Bestseller Koontz delivers a thriller so compelling many readers will race through the book in one sitting. In the Hitchcockian opening, which resembles that of the cult noir film Red Rock West (1992), Timothy Carrier, a quiet stone mason having a beer in a California bar, meets a stranger who mistakes him for a hit man. The stranger slips Tim a manila envelope containing $10,000 in cash and a photo of the intended victim, Linda Paquette, a writer in Laguna Beach, then leaves. A moment later, Krait, the real killer, shows up and assumes Tim is his client. Tim manages to distract Krait from immediately carrying out the hit by saying he's had a change of heart and offering Krait the $10,000 he just received. This ploy gives the stone mason enough time to warn Linda before they begin a frantic flight for their lives. While it may be a stretch that the first man wouldn't do a better job of confirming Tim's identity, the novel's breathless pacing, clever twists and adroit characterizations all add up to superior entertainment.

More of a mystery than a horror novel, Dolores Claiborne contains only the briefest glances at the supernatural. The novel presents Stephen King as a writer experimenting with style and narrative, time and perspective. Fans looking for a skin-crawling, page-turning fright or an undead bloodbath will be disappointed, but a patient reader willing to savor King's leisurely study of character and island life will find many rewards. And all of this is not to say that the book is without suspense.

He decides that he must travel back in time to right this terrible wrong but his younger self is present in the past and proceeds to challenge the older Artemis's every move.

In this sequel to The Opal Deception (2005), 14-year-old Artemis discovers an unraveling time tunnel connecting demons with the earth. These imps have sworn revenge on humans, and their unpredictable appearances threaten to expose the entire fairy world. As always, Colfer delivers not only continuous action but also witty wordplay and dialogue, understated humor, and plenty of magical technology and gadgetry. A must for kids who have enjoyed Artemis' previous escapades.

King's fans will likely snap up this audio-only recording of King reading an unpublished short story to an audience at London's Royal Festival Hall. King warms up the audience, humorously warning them to beware of possible murderers lurking in the back seat of their cars as they drive home, adding, "I don't want to scare you.... " The story itself is mostly a comical one: a man tells how he gave his wife a cat for a present, and his wife gave him a dog, but each ended up with the other's pet. The antipathy each felt for their own pet (with anecdotes of the dog throwing up in the husband's shoes, the cat clawing at the wife's drapes, etc.) reflected the disharmony in the marriage itself, until the wife walked out. In typical King fashion, the humor turns to horror at the end. King has narrated many of his novels for audio and has an easy, relaxed style that works well here. He easily assumes the roles of both the man and his best friend, who tell different parts of the story, and makes his voice slightly higher for the woman's dialogue. King loyalists should be pleased to add this mid-range item to their collections, but those on the fringes might wonder if the story would perhaps be a better money value as part of a collection.

Grade 5-7–Artemis Fowl has returned to his fiendish ways in the fourth book (Miramax, 2005) in Eoin Colfer's series about the 14-year-old criminal mastermind. Although his mind was cleared of any memories of the fairy world in the third book, it's not long before Artemis encounters many of his old cohorts. His archenemy, Opal Koboi, is no longer an imprisoned coma patient; she escaped by cloning herself and now has plans for the destruction of the Lower Elements and for world domination. Artemis needs the help of all his allies in this world and in the fairy world to stop the powerful and dangerous Opal. Nathanial Parker's superior talent for narration is wonderfully showcased in this rollicking tale of identity theft, intrigue, and adventure. He uses many different British accents and dialects to make both the human and the supernatural characters come alive, and his pacing is faultless throughout the dialogue and the narrative. Fans of the series will be delighted to join Artemis and his associates for another fantastic tale of the underworld, complete with gaseous dwarves and extraordinary technology. A great choice for fantasy lovers in school and public libraries.

King's latest bid for literary respectability is read by acclaimed actress Winningham, best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Georgia. Winningham glazes King's novel in multiple coats of Southern honey, her voice shimmering with an old-fashioned glow for the tale of Lisey Landon, wife of acclaimed novelist Scott Landon, and her effort to discover the source of her husband's inspiration after his death.
