Armand Van Helden - Greatest Hits (1997)
Dance, House | FLAC (tracks+.cue) Lossless | 379 MB
Label: Strictly Rhythm Released: March 25, 1997

Armand Van Helden is the self-styled bad boy of New York house, a whirlwind of remixes for anyone with cash (large amounts of it only), street tough, hip-hop-style posturing, and hard, raw, no-nonsense house beats. It was those beats that held the secret: a breath of fresh air compared to New York's pumping electro-disco or the smug vocals and skippy beats of garage. Tracks like "Witch Doktor" (the opener here) threw in raw, drum-machine funk, sirens, and vocal samples, bouncing and stropping around with tons and tons of attitude. He's found fame with his remix of Tori Amos's "Professional Widow" and the 2 Futur 4 U album. This is all far less slick: the tracks collected here are pleasingly tribal, primitive, rugged, and crudely addictive, a document of the vinyl birth of a true boogie monster.

Label: Double moon Released: October 03, 2006

Selim Sesler was born into a professional reed horn family in 1957 in Kesan, a village located in Edirne. Selim began his love affair with music by learning how to play the reed horn, however during the 1960s many children from drum and reed horn families began to play Turkish Classical ensemble instruments and Sesler followed the trend by jumping on the bandwagon and learning how to play the clarinet.

Kirpi - The Song (2004)
World music, Instrumental, Electronic | FLAC (tracks+.cue) Lossless | 312 MB
Label: Mega music Released: July 23, 2004

Never mind the bad first impression. It's having two or three in a row that really kills you. Turkish clarinet player BÃulent Altinbas, has assembled an intriguing collection of ethnic jazz in The Song, but listeners have to get past three opening techno/ambient songs of dubious value to get there. The initial tracks are so at odds with the rest that it's hard to explain them, aside from an ill-advised attempt at broadening the recording's commercial appeal. "The Song" used at "Buddha-Bar VII" by David Visan.

Label: Double moon Released: January 1, 2005

As one of Turkey’s leading clarinetists, Hüsnü Şenlendirici’s versatility enables him to work with all of the major stars domestically and opens doors to collaborations internationally. Taking us on a musical journey whether he is solo or accompanied Şenlendirici marries the enticing melodies evocative of his Anatolian heritage—particularly his Aegean homeland’s musical traditions—with the jazz sensibilities of the West. Upon forming his present band, Laço Tayfa, the opportunity to collaborate with the famous American ensemble, the Brooklyn Funk Essentials, culminated in the release of ‘In the Buzzbag’, consisting of interpretations of traditional melodies and funk/acid jazz for the album. Following that first release on Doublemoon Records, Şenlendirici has continued to play his snaking eastern melodies with lavish ornamentation or wild improvisations against complex drummed rhythms to release ‘Bergama Gaydası’ and ‘Hicaz Dolap.’ Şenlendirici has also worked with Doublemoon cohort Mercan Dede to the delight of music aficionados everywhere.

Smadj presents - S.O.S. (2005)
World music, Instrumental, | FLAC (tracks+.cue) Lossless | 339 MB
Label: Double moon Released: November, 2005

Tunisian born, Parisian musician Jean-Pierre Smadja (Smadj) grew up listening to Oriental, Brazilian, funk, soul, and folk music. Entering a jazz school at age 15 due to his intense interest in the guitar, Smadj’s musical development came to be characterized by transforming traditional jazz styles into eclectic sounds. This interest in the mechanics of making music led Smadj to pursue a degree in sound engineering, which led to a fruitful career as a recording & sound engineer for famous classical and folk musicians. Releasing his first album in 1994, it wasn’t until 2000 that Smadj became recognized on an international scale for his signature blending of acoustic and electronic sounds on “Equilibriste”, which would ascend on the “European World Music Charts” to the number 4 position. In 2002, Smadj joined fellow “ud magician”, French musician Mehdi Haddab, for a special project that would transport the oud to the 21st century in “Duoud”.

Buika and Chucho Valdes - El Ultimo Trago (2009)
Latin, Nu Jazz, Bossa Nova | Mp3 320 Kbps | 101 Mb
Label: Wea International Released: October 27, 2009

It's tough to think of a more powerful duo than Majorcan singer Buika and Cuba's iconic pianist Chucho Valdes. But when you add the rancheras and boleros made famous by Chavela Vargas, you get a poignant, modernized version of old standards made new again. El Ultimo Trago is an homage to Vargas on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Hard living and drinking caused the legendary singer to take a 15 year break from performing so it seems fitting that the album's name means 'The Last Drink.'

Ralph Towner & Paolo Fresu - Chiaroscuro (2009)
Jazz, Smooth Jazz | Mp3 320 Kbps | 115 Mb
Label: ECM Music Released: November 09, 2009

An exciting new duo, of unusual instrumentation, initiated by American master guitarist Ralph Towner. Towner’s acoustic guitar concept has long since absorbed and abstracted influences from baroque music, contemporary composition, Brazilian music and jazz, above all the jazz of Bill Evans. In this programme of Towner originals and improvisations, the sole cover version is “Blue In Green”. the Bill Evans/Miles Davis tune from the classic “Kind of Blue” album – an apt choice for Sardinia-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu, whose pure and elegant tone still carries echoes of early Miles. Towner’s own pieces offer continually changing landscapes for Fresu’s horn to grace, in a very poetic and lyrical set whose gradations of light and shade, of sound and shadows, are beautifully recorded. “Chiaroscuro” is Towner’s 22nd ECM disc as a leader and Fresu’s first - although the trumpeter guest-starred on Carla Bley’s prize-winning “The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu”, issued on WATT in 2007.
