This text explores the different ways in which the various social practices in which people participate becomes signed as learning, how and why that occurs and with what consequences. It takes seriously the linguistic turn in social theory to draw upon semiotics and poststructuralism through which to explore the significance of lifelong learning as an emerging discourse in education. The text explores the different ways in which learning conveys meaning and is given meaning. Given this, lifelong learning therefore is a way, and a significant way, in which learning is fashioned. The text then explores the notion that, if learning is lifelong and lifewide, what precisely is learning as distinct from other social practices and how those practices are given meaning as learning.

A bright, fresh approach to Leviticus, connecting its unfamiliar world of animal sacrifice to the everyday in our lives and using ritual theory, popular culture and African theology in its discussion. This book draws on a variety of disciplines to undertake a unique analysis of Leviticus 1-7. Rather than studying the rituals prescribed in Leviticus as arcane historical/theological texts of little interest to the modern reader, or as examples of primitive rituals that have no parallel in Western society, this book provides many points of contact between animal sacrifice rituals and various parts of postmodern society. Modern rituals such as Monday Night Football, eating fast food, sending sons and daughters off to war, and even the rituals of modern academia are contrasted with the text of Leviticus. In addition, responses to Leviticus among modern African Christians and in the early church are used to draw out further understandings of how the language and practice of sacrifice still shapes the lives of people. This study takes a consciously Christian perspective on Leviticus. Leviticus is assumed to be an ongoing part of the Christian Bible. The usual Christian response to Leviticus is to ignore it or to claim that all sacrifice has now been superseded by the sacrifice of Jesus. This study refutes those simplistic assertions, and attempts to reassert the place of Leviticus as a source for Christian self-understanding. With the increasing number of images available electronically, automatic retrieval systems are becoming essential. This book introduces an absolute prerequisite for any such system: a metric, called the Earth Mover's Distance (EMD), for comparing images in terms of their appearance. This metric describes the amount of work that is necessary to transform one image into another, in a precisely defined mathematical sense, and in a flexible and perceptually meaningful manner. An efficient linear programming algorithm enables the computation of this metric fast enough to be used for the interactive retrieval of images from large repositories. The perceptual properties of the EMD, and the speed of its computation, lead to database navigation, a new paradigm for interacting with a repository of images. When navigating, the user is shown a very large number of images in response to a query. The EMD between pairs of images, together with a multidimensional scaling method, allows these images to be displayed so that similar images appear near to each other on the computer screen. In this way, the user can grasp at a glance what is returned, and can reach the images of interest with a small number of mouse clicks. A CD-ROM with full color images is included.Extensive benchmark evaluations and example retrieval systems show the usefulness of the EMD and the advantages of image database navigation.This book will be of interest to researchers, industrial professionals, and graduate and post-graduate students in the fields of Computer Vision; Image Processing; Data Mining; Digital Libraries; Psychophysics; Computer Science; Electrical Engineering.
