L'action se passe en 1559 dans la forêt de Fontainebleau, durant la négociation de la paix entre la France et l'Espagne : aux termes du traité, l'Infant d'Espagne, Carlos, épousera Élisabeth de Valois, la fille du roi de France, Henri II.
Afin de rencontrer sa fiancée, Carlos est venu incognito en France : au cours d'une chasse organisée par le roi, il croise Élisabeth, accompagnée de son seul page Thibault, alors qu'elle s'est égarée. Sous prétexte de l'aider à retrouver le château, Carlos l'aborde et la conversation s'engage entre eux. Élisabeth lui parle de son prochain mariage et de ses craintes quant au fait d'épouser un homme qu'elle n'a jamais vu. Afin d'apaiser ses inquiétudes, Carlos lui montre alors une miniature représentant l'Infant d'Espagne; à la vue du portrait, Élisabeth reconnait son interlocuteur et un duo passionné réunit les deux futurs époux, duo vite interrompu par l'arrivée de l'ambassadeur d'Espagne en France : ce dernier vient en effet annoncer la décision du roi d'Espagne, Philippe II, qui est veuf, d'épouser lui-même Élisabeth.....

In the royal forest of Fontainebleau, woodcutters and their families gather around a bonfire, lamenting the winter and the war with Spain that have reduced them to poverty and misery. A hunting party from the palace arrives, including Princess Elisabeth of Valois, daughter of the King of France. She asks the people to have courage; she promises that a peace treaty is being signed and that conditions will improve. She leaves with the hunting party.

Don Carlo, the Crown Prince of Spain, emerges from the forest into the now empty clearing. He has caught a glimpse of Elisabeth, his betrothed, and loves her on sight (“Io la vidi”). Elisabeth and her page Tebaldo appear, lost and separated from the other hunters. Don Carlo salutes her and offers his protection....

A Potsdam, une semaine durant, ces deux monstres sacrés du Baroque vont vivre une relation père-fils parfois douloureuse, souvent pleine d'humour. Un combat de titans qui provoque une joyeux tohu-bohu, tant dans le clan des Bach qu'au château du roi. D'abord, les deux maîtres se haïssent, se défient. Et puis, ils s'apprivoisent, s'apprécient, jusqu'à pisser ensemble. Signe de complicité masculine? «Mais ?Mein Name ist Bach n'est pas seulement un film psychologique. C'est surtout un film baroque», a tenu à préciser la réalisatrice.

The Mass in B minor (BWV 232) is a musical setting of the complete Latin Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach. The work was one of Bach's last, although much of it was made of music that Bach had composed earlier. Bach assembled the mass in its present form in 1749, just before his death in 1750. The Sanctus of the Mass in B minor dates back to 1724 (and the model for one parody even to 1714). The Kyrie and Gloria had been composed as a Lutheran Missa in 1733 for Dresden. To complete the work, however, Bach composed new sections of the Credo such as Et incarnatus est. These were his last major compositions.

La messe en si mineur est une œuvre musicale composée par Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 232), pour deux sopranos, un contralto, un ténor, une basse; soit un chœur et un orchestre.
La messe est essentiellement composée d'un assemblage de diverses pages puisées dans différents ouvrages antérieurs du compositeur et réécrites par lui selon le procédé dit de la parodie : par exemple la cantate BWV 12 a fourni la matière du Crucifixus, l'Hosanna est repris de la cantate BWV 215, l'Agnus Dei provenant quant à lui de l'oratorio de l'Ascension BWV 11. Seul un tiers de l'œuvre environ consiste en compositions « originales ». La parodie est un processus relativement courant chez Bach, comme d'ailleurs chez maints compositeurs de l'époque, car c'était souvent la seule manière de donner à entendre de nouveau des pièces que leurs auteurs estimaient particulièrement réussies. La tonalité de si mineur ne concerne en fait que le début du Kyrie et quelques autres pièces.

The Full Monteverdi fut conçu comme une pièce de théâtre vivant, pour l'ensemble Vocal "I Fagiolini", fondé en 1986 par des jeunes chanteurs alors étudiants à l'Université d'Oxford, et qui s'est spécialisé dans la mise en scène du répertoire vocal de la Renaissance et de la musique contemporaine.
Mise en scène et dirigée par John La Bouchardière, cette production théâtrale, basée sur le Quatrième livre de Madrigaux de Monteverdi, fut acclamée dans le monde entier comme l'une des plus surprenantes et innovatrices jamais réalisées pour ensemble vocal. La représentation dramatique de ces madrigaux donne au genre du madrigal une dimension théâtrale insoupçonnée.

In the 1970s Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and Nikolaus Harnoncourt revived the work of Claudio Monteverdi, staging three of his operas in Zurich. This production of L'OREFEO was performed in February 1978 and features Philippe Huttenlocher, Dietlinde Turban, and Roland Hermann in lead roles. The action is based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, who attempts to rescue his dead lover Eurydice from Hades, the underworld.

Drame lyrique dont on a célébré le 400e anniversaire de la création en février 2007, L’Orfeo est considéré comme l'un des premiers opéras de l’histoire de la musique (le premier étant Daphne de Jacopo Peri, dont la partition a été perdue), à la frontière de plusieurs autres genres musicaux comme le madrigal, la monodie accompagnée, le choral et la symphonie. Basé sur le mythe d'Orphée et Eurydice où le héros grec essaye de sauver sa femme des Enfers, l'opéra est composé d'un prologue et de cinq actes.

Le père, la mère et leurs trois enfants vivent dans les faubourgs d'une ville. Leur maison est bordée d'une haute clôture. Les enfants n'ont jamais franchi la clôture. Leur éducation, leurs loisirs, leurs amusements, leur ennui, leur entraînement physique se conforment au modèle imposé par les parents, en l'absence de toute empreinte du monde extérieur. Les enfants pensent que les avions qui volent au-dessus de la maison sont des jouets et les zombies, des petites fleurs jaunes. Une seule personne a le droit de s'introduire chez eux : Christina, qui travaille comme agent de sécurité dans l'usine du père. C'est pour satisfaire les pulsions sexuelles du fils que le père fait venir Christina. Dans la famille, tout le monde l'adore, l'aînée des filles surtout. Un jour, Christina lui offre un serre-tête qui scintille, s'attendant à recevoir quelque chose en retour.

The last work in Mozart's short but prolific life. Receiving a commission to compose a "Requiem" from an anonymous patron, Mozart did not finish the work before his death in December of 1791, but as completed by his pupil Sussmayer, it remains a truly moving mass for the dead which is frequently performed by choirs around the world. Featuring the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Sir Colin Davis.

Originally commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin to celebrate the marriage of the "Sun King," Louis XIV, and Marie Therese of Spain, Cavalli's Ercole Amante took two years to complete and was first performed at the Tuileries in Paris, France, on 7 February 1662. It is Cavalli's only opera written for Paris. With an Italian libretto by Francesco Buti based on Sophocles' The Trachiniae and the ninth book of Ovid's Metamorphoses, Ercole Amante tells the story of Ercole (Hercules) (Luca Pisaroni) who lusts after Iole (Veronica Cangemi), but she hates him for having killed her father. She instead is in love with Ercole's son Hyllo (Hyllus) (Jeremy Ovenden), who in turn is in love with her. Ercole, finding this out, wants to kill his son, but he relents, only after Iole agrees to marry him. Ercole instead imprisons his son in a high dungeon. Meanwhile, Ercole's wife and Hyllo's mother, Deianira (Anna Maria Panzarella) sees Hyllo, in despair, plunge to the depths of the river Styx from his high dungeon and, believing him dead, seeks the aid of Licco (Marlin Miller) who promises to help her and Iole get revenge on Ercole. Just as Ercole is about to marry Iole she saves herself by giving him an enchanted shirt and Ercole is instantly killed. This production at the Het Musiektheater Amsterdam with the Concerto Köln and Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera by stage director David Alden and set designer Paul Steinberg is filled with quaint intentional anachronisms that add to the opera's humor, such as an oddly placed mobile phone, a six-pack of Heineken mini-kegs or Ercole's pro-wrestler action-figure costume. Also making this revival of Cavalli's baroque opera a grand and marvelous achievement is the informed conducting by Ivor Bolton, beautiful vocal performances by Anna Maria Panzarella and Veronica Cangemi along with a charismatic performance by Luca Pisaroni as Ercole...

Ercole Amante is rarely performed and not often thought of as one of the great operas, but this oft-forgotten opera is and was responsible for influencing the French classical scene for decades after. De Nederlandse Opera and Opus Arte are to be applauded for this stupendous and immeasurably enjoyable revival.

This 1954 film adaptation of Boris Godunov is one of the most successful of Russian operatic films. It deftly streamlines the story of the Russain Tsar whose regime and life are threatened by the false Dimitri, a pretender to the throne. Director Vera Stroyeva's apprpach to the opera is distinctly cinematic. Her atmospheric handling of the crowd scenes, juxtaposed with startling close-ups, is strongly reminiscent of the work of her celebrated predecessor, Sergei Eisenstein.

Le Stabat Mater est une œuvre musicale religieuse écrite par Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (Pergolèse) en 1736, deux mois avant sa mort, dans le monastère de Pouzzoles.
Il s'agit donc de la dernière œuvre d'un homme mort à 26 ans des suites d'une tuberculose. Il a été écrit pour deux voix (traditionnellement alto et soprano) et ensemble instrumental comprenant violons I et II, alto et basse continue.
Ce Stabat Mater, basé sur un texte liturgique du XIIIe siècle méditant sur la souffrance de la Vierge Marie, mère du Christ, était une possible commande du Duc de Maddaloni, mécène de Pergolèse et violoncelliste amateur. Une origine alternative suggère en effet une commande de la confrérie des Cavalieri de la Vergine dei Dolori en 1734, voulant remplacer le Stabat Mater vieillissant d'Alessandro Scarlatti dont il conserve toutefois le même effectif vocal, pour soprano et alto. Il devait être donné à Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori, église où le Duc de Maddaloni possédait une chapelle votive et où il faisait exécuter des œuvres religieuses chaque troisième dimanche de septembre.

Stabat Mater is a thirteenth century Roman Catholic sequence variously attributed to Innocent III and Jacopone da Todi. Its title is an abbreviation of the first line, Stabat mater dolorosa ("The sorrowful mother stood"). The hymn, one of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. It is sung at the liturgy on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows.

Guillaume Tell is an opera in four acts by Gioachino Rossini to a French libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte Bis, based on Friedrich Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell. It was first performed at the Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique on 3 August 1829. Based on the legend of William Tell, this opera was Rossini's last, even though the composer lived for nearly forty more years. The William Tell Overture, with its famous finale, is a major part of the concert and recording repertoire.
The opera's length, roughly four hours of music, and casting requirements, such as the high range required for the tenor part, have contributed to the difficulty of producing the work. When it is performed, it is often heavily cut. Performances have been given in both French and Italian.

Guillaume Tell est un opéra en quatre actes de Gioacchino Rossini, sur un livret de Étienne de Jouy et Hippolyte-Louis-Florent Bis, d'après la pièce de Friedrich von Schiller. Il fut créé le 3 août 1829 à l'Opéra de Paris.
Cet opéra, malgré une musique de grande qualité, dure cinq heures en version originale et est donc aujourd'hui rarement représenté, même en Italie. Comme toujours chez Rossini, la partition abonde en airs de bravoure et un baryton ou un ténor y peut briller de tout son éclat.
Seule l'ouverture, pièce de choix dans un concert, est fréquemment exécutée de nos jours. Avec celle du Barbier de Séville et celle de Semiramide, c'est en effet une des meilleures ouvertures du compositeur grâce à ces moments de calme et de douceur contrastant avec des instants violents ou de fougue impétueuse. L'Allegro vivace final de l'ouverture est extrêmement célèbre.
