Lady Dame Honor Harrington—starship captain, admiral, Steadholder, and Duchess—has spent decades defending the Star Kingdom of Manticore against all comers. Along the way, she has become the legend known as "the Salamander" from her habit of always being where the fire is hottest . . . and also a national bestseller (Ashes of Victory: #7, The Wall Street Journal).
But it's a big universe, and Honor's actions affect a lot of lives, not all of them human. And their actions affect her—a lesson "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" learns years before rising to command rank when a desperate battle against "pirates" who aren't quite what they seem begins her brilliant career.
Closer to home, in "Changer of Worlds," a secret that the alien treecats have kept from their human friends for hundreds of years is about to come out . . . and completely change the relationship between the two species forever.

When Avram claims the throne of his late father, King Buchan, his cousin Geoffrey contests the throne, raising an army of blue-clad northern troops to send against his southern rival's gray-uniformed forces. Drawing upon his considerable knowledge of military history and his love of alternate realities, veteran sf and fantasy author Turtledove has crafted a fantasy spin on the Civil War. Demonstrating his talent for mixing genres, the author of Darkness Descending produces one more winner in the field of alternative military fantasy. A good choice for most fantasy collections.

D. W. St. John,"Sisters of Glass"
Publisher: Elderberry Press | ISBN: 0965840727 | edition August 1999 | PDF | 496 pages | 1.1 mb

In Los Angeles, 2030, Karl Latte is an anomaly. In an age when everyone has a satellite receiver imbedded in his or her body, the burned-out policeman has no electronic implants. Even so, his ability to read minds makes him the only man able to rescue Romy, the last survivor of the first batch of genetically tailored female mates sold by Genesistems corporation. These women, known as Sisters, have been systematically killed in Platform 66, Genesistem's impenetrable headquarters off the California coast. Karl rescues Romy, and the pair go on the lam, with the predictability of their flight somewhat redeemed by Karl's budding realization that Romy is human. The novel comes to life when the pursuit grows hotter, with not only Genesistems (whose implants turn out to be mind-control devices) but a thuggish entrepreneur on the heels of the couple. St. John (A Terrible Beauty) deals better than most with the implications of the wealthy achieving a degree of immortality by being able to switch bodies at will, and the novel's climax is genuinely gripping, even if it is followed by an implausibly large victory for the forces of virtue. Though St. John's prose is of only average quality, the novel is an entertaining combination of hard-boiled action, futuristic romance and speculation about biotechnology.

Jerry Pournelle,"West of Honor"
Publisher: Baen | ISBN: 0671653474 | edition 11/14/2006 | PDF | 110 pages | 1 mb

Sooner or later, all civilizations age and decline, grow senile and die—either by conquest from without, or from internal rot. The final days of Western Civilization are signaled by the joining of the USA and the USSR into a ruthless and imperial state that spans first the Earth and then the Solar System. But, because it fails to hold the loyalty of its soldiers, it falters at the stars.
As well as carrying the CoDominium Future History into the galactic period, West of Honor introduces Jerry Pournelle's most important and influential character, John Christian Falkenberg.
"A military novel of the future as it ought to be told—by a man who knows not just the military and the future but the great art of storytelling."—Gordon R. Dickson.

Mercedes Lackey, Roberta Gellis,"This Scepter'd Isle"
Publisher: Baen | ISBN: 0743471563 | edition February 3, 2004 | PDF | 496 pages | 1.3 mb

In this exciting historical fantasy from veterans Lackey (Exile's Valor) and Gellis (Bull God), Rhoslyn and Pasgen Silverhair, elven twins kidnapped by Vidal Dhu and raised as Unseleighe Sidhe, receive alternative visions of the future. In one, a red-headed child born to Henry VIII ascends to the throne after the king's death, leading Britain into a prosperous and joyous future. In the other, another child rules, and with her coronation opens Britain to the fires of the Inquisition. Unbeknownst to Rhoslyn and Pasgen, however, the same double vision comes to their half-siblings among the Bright Court elves, Denoriel and Aleneil. Thus inspired, the two sets of twins set out to force the future they each desire. Denoriel attaches himself to Henry FitzRoy, the bastard son of Henry VIII, who may be the key to ensuring the red-headed child's rule, while Rhoslyn assumes a place in Princess Mary's household. FitzRoy, who grows from a sweet, innocent child into a sweet, innocent young adult, and Denoriel, who goes from reluctant nursemaid to dedicated almost father, get most of the attention, but it's the dark twins who provide the most interest. The mental, magical and eventually physical battle between the two sets of twins speeds the entertaining plot along, and knowledgeable readers—hey, that Anne Boleyn is going to lose her head—will enjoy the interplay between elven intervention and historical fact.
