The final show of the 2009 Beacon run was one for the ages! Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of The Dead added their own psychedelic flavor to this show, and former ABB keyboardist Chuck Leavell made a triumphant guest appearance on tunes like "Jessica" and "Mountain Jam."

Getatchew Mekurya plays the saxophone like no one else. He has developed a style of playing the part of the singer and the traditional accompaniment to the singer (the masinqo) with the saxophone, thus creating a whole new approach to sax playing that has set apart Ethiopian sax players from the rest of the world. This CD features Getatchew Mekurya from the early seventies, with a small band of great Ethiopian musicians. It features two vesions of the Ethiopian war song - the Shilela - that has been Getatchew Mekurya's trademark. His playing is always emotional and committed, his sound is always raspy and human. His ability to talk with his sax reminds me of my favorite Jazz sax player - Lester Young.

First things first: this EP single was released as part of the celebration of the recent "Record Store" day in support of indie-record stores and that's where I bought this. "Queen's First E.P." (4 tracks; 14 min.) was originally released in the UK in June, 1977, as a stop-gap release while awaiting the release of a new album later that yer ("News of the World"). It contains one song each from Queen's 2nd through 5th albums (going in reverse chronological order): the sweet "Good Old Fashion Lover Boy" (from A Day at the Races), the excellent "Death on Two Legs (Dedicated to...)" (from A Night at the Races), the Roger Taylor-written and sung "Tenement Funster" (from Sheer Heart Attack), and the epic closer "White Queen (As It Begin)" (from Queen II).
