Louis Sclavis: Lost on the way
Jazz | Flac | 343 Mb | Log+Cue | MP3 320k | 130 Mb
Released 2009 | Label ECM 2098 | Time 56:57 | Front

A new year, a new Sclavis quintet - this one born out of the wish to continue the work begun back in 2005 with "L'imparfait des langues" (and retaining guitarist Delpierre and drummer Merville from that project) and to invent new musics in which to lose oneself. To uncover fragments of memory by chance, while chiseling at new ideas. Track titles allude to the voyages of Ulysses. Sclavis: “I wanted to travel somewhere unknown, letting myself be blown from Scylla to Charybdis by mastering the winds and the torrents of return to re-evoke a history” - along the way looking at aspects of jazz, rock and modern composition from unfamiliar perspectives.

Jon Balke: Siwan
Folk, ethnic | Time 64:15 | MP3 320k | Size 150 Mb
Released 2009 | Label ECM 2042 | Covers

The competent and successful musico-cultural eutection promoted by ECM founder Manfred Eicher since the release of Jan Garbarek/Hilliard Ensemble's Officium (ECM, 1993) takes another quantum step with keyboardist Jon Balke's imaginative and far reaching Siwan. Balke enters a realm of cross-cultural pollination evolving from Officium, through that same collaboration's expanded vision on Mnemosyne (ECM, 1999) to John Potter's excellent Dowland Project outings: Care-Charming Sleep (ECM, 2001) and Romaria (ECM, 2006).

John Surman: Brewster's Rooster
Jazz | Time 64:45 | MP3 320k | Size 133 Mb
Released 2009 | Label ECM 2046 | Covers

After ECM recordings with organ (“Rain on the Window”), strings (“The Spaces In Between”), brass ensemble (“Free and Equal”), choir (“Proverbs and Songs”), and early music experiments with the Dowland Project (“Romaria”). John Surman offers an album unequivocally jazz in its orientation. Soulful ballads, hard-driving pieces and fiery improvisations are all to be found here, and Surman is in best creative form on baritone and soprano saxophones. Both Surman and guitarist Abercrombie have long musical relationships with powerhouse drummer DeJohnette, and all three are in accord at a high level. A strong showing, too, for bassist Drew Gress in his ECM debut. Music is all by Surman, apart from “Slanted Sky” by old comrade John Warren, and the timeless “Chelsea Bridge” of Billy Strayhorn.

Marillyn Crispell: Vignettes
Jazz | Time 68:13 | MP3 320k | Size 165 Mb
Released 2008 | Label ECM 2027 | Full scan

After three acclaimed trio albums –“Nothing Ever Was, Anyway”, “Amaryllis”, “Storyteller” – a solo album by the innovative American pianist. “Vignettes” spotlights new developments in Marilyn Crispell’s work. An ‘aesthetics of space, beauty and tenderness’ prevails in her recent work, and the ratio of lyrical free ballads to eruptive playing has changed significantly. Fifteen pieces by Crispell – plus Arve Henriksen’s “Stilleweg” and “Cuida Tu Espíritu” by Jayna Nelson.

Crispell, Peacock, Motian: Amaryllis
Jazz | Time 54:57 | MP3 320k | Size 169 Mb
Released 2001 | Label ECM 1742 | Full scan

Return of the great American jazz trio that delivered the poll-topping "Nothing Ever Was, Anyway" in 1997. Material heard on "Amaryllis" is by turns thoughtful, touching, joyous and viscerally exciting. Some of the songs are well known - almost classics of new jazz - including Crispell's "Rounds", Peacock's "Requiem" and "December Wings, Motian's "Conception Vessel". There are also a number of startlingly effective free improvised ballads. As leader Marilyn Crispell says, "There's a great depth of communication, a rare delicacy. " Interaction between the musicians is exceptional.

Steve Kuhn: Non Fiction
Jazz | Time 39:19 | MP3 320k | Size 91 Mb
Released 1978 | Label ECM 1124 | Covers

An interesting set of inside/outside music with a bit more energy than the more stereotypical ECM set, this set of five originals is performed by pianist Steve Kuhn (who was really developing his own original sound around this time), Steve Slagle (heard on alto, soprano and flute), bassist Harvie Swartz, and drummer Bob Moses. This is a fine release that was soon overshadowed by Kuhn's collaborations with singer Sheila Jordan. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Richard Beirach: EON
Jazz | Time 38:16 | MP3 320k | Size 88 Mb
Released 1975 | Label ECM UCCU-5194 (Japan) | No covers

Richie Beirach's well-programmed set begins with an intense reworking of Miles Davis' "Nardis." The introductory rhythm vamp, through its numerous reappearances, functions as an idee fixe, thereby allowing Beirach to fragment the tune's melodic and harmonic components so that space and the piano's overtonal timbres interact (along with melody and harmony) as co-equal musical elements. Dave Liebman's "Places" was a poignant solo essay capturing echoes and images of bittersweet remembrances. Throughout, Beirach was ably assisted by the excellent musicianship of his colleagues from Lookout Farm, bassist Frank Tusa and percussionist Jeff Williams.--Chuck Berg

Werner Pirchner: EU
Classical | Time 98:29 | MP3 320k | Size 220 Mb
Released 1986 | Label ECM 1314/15 | Covers

Werner Pirchner is exceedingly difficult to classify. The title of this release, EU, is not about geography or politics, but refers to the dialectic (in German) between "E-Musik" (E = ernsthaft = "serious" music) and "U-Musik" (U = Unterhaltung = popular music). "EU" suggests that the music on this recording is a synthesis of both.

Julian Priester: Love Love
Jazz | Time 37:45 | MP3 320k | Size 89 Mb
Released 1974 | Label ECM 1044 | Covers

Recorded on the heels of Julian Priester's stint with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters band, 1974's LOVE, LOVE holds some of the same flavor as the Headhunters' progressive, funky jazz. Yet LOVE, LOVE was recorded for ECM, and the date also has a good deal of the abstract complexity associated with that label. Priester plays trombone, whistle flute, percussion, and synthesizers, and is backed by a nine-piece band that lays down sinuous, African-flavored grooves, synthesizer-fueled spacescapes, and instrumental free jazz flights.

Steve Reich: Tehillim
Classical | Time 29:58 | MP3 320k | Size 78 Mb
Released 1982 | Label ECM 1215 | Scan Inc.

Steve Reich is the self-renewer of his one-time minimalist peers, able to revitalise his output just at the point when accusations of resting on laurels start to surface. By 1980, he had seemingly exhausted the possibilities of eight years of harmony-based writing, and aural wallpaper felt worryingly close. Tehilim changed all that: with its grounding in Hebrew cantilation and complex though always dancing rhythmic surround, this was Reich at his absolute best.

Egberto Gismonti: Árvore
Jazz | Time 32:00 | MP3 320k | Size 75 Mb
Released 1973 | Label ECM Carmo 1 | Covers

About the GISMONTI 1973 album, it is probably one of the best (although they are nearly all excellent). This album his probably the best to enter into Gismonti's 70's work. It is a perfect introduction. As always with Gismonti, it is highly sophisticated, creative, inspired and emotional. It has this somewhat "rough" sounding of most early 70's Gismonti's works, but paradoxaly, it remains very elegant too. Last but not least, it has Gismonti's vocals that are so emotive and beautiful (and that we may finally miss in later Gismonti's works...). Therefore, this album is probably the best choice to become a fan of Gismonti's early work (rather than hating it!). It would be a pity to hate it as, at the end, Gismonti's early work is certainly the most fantastic and spirited he ever made... --Amazon

Dewey Redman Quartet: The Struggle Continues
Jazz | Time 44:47 | MP3 320k | Size 102 Mb
Released 1982 | Label ECM 1225 | Covers

A solid, thoughtfully-programmed showcase for one of the most capable and encyclopedic of modern saxophone stylists. Mr. Redman has a warmly commanding sound and a broad idiomatic range, from ballad lyricism to bebop chord changes to modal playing to free-form. The news here is his growth as a composer and his ability to focus the energies of a band sparked by the great Ed Blackwell on drums.” So wrote the New York Times in 1983 of Dewey Redman’s “The Struggle Continues”, a disc that followed powerful Redman performances on ECM with Keith Jarrett’s ‘American Quartet’ and the Old And New Dreams band. Redman’s quartet repertoire, largely written by the leader, is capped by a tune from another great saxophonist: “Dewey Square” by Charlie Parker. Recorded 1982, and never before released on CD.~ ecm records.

John Cage: Sonatas and Interludes
Classical | Time 127:54 | MP3 320k | Size 355 Mb
Released 2003 | Label ECM 1842 | Scan inc.

“As well as being a superb technician,” wrote The Guardian, “Herbert Henck always puts together his discs with great thoughtfulness.” “Locations” gives the most complete indication of Henck’s musical range yet. He is heard, once again, as an insightful interpreter of modern music, and also as a most convincing improviser. Disc One is devoted to an impeccable account of John Cage’s seminally important “Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano”. Disc Two features two groups of improvised “fantasies”, each of them taped as “freestyle extensions” of Henck’s interpretative work.
