This book is intended to be the first volume of three, to cover the history of the movement that we call the Crusades, from its birth in the eleventh cen tury to its decline in the fourteenth, and of the states that it created in the Holy Land and in neighbouring countries. I hope in a second volume to give a history and description of the kingdom of Jerusalem and its relations with the peoples of the Near East, and of the Crusades of the twelfth century, and in a third a history of the kingdom of Acre and die later Crusades.Whether we regard diem as the most tremendous and most romantic of Christian adventures or as the last of the barbarian invasions, the Crusades form a central fact in medieval history.

Swho need no introduction to English readers. Sir Walter Scott has performed that friendly office with the warmth and insight of appreciative genius. It was Saladin's good fortune to attract the notice not only of the great romancer, but also of King Richard, and to this accident he partly owes the result that, instead of remaining a dry historical expression, under the Arabic style of" el-Melik en-Nasir Salah-ed-din Yusuf ibn Ayyub" he has become, by the abbreviated name of " Saladin," that familiar and amiable companion which is called a household word. The idea, it is true, is vague and romantic.

Very few words are needed to introduce this volume. It is intended to give a history of the city of Jerusalem from about the year 30 to the present time. This period includes the siege and capture by Titus, the last revolts of the Jews, the Christian occupation of three hundred years, the Mohammedan conquest, the building by the Mohamedans of the Dome of the Kock, the Crusades, the Christian kingdom, the reconquest of the city, and a long period of Mohammedan occupation, during which no event has happened except the yearly flocking of pilgrims to the Church of the Sepulchre, and an occasional quarrel among the monks.There are here, surely, sufficient materials for the historian if only he knows how to use them.

Madden (The Fourth Crusade) has assembled an expert team to produce a popular history of the Crusades. While it focuses on the Middle Eastern crusades, it also treats those that took place in Europe, including the suppression of the Cathar religion in southern France, the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula.While not as much in the public eye, these crusades were influential in shaping European history. The volume is attractively illustrated and has a great number of boxes and sidebars offering a more detailed examination of people and events that are mentioned in the main text.

Extravehicular activities (EVA) require some of the most complex technical skills, sophisticated technologies, and human capabilities of all missions undertaken in space. The first of these EVAs took place on 18 March 1965 during the Soviet Union?s Voskhod 2 orbital mission when cosmonaut Alexei Leonov first departed the spacecraft in Earth orbit to test the concept.

This account of the life of Dr. Hugh Latimer Dryden is especially appropriate now. The NASA Hugh L. Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) was named in his honor exactly 20 years ago. This year we also celebrate 50 years of flight research here. It is fitting that people associated with the Center, with NASA as a whole, and those outside of NASA who are interested in the history of aviation and space, be reminded of Hugh Dryden’s enormous contributions. Hugh Dryden was a research scientist of the highest order, an aeronautics pioneer, the Director of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and then the first NASA Deputy Administrator.

Paleomagnetism is the study of the fossil magnetism in rocks. It has been paramount in determining that the continents have drifted over the surface of the Earth throughout geological time. The fossil magnetism preserved in the ocean floor has demonstrated how continental drift takes place through the process of sea-floor spreading.
