Vassilis Stavrakakis is one of Crete's foremost singers. He comes from an historic Cretan family which has given Cretan music many of its greatest singers and instrumentalists. He is also the cousin of Mitsos Stavrakakis, widely considered to be Crete's foremost poet of the tradition of mantinada, a rhyming couplet verse of 15 syllables which forms the core of Cretan song lyrics. Vassilis has for more than 30 years been the voice of his cousin's unique poetry. He is well known by lovers of Cretan music for his tireless performances, which often go on all night, as well as for the distinctive Cretan texture of his voice. He has worked together with Ross Daly for 25 years during which time they have together produced songs which have become an essential part of the Cretan musical repertoire today.

Medcezir is a unique project where thousands of years of Anatolian cultural heritage meet modern music. Turkish traditional instruments, western-classical instruments and electronic music all come together to form a broad palette of sound and style. The carefully selected program consists of new works from Turkish composers, careful arrangements of authentic folk melodies, classical Turkish music pieces and unique solo improvisations. Further, an integral part of Medcezir is how the pieces on this double CD are voiced uninterruptedly one after another, creating the arch of a single large composition.

The debut album from Csokolom is bursting with festive dance tunes, haunting laments, and a recurring Gypsy influence. The shuffling fiddle and walking bass that kick off "Amari Szi, Amari" wouldn't be out of place in a Southern American string band, but when arranger-musician Anti von Klewitz comes in with her distinctive lilting voice we are transported to another land. While concentrating on traditional Hungarian instrumentals and songs such as the gorgeous gem "Szerelem," von Klewitz also leads this accomplished group of violin, viola, kontra (Hungarian chord violin), and double bass players through original songs in several languages. A solid grounding in traditional music informs the single four-hour session, during which most of the material was recorded, lending it an energetic cohesiveness.

This album is a crossroad of sounds from the Balkans. Martha Mavroidi has written songs that blend musics, images and stories from different parts of the Balkans. Balkan means mountain and Rila is the highest mountain of the peninsula. There stands a monastery with a hidden garden. In its quiet yard the idea was born for these eleven songs.

The sextet that is Oneira is a collaboration of musicians of French, Iranian and Greek background, giving the group a uniquely classical and traditional Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern sound. They will be giving a small tour around France during the spring, ending with a five-date concert at the Résidence Vitrolles-Roucas in Vitrolles, France.

During its long run at the top, Orquesta Casino de la Playa included two of the biggest names in Cuban music. In 1945, Anselmo Sacasas left the band only to be replaced for just one year by Perez Prado, whose bright horn colors and contrasting instrumental textures gave Havana audiences a taste of his later audacity with his own orchestra. Though Prado's lasting influence crackles throughout this disc, center stage belongs to Miguelito Valdes, one of the most dramatic vocalists in the history of Cuban pop. Valdes' theme song "Babalu " is here ­ which Desi Arnaz rode to success in the U.S. ­ along with "Rumba Rumbero," whose rhythmic flourishes establish the vocalist as one of the earliest recorded human beatboxes. Perhaps the greatest pleasure of this disc is the Orquesta's version of Arsenio Rodriguez' "Bruca Manigua," which opens Ibrahim Ferrer's extraordinary Buena Vista Social Club solo CD. The version here shows how closely Social Club musical director Juan de Marcos Gonzalez followed Casino's arrangement on Ferrer's disc. But Valdes' delivery, which adds tongues of fire to the slow sizzle, runs rings around the remake.

Ima Galgen is a singer from the island of La Palma (Tijarafe), where he lives. Its links with the music first emerge through their participation in various music initiatives, from folklore (Tijarafe Folkloric Group) to the lyrical world coral as Vrandán voice (group of ethno-folk trend) as a singer in 80 next to the singer also Ricardo Caceres and Jorge Guerra later with whom he published "Arc de Colores" aimed at children (1995).

Kalyi Jag, Black Fire in English, play authentic traditional Gypsy music and have been doing so for almost 20 years. They are recognised as one of the foremost Gypsy folk ensembles in Eastern Europe today. The instruments they use are guitar, jug, board and oral improvisations.

Veretski Pass, Traditional East European Jewish Music is a recording by the trio of the same name made up of klezmer veterans Cookie Segelstein, Joshua Horowitz and Stuart Brotman. Much of the music on this recording comes from and near the region of the Veretski Pass (after which the group is named) in the Transcarpathian region of what is now Ukraine, the main crossroads through which the Jews traversed the Carpathian Bow. Some melodies were passed on to Cookie by her father who was born in the town of Nizhni Veretski, at the base of this pass. Others were collected by the members themselves in their travels throughout Eastern Europe. Much of the music on this CD is recorded for the first time.
