In post-World War II Japan, a janitor finds a deathly ill boy lying beside a metal candy container. The janitor unwittingly tosses the possession into the night, beginning a most unusual tale of survival set amid the atrocities of war in the Anim? GRAVE OF FIREFLIES. Brother and sister Seita and Setsuko, ages 14 and 4, flee their disheveled home and deceased parents to make their bid for a new life. Before American troops begin to occupy their country, the children resort to dwelling in an abandoned bomb shelter in the countryside. Though these siblings later get a sense of safety, they realize necessities such as food and water will not be easy to come by.

The North Pole: Lars and his friends are having fun exploring a huge icy fish skeleton, but penguin Caruso doesn’t want to join in. Every full moon he gets homesick, longing for the South Pole, and he sings himself to sleep. Older polar bears Brutus, Bert and Boris have had enough of his singing, so while Caruso is sleeping they drag him to the train station and trap him on a southbound train. Greta alerts Lars and Robby who arrive just in time and jump onto the leaving train – and Brutus slams the door shut behind them, trapping them on the train as it sets off. The train eventually arrives at its destination, and in their attempt to get back home, Lars, Robby and Caruso board a ship – but end up being swept overboard.

Chucho, an eleven-year-old boy, lives with his mother in the scientific outpost Darwin Station. He is very surprised to find a little polar bear on the island. With his submarine camera he follows Lars deep underwater into the sea. Lars finds a huge prehistoric fish which has been trapped in a cave. Chucho secretly takes some pictures and publishes them on the internet.

Billboard: Top Soft Rock Hits 1972 is the most enjoyable entry into the series to date, featuring not only lite hits from Bread, Nilsson, Danny O'Keefe, Three Dog Night and Michael Jackson (whose "Ben" still qualifies as one of the strangest singles ever recorded), but a wide selection of hits by singer-songwriters like Carly Simon, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens and Arlo Guthrie, which gives the album more weight and listenability than its predecessors. Still, it would have been nice if Rhino expanded their Billboard discs to twice the size. The disc may cost more that way, but the result wouldn't leave you unsatisfied at the end, which is exactly what these ten-song collections do.
