Peter Erskine: Juni
Jazz | Playtime 50:43 | MP3 320k > 114 Mb
Label ECM 1657 | released 1997 | Covers

The Peter Erskine trio's graceful European style is expertly captured on JUNI, their fourth release on Manfred Eicher's ECM label. Erskine, a drummer of international fame who hassuccessfully proven his superb musical abilities in a myriad of styles, is perfectly at home in this delicate, extremely expressive setting. His partners John Taylor (piano) and Pelle Danielsson (bass) are, of course, very adept at the complexities of the European jazz style that touches on the classical chamber music tradition.

Florian Ross Trio: Big Fish and Small Pond
Genre: Jazz | Released: 2006 | Pt: 43:47 | MP3 320k | 161 Mb
Label: Intuition | Covers

'Big Fish & Small Pond' is the second album of Ross with the instrumentation of piano, bass and percussion. With bassist Dietmar Fuhr and drummer Stéphane Huchard – both also took part in his last quintet CD 'Home & Some Other Place' – he fuses into a musical personality who almost demonstrates the absurdity of the functional division within the band. The question as to why the world needs another piano trio album does not arise for Ross because what matters to him is the music, not instrumentations.

Charlie Haden: Land of the Sun
Jazz | APE | 325 Mb | Playtime 63:09 | Verve 2004

From free jazz and protest songs to American folk tunes, eclecticism has been bassist Charlie Haden's stock-in-trade. On his previous recording, Nocturne, Haden, Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and percussionist Ignacio Berroa explored the Latin ballad tradition. Here, save for Augstin Lara's "Solamente Una Vez (You Belong to My Heart)" (previously recorded by Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra) and Armando Manzanero's "Esta Tarde Vi Llover (Yesterday I Heard the Rain)," Haden focuses on the work of little-known Mexican composer Jose Sabre Marroquin. Haden's vivid and vibrant bass lines are augmented by Rubalcaba's transcendent arrangements, featuring Lovano and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon. Marroquin's romantic boleros and canciones, especially "Nostalgia" and "Paola's Song," exemplify the softer syncopations of the Latin sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Eberhard Weber: The Colours of Chloë :: 1974 :: ECM 1042
Ape + cue > 182 Mb | MP3 320k > 94 Mb
Jazz | Playtime 40:30 | Artwork

Eberhard Weber's first record remains his most well-known and influential. An ambitious work of what might be called symphonic jazz, The Colours of Chloë helped to define the ECM sound -- picturesque, romantic, at times rhythmically involved, at others minimalistic and harmonically abstruse.

Eric Alexander & Grant Stewart: Cookin' :: 2006
Jazz | Playtime 67:24 | MP3 320k > 140 Mb | Covers

In the grand tradition of such inspired pairings as Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis or Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, tenor titans Eric Alexander and Grant Stewart team up again as Reeds and Deeds for a new outing that again highlights the saxophonists' complimentary styles.
Ably supported by David Hazeltine, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth the pair covers a smart mix of standards from the bossa strains of "Black Orpheus" to the soulful Ammons classic "Hittin the Jug".
