Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is probably the most performed of the late 19th century composers. In addition to the symphonies and orchestral favorites such as the various concertos for piano, violin and cello, there are also "Romeo and Juliet", the "1812 Overture," and "Capriccio Italien" which are probably his most familiar works brimming with melody, color and passion, they are what most people think of when they hear the name "Tchaikovsky." He was born on May 7, 1840 (by the Gregorian calendar; this was April 25 by the Julian calendar) in Votkinsk.
