Everything that critics praise in the film is in this book - the dream sequence, the scene in the train, the character of Raymond's mother and so much more. In fact, there are three or four scenes from Condon's book that we were unable to put in the film - something I have always regretted. George Axelrod wrote a marvelous screenplay, which I followed faithfully. The actors were wonderful. The cameraman, Lionel Lindon, was the finest I ever worked with. In short,The Manchurian Candidate was one of those experiences where everything went right." John Frankenheimer P.S.: Star Frank Sinatra purchased the rights to the film in order to permanently remove it from circulation - until 1987. Although generally believed to have been withdrawn as a respectful reaction to Kennedy's death, it was also because Sinatra suspected that UA was illegally withholding profit-sharing. Coincidentally, Sinatra had also been featured as a would-be presidential assassin in Suddenly (1954). | ” |
