Pour ce cinquième enregistrement en public, Julien Clerc célèbre la sortie l'année précédente de son album "Fais moi une place". On retrouve donc ici les plus beaux titres de ce disque ("Le verrou", "Fille du feu", "Fais moi une place", "Nouveau Big Bang") interprétés en public lors de la tournée 1990-1991. The title of this recording alludes to two things. Swingin' for Schuur features the stratospheric trumpet and flugelhorn master Maynard Ferguson and his 11-piece, high-octane Big Bop Nouveau Band fronting the powerful, two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist Diane Schuur. The title also refers to the no-nonsense, straight-ahead swing emanating from these two jazz giants. Ferguson's high-register trumpet tones add fuel to the fire of Schuur's powerful, Ella Fitzgerald-derived vocals. Together, they both generate enough heat to give old standards such as "Just One of Those Things," "Besame Mucho," and "Deep Purple" a 21st-century sheen. Schuur turns in a bouncy version of Lionel Hampton's seldom-heard ballad "Midnight Sun," and Schuur and Ferguson recast Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life" with a bravura horn arrangement. (amazon.com)

Entre ces deux classiques, défilent quinze autres chansons, quinze autres textes du complice Alain Souchon. L'occasion de redécouvrir les talents de mélodiste et d'arrangeur de Voulzy, qui semble avoir plus écouté les "B" anglo-saxons (Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds) que nos Brel, Brassens et Bécaud. Perfectionniste à l'extrême, il a su se hisser à la hauteur de ses modèles en créant une pop française, simple, sans complexe et touchante. Jazz vocalist Helen Merrill was known for cool reserve and elegant style of swing and she's in fine form here in a superbly recorded live-in-the-studio session. This 1970 album was originally only released in Japan and the repertoire and arrangements are a departure from her standards. Pianist Masahiko Satoh adds jazz-pop sensibilities to the Lennon & McCartney songbook with a bit of psychedelic guitar that marks the time period. Multitalented Brazilian musician Jobim's talent was revealed to a larger world in 1959 by his and Luis Bonfa's score for the film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) in 1959. Songs such as "A Felicidade" and "Desafinado" generated the bossa nova movement of the early 1960s that inspired the likes of Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd and Miles Davis. This 1967 album features Jobim sharing vocals with Sinatra on "The Girl from Ipanema" and "How Insensitive". Three standards--"Change Partners" by Irving Berlin; "I Concentrate on You" by Cole Porter; and Robert Wright, George Forrest and Alexander Borodin's "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads"--round out the program of seven Jobim tunes. Not only did Diane Schuur's pal Stevie Wonder write a new song for Friends for Schuur, but he also sings and plays one of his patented harmonica solos on it. Wonder and "Finally" join some of Schuur's other long-standing friends, including Stephen Bishop, who guests on his "Red Cab to Manhattan." As is the case with Wonder, Bishop singing something new with Schuur is a refreshing event, with her crystal clear voice at each song's center.

Amalia's voice is just incredible. Her tone, her expression, her ability to shade pitch ever so slightly to emote. She's just flat out one of the greatest singers of the 20th century. Fans of fado of course know about her, but she ranks with Umm Kulthum, Judy Garland, Maria Callas, and few others who possess a great voice, seemingly limitless talent, and that most elusive of elements, soul. This recording or some such compilation should be in the collection of everyone who loves vocal music.

This is a collection of Maurane singles, well balanced between her ballads and her more upbeat, full of energy songs. It covers her early recordings influenced by Jazz, some upbeat and humourous ("Danser", "Toutes les mamas", "Pas gaie la pagaille", "Du mal"), others being ballads showing a more sensitive side and a powerfull voice ("ça casse", "Tout pour un seul homme", "Sur un prélude de Bach" - that one being, for real, based on a classical Bach piece) - or how to teach some of today's young divas that singing does not mean screaming, even if you have the lungs for it.

Julien Clerc, on le sait , aime les femmes et elles le lui rendent bien. Mais pour l'heure, une seule retient toute son attention. Celle qu'il est allé chercher est l'une des plus convoitées : Carla Bruni. Les six textes signés par l'ex-top model italien ("Aussi vivant", "Se contenter d'ici-bas", "On serait seuls au monde"…) créent la surprise. La belle s'efface tout en douceur en offrant à l'un des artistes les plus secrets du show-biz, des émotions de femmes. C'est la part de féminité de l'homme qui s'exprime ici à travers de fragiles confidences ("Si j'étais elle"). Mais ce dix-huitième album est surtout placé sous le signe des rencontres. Celles avec l'Américain Umberto Gatica (Mariah Carey, Céline Dion, Michael Jackson) et avec un jeune homme de vingt-trois ans, Khalil (le frère d'Assia, "Quelques mots en ton nom") qui s'illustre déjà dans l'univers soul, rhythm'n blues et hip-hop. On retrouve également les complices de longue date : Etienne Roda-Gil ("Va-t'en de moi") et David McNeil ("Tu t'en es allé"). Une invitation au voyage, enrichie de mélodies sensuelles ("J'oublie"), sucrées ("Va-t'en de moi") et mélancoliques ("L'Horizon chimérique"). Quelques fantaisies, des touches musicales empreintes de funk et de groove ("Aussi vivant"), viennent compléter joliment le tableau.
