...“With the passage of time and the accumulation of experience, the psychological genius of Vivaldi grips us even more strongly than in the past. Today his music appears to us even obviously as a veritable scanner of the human soul, revealing to us with still greater intensity the incredibly timeless character of the protagonists and their problems. More than ever, Alcina, Angelica, and Orlando affirm in our eyes and hearts their stature as our contemporaries. Their strength and weaknesses, their sufferings and joys, seem so palpable that our empathy for them has never been so total. Never hast his masterpiece moves us so deeply.” Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Frederic Delamea

Rossini - La Cenerentola (Evelino Pido, Jose Maria Lo Monaco) [2011]

This 2010 production of La Cenerentola, recorded at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, is set in modern times. On the rather empty, bare stage there are a few elements which stand out: the colourful costumes, the two giant chandeliers and the 1970’s kitchen. Quoting the director’s own words, “the emptiness of the stage leaves room for creativity as the characters keep on changing and disguising their true identity. I have stuck to Rossini’s original notes while neglecting all the legends linked to the character of Cinderella”.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, director Michael Hampe and conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti, in connection with the Schwetzingen Festival, staged the four farsa’s (Il signor Bruschino, L’occasione fa il ladro, La cambiale di matrimonio, and La scala di seta) at the intimate Rococo theater. Fortunately for Rossini-lovers, these absolutely wonderful productions were videotaped.
They are unpretentious stagings with beautiful, elaborate, realistic sets, extravagantly costumed, loaded with witty business, free of gratuitous shtick, and populated with a coterie of bel canto specialists.

Stage director Michael Hampe gives us the opera at the time and location of its original setting—and it’s momentary cause for ironic reflection just how seldom that happens these days. The result, aided and abetted by a fine cast, is an attractive, energetic production of Rossini’s one-act farce. Amelia Felle and David Kuebler deliver the best singing, alert and stylish, with excellent coloratura...

“Sets, costumes and acting are all under sensible direction and there are none of those silly diversionary indulgences that have become so habitual in recent years. There are four good vocal performances: by Elena Zilio and Nucci Condò, both sturdy mezzos; by David Kuebler, an accomplished lyric tenor; and by the grand veteran Carlos Feller... Ileana Cotrubas as the heroine sometimes touches the heart but at this stage in her career rarely delights the ear. Bartoletti and his players do justice to Rossini's score, as do the video director and his crew to the events onstage.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2007

Barely four years into his composing career, Rossini wrote La scala di seta (“The Silken Ladder”). It is the third of his five one-act operas, works created around restrictions in cast size and production limitations. Four of the operas are comedies full of witty intrigues, but L’inganno felice is something apart, being more sentimental in nature. Rossini was in his late teens and early twenties when these one-act gems were written, but his compositional skills and genius for attractive melodies combined with rhythmic thrust were already in place. Rossini - L'Occasione fa il Ladro (Gianluigi Gelmetti, Susan Patterson, Monica Bacelli) [2006]

L’occasione fa il ladro is the most scenically complex of Rossini’s five one-act operas, involving two sets (an inn and the Marchesa’s “Grand’atrio terreno” in her “elegantemente adbabbato” house). In this video, a visual element is added during the sinfonia, a storm scene (the music recycled from La pietra del paragone and later used in Il barbiere di Siviglia). A silhouetted horse and carriage are seen racing through driving rain before a wheel comes off, forcing a stay at the inn. If you’ve ever seen the video of La cenerentola from the Salzburg Festival, also directed by Michael Hampe, it’s the same gimmick. It’s clever and fun to watch.

Rossini - Tancredi (Gianluigi Gelmetti, Bernadette Manca di Nissa, Maria Bayo) [1992/2005] (Re-Post)

This early Rossini opera is so obscure that it doesn't even get a mention in "Kobbe's Opera Book." It's an opera seria in a similar style to Mozart's "Idomeneo." The lead role of the warrior Tancredi was originally a castrato part - here it's performed by a mezzo. Mario Bayo is the standout cast member as Tancredi's love interest. The plot is a typical tale of love vs. duty - it doesn't really matter when and where is it set. Lots of impressive coloratura singing. The production and sound quality are very good. Be sure to wait through the curtain calls, as there is an "encore" of the alternative ending Rossini wrote.

La cenerentola (“Cinderella”) is one of Rossini’s longest comedies, nearly three hours. For any readers who are not familiar with this opera, let me briefly tell you that it bears little resemblance to Perrault’s famous fairy tale. There is no fairy godmother, no pumpkin coach with mice turned into horses, no glass slipper, and no ball at the Prince’s with a midnight curfew. What’s left is a sweet girl, mistreated by her stepfather and vain stepsisters, and a prince in search of a wife...

“The cast is a dream team” wrote the Financial Times after the premiere of this production of Verdi’s La forza del destino at the Wiener Staatsoper. Topping the list is Nina Stemme, who gives a full-blooded portrayal of Leonora. Passionate forceful readings are also provided by Salvatore Licitra as Alvaro and Carlos Álvarez as Don Carlo. Zubin Mehta leads Staatsoper Orchestra with agility, subtleness and relaxed mastery, and right from the start David Poutney establishes an atmosphere of entrapment by fate. With the aid of a bizarre, unforgettable stage construction, the acclaimed director finds an ideal setting to illustrate the merciless powers of chance and destiny.

Bach & Mozart - The Swingle Singers [1998]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 511.64 MB
Classical | Virgin Classics | 7243 5 61472 2 5

Those who remember and enjoyed the Swingle Singers' "do-be-do" take on Bach from years back will enjoy this updated version. Some of the old favorites are here, with a slightly freer approach, along with some new material from both Bach and Mozart. It isn't just scat singing, either. The Singers demonstrate that they can sing the texts of pieces quite well. If you didn't grow up with them, give it a try--it's a great light approach to classical music!

Jascha Heifetz was the prodigy of the twentieth century. Debuting in 1908 at the age of seven, he was known throughout his life for his infallible intonation and the unflappable ease with which he played even the most difficult repertoire. Though he was sometimes maligned as being coldly technical, no one ever said he wasn't amazing. This compilation offers ample opportunities to marvel.

Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme was the eleventh comedie-ballet of Moliere (regarded as France's Shakespeare) and Lully (the first major French opera composer, although he was of Italian origin) and was first performed in 1670. It is regarded as the culmination of their co-operation. This production is claimed to be the first for some centuries to present the work as it would have been seen by King Louis XIV and his court. English speaking audiences familiar with Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme know it as a play. Those of us who are French opera buffs may also be acquainted with the Leonhardt CD of the musical component of the play.

In 1965, Borges and Astor Piazzolla collaborated on an album of tangos and milongas called El Tango. For whatever reason, it was allowed to go out of print and was never transferred onto CD. In 1996, Emmanuel Chamboredon and Envar el Kari decided to “rescue” this work, and they recommissioned a new recording. To assemble and conduct the sizable musical ensemble, Daniel Binelli was chosen – the very bandoneón player who worked with Piazzolla and Borges on the original record. The result was Borges & Piazzolla: Tangos and Milogas, featuring the Argentine singer Jairo and the Chilean actor Lito Cruz, with Daniel Binelli himself on the bandoneón...

Penderecki Krzysztof - Orchestral Works [2001]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Covers | 2cd, 666.5 MB

Krzysztof Penderecki (Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki), born November 23, 1933 in Dębica) is a Polish composer and conductor. His 1960 avant-garde Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima for string orchestra brought him to international attention, and this success was followed by acclaim for his choral St. Luke Passion. Both these works exhibit novel compositional techniques. Since the 1970s Penderecki's style has changed to encompass a post-Romantic idiom.
