Judith Nies, "The Girl I Left Behind: A Narrative History of the Sixties".
Publisher: Harper | english | ISBN: 006117601X | edition: 2008 | PDF | 368 Pages | 15 Mb

At the height of the Vietnam War protests, twenty-eight-year-old Judith Nies and her husband lived a seemingly idyllic life. Both were building their respective careers in Washington—Nies as the speechwriter and chief staffer to a core group of antiwar congressmen, her husband as a Treasury department economist. They lived in the carriage house of the famed Marjorie Merriweather Post estate. But when her husband brought home a list of questions from an FBI file with Judith's name on the front, Nies soon realized that her life was about to take a radical turn. Shocked to find herself the focus of an FBI investigation into her political activities, Nies began to reevaluate her role as grateful employee and dutiful wife. In The Girl I Left Behind, she chronicles the experiences of those women who, like herself, reinvented their lives in the midst of a wildly shifting social and political landscape.

Stanislaus A. Blejwas, "The Polish Singers Alliance of America 1888-1998 : Choral Patriotism".
Publisher: University of Rochester Press | english | ISBN: 1580461476 | edition: 2005 | PDF | 400 Pages | 19 Mb

This book examines the history of the Polish Singers Alliance of America (PSAA) as an ideological organization. As a case study of an immigrant cultural organization that evolved demographically into an ethnic organization of the succeeding generations, it documents the extent to which the politics of the homeland engaged an immigrant and ethnic community over a century. This is a study of immigrant nationalism, as articulated by immigrant and ethnic singing societies. The survival of the Polish Singers Alliance as an ideological organization suggests considerations about the ability of an immigrant and ethnic culture to resist and to adapt to America's assimilative forces. The Alliance was a federation of amateur choirs. Its history cannot be understood without reference to the political fate of modern Poland over the last two centuries.

David L. Holmes, "The Faiths of the Founding Fathers".
Publisher: Oxford University Press | english | ISBN: 0195300920 | edition: 2006 | PDF | 240 Pages | 22 Mb

It is not uncommon to hear Christians argue that America was founded as a Christian nation. But how true is this claim? In this compact book, David L. Holmes offers a clear, concise and illuminating look at the spiritual beliefs of our founding fathers. He begins with an informative account of the religious culture of the late colonial era, surveying the religious groups in each colony. In particular, he sheds light on the various forms of Deism that flourished in America, highlighting the profound influence this intellectual movement had on the founding generation. Holmes then examines the individual beliefs of a variety of men and women who loom large in our national history. He finds that some, like Martha Washington, Samuel Adams, John Jay, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson's daughters, held orthodox Christian views.

Michael J. Makley, "The Infamous King Of The Comstock: William Sharon And The Gilded Age In The West ".
Publisher: University of Nevada Press | english | ISBN: 0874176301 | edition: 2006 | PDF | 328 Pages | 15 Mb

William Sharon was one of the most colorful scoundrels in the nineteenth-century mining West. He epitomized the robber barons of the nation’s Gilded Age and the political corruption and moral decay for which that period remains notorious, yet he was also a visionary capitalist who controlled more than a dozen of the greatest mines on Nevada’s mighty Comstock Lode, built the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, manipulated speculation and prices on the San Francisco Stock Exchange, and revived the collapsed Bank of California. One enemy called him "a thoroughly bad man—a man entirely void of principle," while a Comstock neighbor called him "one of the best men that ever lived in Virginia City." Both descriptions were reasonably accurate.

Kari Frederickson, "The Dixiecrat Revolt and the End of the Solid South, 1932-1968".
Publisher: Univ of Hawaii Pr | english | ISBN: 0807825948 | edition: 2001 | PDF | 328 Pages | 13 Mb

In 1948, a group of conservative white southerners formed the States' Rights Democratic Party, soon nicknamed the "Dixiecrats," and chose Strom Thurmond as their presidential candidate. Thrown on the defensive by federal civil rights initiatives and unprecedented grassroots political activity by African Americans, the Dixiecrats aimed to reclaim conservatives' former preeminent position within the national Democratic Party and upset President Harry Truman's bid for reelection. The Dixiecrats lost the battle in 1948, but, as Kari Frederickson reveals, the political repercussions of their revolt were significant.

Publisher: Praeger | english | ISBN: 0275994368 | edition: 2007 | PDF | 248 Pages | 11 Mb

Perhaps the most famous and admired soldier to fight in World War II was Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, who achieved immortality as the Desert Fox. Rommel's first field command during the war was the 7th Panzer Division—also known as the Ghost Division—which he led in France in 1940. During this campaign, the 7th Panzer suffered more casualties than any other division in the German Army, at the same time inflicting a disproportionate number of casualties upon the enemy. It took 97,486 prisoners, captured 458 tanks and armored vehicles, 277 field guns, 64 anti-tank guns and 4,000 to 5,000 trucks.

The China we know is a product of these vast conquests.

The "self-made" man is a familiar figure in nineteenth-century American history. But the relentless expansion of market relations that facilitated such stories of commercial success also ensured that individual bankruptcy would become a prominent feature in the nation's economic landscape. In this ambitious foray into the shifting character of American capitalism, Edward Balleisen explores the economic roots and social meanings of bankruptcy, assessing the impact of widespread insolvency on the evolution of American law, business culture, and commercial society.

Publisher: Tauris Parke Paperbacks | english | ISBN: 1850437548 | edition: 2005 | PDF | 408 Pages | 17 Mb

"I was alone in a world gone mad. Death was all around...Useless, filthy death." So wrote George Herbert Hill on the Battle of St. Quentin, which began on March 21, 1918 and consisted of trench mortars, mustard gas, chlorine gas, tear gas and a heavy artillery bombardment--said to be one of the most fierce and devastating of the Great War. Over the course of six days, thousands of British troops lost their lives and yet this would prove to be the turning point of the war--the end was in sight. Hill was just sixteen when he enlisted into the army.

Miriam S. Taylor, "Anti-Judaism and Early Christian Identity: A Critique of the Scholarly Consensus (Studia Post-Biblica)".
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | english | ISBN: 9004101861 | edition: 1997 | PDF | 207 Pages | 14 Mb

Against the scholarly consensus that assumes early Christians were involved in a rivalry for converts with contemporary Jews, this book shows that the target of patristic writers was rather a symbolic Judaism, and their aim was to define theologically the young church's identity. In identifying and categorizing the hypotheses put forward by modern scholars to defend their view of a Jewish-Christian "conflict", this book demonstrates how current theories have generated faulty notions about the perceptions and motivations of ancient Christians and Jews.

The Civil War was the greatest project the U.S. government had yet undertaken. Successful mobilization of great armies, factories, farms, and railroads was a signal achievement. In the years after the war the nation grew quickly and in a number of ways. It does not really matter which economic indicators are examined-the growth was stunning. It took only about twenty years after 1870 for railroad mileage, lumber production, and the value of manufactures to triple.
