Valentin Silvestrov - Bagatellen und Serenaden
Classical Contemporary | MP3 320Kbps | 175 MB | full booklet scans
ECM New Series 1988 | Recorded February 2006

Silvestrov wrote the pieces recorded here, scored for piano solo, string orchestra, and piano and strings, between 1996 and 2005, and they are all representative of his late, meditative, song-like style. After an early career as an experimentalist, Silvestrov embraced the radical simplicity -- a style of tonal, melodic, and rhythmic transparency -- that has won him many admirers in the general public, but little recognition by the academic community. It would be easy to hear his music as derivative, given the limited tonal palette to which he restricts himself; his apparently naïve and artless approach, however, has an integrity and a genuinely lyrical impulse that make it hard to dismiss.

Keit Jarrett / Charlie Haden "Jasmine" 2010
Jazz | Mp3 @320 | 151 Mb | ECM
Release Date: May 25, 2010

Jasmine marks Keith Jarrett's first recorded collaboration in decades other than with his standards trio, and reunites him with the great bassist Charlie Haden, a close partner until the mid-seventies. Intimate, spontaneous and warm, this album of love songs recorded at Jarrett's home, has affinities, in its unaffected directness, with his solo collection The Melody At Night With You. These deeply felt performances should inspire any listener "to call your wife or husband or lover in late at night," as Jarrett says in his liner notes, "These are great love songs played by players who are trying, mostly, to keep the message intact." The program on Jasmine includes such classic songs as "Body and Soul", "For All We Know" , "Where Can I Go Without You", "Don't Ever Leave Me" as well as a rare Jarrett cover of a contemporary pop song, "One Day I'll Fly Away". Jarrett and Haden play the music and nothing but the music - as only they can. As Keith Jarrett says in his liner notes: "This is spontaneous music made on the spot without any preparation save our dedication throughout our lives that we won't accept a substitute... These are great love songs played by players who are trying, mostly, to keep the message intact."

Ryuichi Sakamoto - 1996
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | MP3 CBR 320 Kbps | 303 Mb / 153 Mb | scans 6 Mb
Avant-garde / Electronic | year : 1996 | Label: Milan Records

Review by William Ruhlmann
The album 1996 contains 12 pieces arranged for violin (Everton Nelson, David Nadien, or Barry Finclair), cello (Jaques Morelenbaum), and piano (Ryuichi Sakamoto), including both new compositions and music used in the soundtracks to The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Sheltering Sky, and High Heels. The music is for the most part restrained and reflective, as Sakamoto makes use of the contrasting timbres of the chamber instrumentation, mixing melodic and rhythmic effects soothingly (the exceptions being the more quick-moving "M.A.Y. in the Backyard" and "1919," which uses a barely audible voice and staccato playing to stirring effect).

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Smoochy
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | MP3 CBR 320 Kbps | 334 Mb / 131 Mb | no scans
Avant-garde / Electronic | year : 1997 | Label: Milan Records

Allmusic Review
Inspired by both Brazilian music and the boundless possibilities of the Internet, electronic composer Ryuichi Sakamoto wrote Smoochy, an endlessly intriguing exploration of what happens when the old world meets the future. Using his Brazilian Internet concept as a foundation, Sakamoto goes on to add a variety of other musics, including jazz and Latin pop, to the music, creating a dense and fascinating musical web of electronics and percussion. Occasionally, he gets too self-consciously arty for his own good, but most of the album finds Sakamoto at his best.

Jimmy Scott - Holding Back The Years
EAC Rip | FLAC Tracks + LOG, no Cue | 261 Mb | no scans
Genre: Jazz | Label: Artists Only Records | Release Date: October 6, 1998

There's always something unearthly about hearing Jimmy Scott, the jazz ballad singer whose startlingly high voice stands in marked contrast to the deep baritones, like Billy Eckstine and Johnny Hartman, who largely defined the art. The material here may come as a surprise, too, drawing on the rock era for songs by John Lennon, Bryan Ferry, Prince, and Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, whose work has rarely, if ever, appeared in a jazz context. It's a refreshing change to hear a senior jazz singer breaking with the standard repertoire and to hear these tunes accompanied by an acoustic rhythm section, with occasional touches of strings and muted trumpet. Scott's eerily plaintive voice brings a different poignancy to the gospel-tinged "Jealous Guy" and "Nothing Compares 2 U." This may be novel, but it's also substantial. --Stuart Broomer

Latin | year : 2000 | Label The Orchard

Bola de Nieve (Snowball) was born Ignacio Jacinto Villa (Guanabacoa, 11 September 1911 – Mexico City, 2 October 1971). He was a successful Cuban singer-pianist and songwriter, whose round, black face earned him the nickname by which he was always known
He was an elite rather than a popular figure, a sophisticated cabaret stylist known for ironic patter, subtle musical interpretation, with a repertoire that included songs in French, English, Catalan, Portuguese and Italian. He toured widely in Europe and the Americas, and his friends included Andres Segovia and Pablo Neruda. He was black and gay, self-confident in his personality, and was accepted for what he was: a memorable talent.

7 Seconds - The Best of Youssou N'Dour - Vol 2 (1992 - 2004)
World Music | mp3 224 kbps | 100 Mb | 2004

Amazon.com
Youssou N'Dour has two sides to his career. There's the hard-driving mbalax style that he created by fusing calypso, Latin and pop to traditional Senegalese music. Then there's the (some would say overproduced) world-beat pop that recalls the later work of Peter Gabriel. Falling into the latter category, 7 Seconds is a 16-track collection that draws from two Columbia albums from the early 1990s and a French import of 2000 (Joko (From The Village To Town)) as well as two cuts from a 1994 live-for-radio recording. The most interesting tidbit, however, is N'Dour's near straight reading of the Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," which came out as Japanese-only single in 1996. The duet with Neneh Cherry on "7 Seconds" shows how good of Western pop singer N'Dour is, but he also does well on the soul classic "Don't Look Back," which features Wyclef Jean. This is definitely a strong argument for revaluating N'Dour's poppier material. --Tad Hendrickson
