John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy - Live In Europe (2007)
DVD-5 | Runtime: 60 min. | 3,20 GB | Copy: Untouched
Video: PAL, MPEG-2, 720 x 480 (1.778) at 25.000 fps | Audio: AC-3 at 192 Kbps, 2 channels, 48.0 KHz
Genre: Jazz | Label: Jazz Door | Covers: Not included

This is black and white footage of a short set recorded for German TV. The John Coltrane quintet includes Eric Dolphy on flute and alto sax, and there are some moments of fierce, broiling improvisation as you'd expect from the same line up that recorded Live at The Village Vanguard. However, the camerawork is irritating - much play is made of the angular, futurist-styled studio set, the director framing each shot so that the musician is part of an abstract composition. You can see the thought behind this approach, but in practice it just gets in the way of enjoying seeing the musicians play this music. During one McCoy Tyner solo, most of the shot is of a massive girder cutting across the screen, with the top of Tyner's head peeking above, some distance away. Plus there's only three tunes (but that's a lot of music with this group!) The real treat for me was the solo Lenny Tristano concert that's also on this DVD. It's just unadorned (musically and visually) straight genius.

Steve Miller Band - Live from Chicago (2008)
DVD-9 | Runtime: 110 min. | 6,05 GB | Copy: Untouched
Video: PAL, MPEG-2, 720 x 576 (2.370) at 25.000 fps | Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 at 448 Kbps, Dolby Digital 2 at 192 Kbps, DTS 5.1 at 755 Kbps48.0 KHz
Genre: Pop, Rock | Label: Coming Home Studios | Covers: Included

Fortunately, the camera occasionally finds the stage, event though they aren't the most visually arresting group ever. When they're not standing in place, playing competently, they break out the old stage cliches, like the line-up jam or the venerable guitar solo. Miller is a veteran showman, spreading the spotlight to his bandmates, telling stories and playing to an audience he knows well, which keeps the energy just below rocking out, making the concert into a very comfortable frat party with some fun sing-along tunes.

The collective of Archive was originally formed by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths in 1994 from the ashes of the UK breakbeat act, Genaside II.
Together with the female singer Roya Arab and the young rapper Rosko John, the band released their first album "Londinium" on Island Records in 1996, a mix of dark Trip hop (in a similar vein to Massive Attack), electronica and naturally, their Breakbeat and Hardcore roots, but with the unequivocal match of string arrangements and almost baroque and classically influenced songwriting.
