Laurence Sterne, «A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy»
BBC Radio | ISBN-10: N/A | English | MP3 (128 kb/s) | 65 Mb

Comic novel by Laurence Sterne, published in two volumes in 1768. The book, a combination of autobiography, fiction, and observations made by Sterne on his own travels, chronicles the journey through France of a charming and sensitive young man named Yorick and his servant La Fleur. (Though the title mentions Italy, the book ends before they reach that country.) The novel defies conventional expectations of what a travel book might be. An apparently random collection of scattered experiences, it mingles affecting vignettes with episodes in a heartier, comic mode, but coherence of imagination is secured by the delicate insistence with which Sterne ponders how the impulses of sentimental and erotic feeling are psychologically interdependent.

Clifford D. Simak's Why Call Them Back from Heaven postulates a time in which all of humanity has been given the right to be frozen and revived after the puzzle of human immortality has been worked out. Those who haven't amassed enough investments to remain "caught up with the Joneses" will find themselves, upon awakening, consigned to an immortal life of poverty, unable to compete...

One of these ''immortals,'' Dallas Barr, has been invited to join a super-elite group calling itself the ''Steering Committee,'' but finds instead that he has been set up for murder. Fleeing with his lover, Maria Marconi, an immortal who has decided to forgo further rejuvenation and therefore will die in a few years, Dallas sets himself on the trail of his would-be assassins, and of the secret someone wishes to keep him from discovering.
