Paul Motian: Dance
Jazz | Time 39:43 | MP3 320k | Size 95 Mb
Released 1978 | Label ECM 1108 | Scan inc.

Although drummer Paul Motian is the leader of this trio set with the brilliant bassist David Izenzon, it is Charles Brackeen, heard on tenor and soprano, who is generally the solo star. Motian's six originals (which include "Waltz Song," "Kalypso," "Asia" and "Lullaby") contain plenty of variety and generally live up to their titles.

Paul Motian: Tribute
Jazz | Time 37:51 | MP3 320k | Size 88 Mb
Released 1975 | Label ECM 1048 | Covers

This effort by drummer Paul Motian does not say who the "tribute" is for. Two numbers (the leader's "Victoria" and "Song for Che") feature the trio of guitarist Sam Brown (an underrated player), bassist Charlie Haden and Motian; the remaining three songs (a pair of Motian originals and Ornette Coleman's "War Orphans") add the second guitar of Paul Metzke and the fiery alto of Carlos Ward. Fine post-bop music that contains more energy than many ECM recordings. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Hans Otte: Das Buch der Klänge
Classical | Time 77:36 | MP3 320k | Size 150 Mb
Released 1999 | Label ECM 1659 | Scan Inc.

Herbert Henck's campaign for recognition for undervalued 20th century composers continues with this salute to the German composer Hans Otte. Henck here celebrates Otte's "Book of Sounds" as "one of the most remarkable creations in contemporary piano music, a work which has lost none of its beauty, innocence and power in the 20 years since it was written". Essentially contemplative, it "lets sounds be sounds" as John Cage said, and gives them room to breathe. Withdrawal, transparency and austerity are the hallmarks of this music.

John Cage: The Seasons
Classical | Time 75:51 | MP3 320k | Size 182 Mb
Released 2000 | Label ECM 1696 | Front cover

The first appearance of the work of John Cage on ECM is cause for celebration. This recording goes beyond the artistic-nihilistic gestures and the anarchic-Zen gags to get at the essence of Cage's musical thought. Cage's playfulness can't be - and shouldn't be - muzzled, of course, but here one also experiences the beauty and the sensuality of the compositions, thanks to the input of two musicians who worked closely with the composer: conductor Dennis Russell Davies and pianist Margaret Leng Tan. The album includes a premiere recording of "Seventy-Four" which Cage wrote especially for the American Composers Orchestra.

Jon Balke - Batagraf: Statements
Jazz | Time 54:32 | MP3 320k | Size 133 Mb
Released 2005 | Label ECM 1932 | Covers

Batagraf is less a group or band than a collection of like-minded musicians who have come together to explore ideas related to rhythm and language. Made up of four percussionists and five vocalist/reciters, along with but two "normal" instrumentalists (trumpet and alto saxophone) and Balke himself playing electronic keyboard and percussion, plus some vocals and sound processing, one might think that the music would be percussion heavy.

Dino Saluzzi: Ojos Negros
Jazz | Time 58:13 | MP3 320k | Size 141 Mb
Released 2007 | Label ECM 1991 | Scan inc.

The long-awaited album by the Argentinean bandoneon giant Saluzzi and German cellist Lechner, known both for her work with the Rosamunde Quartet and her explorations outside it. It was, for instance, Lechner’s interest in Tango Nuevo that made the ongoing Saluzzi/Rosamunde “Kultrum” collaboration possible in the mid-90s; Anja and Dino have toured widely as a duo, too. Jazz Review editor Richard Cook described one of their concerts as being “as close to perfection as any music-making I can recently recall". Essentially chamber music with inspirational roots in Argentinean traditions “Ojos Negros” puts the emphasis on Saluzzi’s finely-crafted compositions but also has a strong improvised component.

Dino Saluzzi: Once upon a Time - Far Away in the South
Jazz | Time 55:29 | MP3 320k | Size 121 Mb
Released 1986 | Label ECM 1309 | Covers LQ

Sultry, cool, and moody. One of the best combos of instruments I have ever heard. This hard to find CD needs to be re-issued and available to listening audiences right away.I've had this on an old cassette for years. I can't get tired of it. Luckily, I just scored the last issue CD. Like the late, great Piazzola the sound of mood tango has enormous subtleties and power. Saluzzi takes this music medium one step further, weaving dreamscapes of bandoneon, with phrases of bass and trumphet and light percussion that tell some strange stories. Grab a copy somewhere, folks! By Carlo D'Anna "Mortimersnerd"

Jon Balke: Book of Velocities
Jazz | Time 58:13 | MP3 320k | Size 135 Mb
Released 2007 | Label ECM 2010 | Scan inc.

On paper, Norwegian pianist Jon Balke's first solo album reads like challenging stuff: a collection of eighteen short improvisations, grouped into five sub-sections (four "chapters" and an "epilogue"), and concerned as much with the velocities with which the piano's strings can be struck—and how they can be struck—as with thematic or harmonic development. Something for fellow pianists to marvel at and the general listener to struggle with.

Dino Saluzzi: Kultrum
Jazz | Time 51:40 | MP3 320k | Size 126 Mb
Released 2008 | Label ECM 1251 | Covers

Saluzzi's ECM discography was launched with the solo album Kultrum, spontaneously created in the studio and an enduring example of the bandoneonist's art as "storyteller." Dino described the music as "an imaginary return" to the little towns and villages of his childhood. The vividness of his musical sketches was not lost on reviewers: "Reworking elements of tango, South American Indian music, backwater folk tunes, and other root sounds, his breadth of feeling makes for remarkable listening" - Down Beat.

Alexei Lubimov: Der Bote
Classical | Time 56:20 | MP3 320k | Size 135 Mb
Released 2002 | Label ECM 1771 | Covers

Comprising three centuries of noted composers' "minor" works, Lubimov's Der Bote (The Messenger) bears out its title with short, introspective pieces that capture thoughts of nostalgia, mourning, and meditation. The first work, C.P.E. Bach's 1787 Fantasy, sounds amazingly avant-garde, full of surprising darts and turns. And the experimental 20th-century composer John Cage's "In a Landscape" is an even bigger surprise. Instead of random keyboard plink-plunks, it's a diaphanous Debussyan tone poem, bound to startle party guests playing Name That Composer.

Jon Balke: Diverted Travels
Jazz | Time 51:11 | MP3 320k | Size 119 Mb
Released 2004 | Label ECM 1886 | Scan inc.

As Jon Balke moves further and further away from his '80s work with the Miles-informed group Masqualero, he moves deeper into abstraction, experimenting with instrumental combinations that allow for a broad range of textures within an ever-expanding concept. Since the mid-'90s, with his constantly shifting Magnetic North Orchestra, he has explored the juncture between composition and improvisation in a way that assimilates an increasing number of world music influences, yet never seems to sound directly like any of them. Diverted Travels , his latest project with a radically reworked Magnetic North Orchestra, may be his most obscure release yet; it may also be his most successful.

John Abercrombie: Arcade
Jazz | Time 39:30 | MP3 320k | Size 99 Mb
Released 1979 | Label ECM-UCCE 3026 (japan) | Scan inc.

Clearest of every possible detail and idea, Abercrombie acts bravely into each of his senses, plus diereses the possibly minimal expectation of his jazz-rock orotund connections and of his multi-crafted (well, at least his own strung, compositions, plus some effects in boosting up a decibel of impressionism) into a sum of classic lighted great recordings. Arcade is one summarily pointing the milestone of all the great experiences and expressions, and, frankly, it’s not an over-estimated value.

Enrico Rava, Dino Saluzzi: Volver
Jazz | Time 47:24 | MP3 320k | Size 119 Mb
Released 1988 | Label ECM 1343 | Scan inc.

Trumpeter Enrico Rava and his quartet (with guitarist Harry Pepl, bassist Furio Di Castri and drummer Bruce Ditmas) meet the Argentinian bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi on six group originals. Rava's introverted yet inwardly passionate playing matches well with Saluzzi's modern tangos, and the results are fairly accessible yet still exploratory. An intriguing set. ~ from allmusic.

Dino Saluzzi: Andina
Jazz | Time 43:10 | MP3 320k | Size 103 Mb
Released 1988 | Label ECM 1375 | Scan inc.

Mesmer would be proud. This album presents Saluzzi's bandoneon without accompaniment, unlike most of his recent work performed in a large or small group. The pieces are all cut of the same cloth and show a surprising sensitivity and what might be called 'songfullness'. Definitely worth having for those times when listening is on your agenda, and you can give your full attention. Best in the dark, on a quiet evening. ~ Amazon.

Jon Balke: Kyanos
Jazz | Time 46:59 | MP3 320k | Size 110 Mb
Released 2002 | Label ECM 1822 | Covers

The first ECM album in nine years by Norwegian pianist/composer/arranger Jon Balke and his “orchestra”, now streamlined to a septet of top-flight Scandinavian soloists. “Kyanos” is Greek for “blue”, and the album pulsates with intense colour. Balke has developed into an exceptionally skilled arranger and his blending of textures as well as his strong melodic sense are to the fore in this striking and arresting album. Like Duke Ellington or Gil Evans before him, Balke writes with the idiosyncratic sounds and personalities of his musicians in mind, and makes the fullest use of the resources available to him. He still understands jazz as “the sound of surprise”, and his melodies take unexpected turns.
