Der Tod der Maria Malibran (+Bonuses) - by Werner Schroeter (1972)
DVD9 | German | PAL 4:3 | 720x576 | 8000 kbps | AC3 | ~192 kbps | 2 ch | Subs: English+Italian+French+Russian | 6.94 GB
Art-house, Musical, Drama, Comedy, Fantasy

This bizarre film by one of the most original directors now working in Germany is hermetic, expressionist, oblique, and of a creative perversity that bespeaks the presence of a genius. Purporting to deal with a real-life 19th century diva 'whose popularity was such that over-exertion led to her death while singing,' the film is actually a grisly series of frozen or tortured tableaux (predominantly lesbian in implication) of heavily rouged, frequently ugly women who, pretending to sing heavy opera, go through contorted, icy attempts at communication that lead nowhere. The lip-sync is off; the singing is off-pitch; mouths are frequently open while no sound issues forth, or closed, with mellifluous arias or cheap popular songs heard on scratchy renditions of old records.

Deprisa, Deprisa / Fast, Fast - by Carlos Saura (1981)
DVDRip | Spanish + Russian | AVC | 712x460-759x460 | 2330 kbps | Subs: Russian + English | 1.86 GB
Spanish: AC3 | 2ch, 48KHz | ~256 Kbps | Russian: AC3 | 2ch, 48KHz | ~192 Kbps
Art-house, Crime, Drama

Writer and director Carlos Saura here dramatizes the downward slide of four young people who started out with many strikes against them. Their maladjustment to poverty and the broken homes of their childhood results in stealing and serious crime as a way of life. As their dangerous exploits unfold, one of the young men falls in love with the lone female of the four. They take this as it is, without their romance having any effect on their lifestyle. Eventually, all four hit a bad scene when a robbery goes wrong...Saura may be making a broader commentary on the ills of Spanish society here, especially since his earlier films had significant symbolic overtones. This drama won the Golden Bear award as "Best Movie" in the 1981 Berlin Film Festival.

Monsieur Hire - by Patrice Leconte (1989) (DVD5+DVDRip)
DVD5 | French + Russian | 720x576 | MPEG2 | ~5466 kbps | AC3 | 2 ch | 192 Kbps | Subs: Rus (dir comm) | 3.36 GB
DVDRip | French + Russian | DivX | 704x440 | ~1948 Kbps | AC3 | 2ch, 48KHz | ~192 Kbps | Subs: Rus (dir comm) | 1.45 GB
Art-house, Crime, Drama, Thriller

Lonely and shy bachelor Monsieur Hire, suspected in the murder of a girl, secretly watches his young, attractive neighbor Alice through the window. Once, when lightning flashes during a thunderstorm, she notices his face in the window and comes to him to find out what he is after. Patrice Leconte emphasized the psychological drama rather than the detective story and created a film about loneliness and voyeurism; his cold precision is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock or Fritz Lang. The low-key acting and moody soundtrack add a lot, but it's the director who deserves the most accolades, as he manages, with only glances and gestures, to achieve a degree of eroticism that other films fail to reach even through explicit sex scenes.

This is the first biography of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh - both royal, both great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria, but, in temperament and upbringing, two very different people. The Queen's childhood was loving and secure, the Duke's was turbulent: his grandfather assassinated, his father arrested, his family exiled, his parents separated when he was only ten. Elizabeth and Philip met as cousins in the 1930s. They married in 1947, aged twenty-one and twenty-six. A little more than four years later, they were Queen and consort. For almost sixty years theirs have been among the most famous faces in the world - yet the personalities behind the image remain elusive and the nature of their marriage is an enigma.
