverse talents without recycling any of his album material.

Bizet - The Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de perles) - Jean Fournet
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC (single files) | 2 CD | 400 MB | scans @ 300dpi | Time 01:46:05 | Philips

EAC+CUE+LOG | FLAC (single files) | 152 MB | Booklet scans | DG 1986

This most peaceful and accepting of all Requiems finds its ideal benefactor in Carlo Maria Giulini, whose characteristically unhurried approach precisely captures the work's calming essence. The effect is hypnotic; at no time does the music reach - neediness, after all, is a remnant of the earthly life left behind. The tranquilizing effect is heightened by the choral sound, which evokes angels welcoming from on high. So utterly spellbinding is Giulini's account that when the final "rest in peace" from the Paradisum fades and fades and fades into gradual nothingness, you won't be able to tell where the music ends and heaven begins.

Mozart - Piano Concertos No.8 ("Lützow") and 26 ("Coronation") - Brendel
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC (single files) | 222 MB | artwork @ 600dpi | Philips 1983

If you need an introduction to Mozart, this starting point remains unmatched. While not my first Mozart, this collection was the first CD i owned. The purchase has never been regretted. Indeed, it maintains a pride of place in my shelves.
Brendel's performance throughout this series is impeccable. He delves into Mozart's music as if he'd been sitting in a salon with Mozart reviewing the composition. There is a strong sense of time and place in all the renditions of the master's expressive genius. Brendel has avoided the trap of "updating" the performance to some 20th Century idea of how they should be rendered. Brendel brings a sense of the delicacy to his performances without losing an iota of the power behind Mozart's compositions. Brendel seems to impart Mozart's evolving maturity as he recaptures the fourteen year duration over which these pieces were composed. Mozart would hear his music with pride were he here to enjoy Brendel's recreations.
