Joan Baez - Life Peace (2007)

Genre: Folk | Label: Falcon | Covers: Not included

This is a very worthwhile DVD albeit a bit on the short side. It is good to see vintage Joan Baez from 1969 and 1972,also to see the late Mimi Farina as well. Having seen Joan recently and hearing her sing 'Mary Hamilton ' (the first time she has sung it in a concert I have attended) it was lovely to see a very early video of her singing it at Newport. She also sings my favourite song ' Joe Hill ' and also a song about Mimi called 'Sir Galahad'.

John Fahey is one of acoustic music's true innovators and eccentrics. He was a crucial figure in expanding the boundaries of the acoustic guitar over the last few decades. His music was so eclectic that it's arguable whether he should be defined as a 'folk' artist. In a career that saw him issue several dozen albums, he drew from blues, Native American music, Indian ragas, experimental dissonance and pop.

Jansch recorded a solo album called A Rare Conundrum in 1977, with mandolinist Rod Clements and fiddler Mike Piggott as supporting players. When Piggott was unable to go out on a Scandinavian tour, Martin Jerkins hired on to play violin on the dates. They hit it off and Nigel Portman-Smith came aboard to play bass. They toured Europe and America. Bert recalled: “I got to know Martin in that period between the original Pentangle splitting up and the beginning of the eighties. I knew him pretty well and we did a lot of gigs together.
