Publisher: Praeger | ISBN: 1567205259 | edition 2002 | CHM | 250 pages | 1,65 mb

With much of the "Asian Miracle" destroyed and much of the Western world's awe for Asian ways of managment dissipated, organizations in East Asia are changing with such speed that most of our knowledge about them becomes quickly outdated. Richter takes stock of East Asian management practices, as they are perceived so far, and he discusses the strategies proposed by others to help Asian management redesign itself for the future--including a long-term agenda for change based on the cultural heritage of Confucianism.

The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important to understand combustion mechanisms, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. This monograph presents a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, Peters considers the three distinct cases of premixed, nonpremixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. By demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a cohesive presentation, this book makes a unified contribution to engineering and applied mathematics.

In the spirit of Doyle Brunson's Super System, Arnold Snyder's Blackbelt in Blackjack is an underground gambling classic written by one of the grand masters of blackjack and a legend. This newly revised and updated edition is now made available for the first time to a national audience. This is blackjack as a martial art, targeted for serious and professional players looking to win real money at the game. Snyder reveals tips and tricks used by the pros-shuffle tracking, team play, multiple deck camouflage techniques so that the casino can't detect that the player is using winning techniques, and much more. 21 powerful chapters include a complete course on beating blackjack: the devastating red 7 count, the hi-lo count, the zen count, the true count, and so much more.

Does the business of daily living distance us from life's mysteries? Do most Americans value spiritual thinking more as a hobby than as an all-encompassing approach to life? Will the concept of the soul be defunct after the next few generations? Child psychiatrist and best-selling author Robert Coles offers a profound meditation on how secular culture has settled into the hearts and minds of Americans. This book is a sweeping essay on the shift from religious control over Western society to the scientific dominance of the mind. Interwoven into the story is Coles's personal quest for understanding how the sense of the sacred has stood firm in the lives of individuals--both the famous and everyday people whom he has known--even as they have struggled with doubt.

Biological sciences have been revolutionized, not only in the way research is conducted - with the introduction of techniques such as recombinant DNA and digital technology - but also in how research findings are communicated among professionals and to the public. Yet, the undergraduate programs that train biology researchers remain much the same as they were before these fundamental changes came on the scene.

Synesthesia: A Union of the Senses
Publisher: The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262032961 | edition 2002 | PDF | 424 pages | 17,9 mb

For decades, scientists who heard about synesthesia hearing colors, tasting words, seeing colored pain just shrugged their shoulders or rolled their eyes. Now, as irrefutable evidence mounts that some healthy brains really do this, we are forced to ask how this squares with some cherished conceptions of neuroscience. These include binding, modularity, functionalism, blindsight, and consciousness. The good news is that when old theoretical structures fall, new light may flood in. Far from a mere curiosity, synesthesia illuminates a wide swath of mental life. In this classic text, Richard Cytowic quickly disposes of earlier criticisms that the phenomenon cannot be "real," demonstrating that it is indeed brain-based. Following a historical introduction, he lays out the phenomenology of synesthesia in detail and gives criteria for clinical diagnosis and an objective "test of genuineness." He reviews theories and experimental procedures to localize the plausible level of the neuraxis at which synesthesia operates. In a discussion of brain development and neural plasticity, he addresses the possible ubiquity of neonatal synesthesia, the construction of metaphor, and whether everyone is unconsciously synesthetic.

Karate comes from the Japanese island of Okinawa (oh-kih-NAH-wah). It is located almost halfway between China and the main islands of Japan. People going to China or Japan often stopped in Okinawa. This made it a place where traders, soldiers, and local people traded goods as well as ideas about hand-to-hand fighting. In the 1700s, several styles of martial arts were created there. Together, they were known as Okinawa-te, or Okinawan hand. In the 1900s, a man named Funakoshi Gichin brought the styles of Okinawa-te together and called them karate.

Most aspects of our private and social lives?-our safety, the integrity of the financial system, the functioning of utilities and other services, and national security--now depend on computing. But how can we know that this computing is trustworthy? In Mechanizing Proof, Donald MacKenzie addresses this key issue by investigating the interrelations of computing, risk, and mathematical proof over the last half century from the perspectives of history and sociology. His discussion draws on the technical literature of computer science and artificial intelligence and on extensive interviews with participants. MacKenzie argues that our culture now contains two ideals of proof: proof as traditionally conducted by human mathematicians, and formal, mechanized proof.

Jews, Judaism, And the Reformation in Sixteenth-century Germany
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004149473 | edition 2006 | PDF | 606 pages | 24,7 mb

This book represents a multi-disciplinary approach to the problem of the Jews and the German Reformation. The contributions come from both senior and emerging scholars, from North America, Israel, and Europe, to ensure a breadth in perspective. The essays in this volume are arranged under four broad headings: 1. The Road to the Reformation (late medieval theology and the humanists and the Jews), 2. The Reformers and the Jews (essays on Luther, Melanchthon, Bucer, Zwingli, Calvin, Osiander, the Catholic Reformers, and the Radical Reformers), 3. Representations of Jews and Judaism (the portrayal of Judaism as a religion, images of the Jews in the visual arts, and in sixteenth-century German literature), and 4. Jewish Responses to the Reformation.

Choice Outstanding Academic Title Informed by a broad expertise comprehending all of the disciplines for which human hearing is pertinent. Beament('s) model for the hearing of music...is not only the most speculative section of the book but also the most brilliant. Recommended warmly... it should find a niche in virtually every college, university and professional music library. CHOICE Hearing selected music. By surveying what it selected as western music, this book covers much of the acoustics a student needs, without mathematics or scientific background. It raises many questions about intervals, scales, tone, pitch, loudness and time, and throws doubt on the role conventionally ascribed to harmonics; an account of how musical sounds are coded by the ear and the brain's processing units, provides answers to most of the questions.

Launching Europe
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691033706 | edition 1995 | PDF | 280 pages | 10,5 mb

In this first ethnographic study of the European Space Agency, Stacia Zabusky explores the complex processes involved in cooperation on space science missions in the contemporary context of European integration. Zabusky argues that the practice of cooperation does not depend on a homogenizing of interests in a bland unity. Instead, it consists of ongoing negotiation of and conflict over often irreconcilable differences. In this case, those differences are put into play by both technical and political divisions of labor (in particular, those of big science and of European integration).

Human Insecurity: Global Structures of Violence
Publisher: Zed Books | ISBN: 1842778242 | edition 2008 | PDF | 204 pages | 5,9 mb

Human Insecurity is concerned with our refusal to confront the millions of avoidable deaths of women and children each year. Those missing millions are rarely the subject of conventional security studies, yet such avoidable deaths are a vital part of the notion of 'security' more broadly understood. The book argues that such deaths are caused by the man-made structures of neoliberalism and "andrarchy" and argues that the debate on human security can be reinvigorated by looking at the unarmed, civilian role in causing the deaths of millions of innocent people; from child deaths from preventable disease to honour killings.
