It didn't sell too well but the boys took it more or less in stride and then went their separate ways. “Close To The Fire is a studio album by Dutch progressive rock band Kayak, released in 2000. It was a comeback album, the first since their split in 1982. The line-up was almost the same as the one that recorded the album Royal Bed Bouncer in 1975. Only guitarist Johan Slager was not involved. He was replaced by Rob Winter. By 1997, Kayak founder members Ton Scherpenzeel and Pim Koopman decided to work on new material. They had no name for their project yet, and it was not their intention to release the songs as Kayak. Apart from Scherpenzeel and Koopman, no former Kayak members were involved at this stage. Lead singer on the demo versions was Alex Toonen, from Dutch progressive rock band "For Absent Friends". Record companies were not immediately interested, and the songs were not developed further. Then, original Kayak singer Max Werner offered to have a go at the demo's. “Eyewitness is an album by the Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. The original LP was released in 1981. The album was recorded 'live' (but without audience) in a recording studio, with some overdubs added later. To create a 'live' atmosphere, Kayak fans were invited later to cheer and clap to the already recorded songs. The CD release was transferred from the original tapes, so it doesn't have the audience participation. The album has three new songs: Eyewitness, Who's Fooling Who and Only You And I Know.
The line-up of the band didn't feature background singers Irene Linders and Katherine Lapthorne anymore. After this album, the band broke up, only to reincarnate in 1999.		”

You wonder what Kayak was doing in early '80's, well good I might say, they keep the same formula and the music is another example of a good Kayak album, no more no less. The music on the base is pop prog with a good doze of mainstrem elements but not a comercial album IMO, kinda easy listning at first time, but in the end is a typical Kayak album, that is a good thing. Same manner of composing, same vocal choruses brings to the listner a pleasent album, to me was another ex of worthy investment in their music. The forte tracks are What's in aname, excellent piece full of great musicianship and intristing keybords. more..”
