The Philips recordings of Woody Herman, spanning the mid 1960s, are considered by many to be the greatest of all the Herman Herds with stellar soloists including Sal Nistico, Phil Wilson, Bill Chase and Jake Hanna. This set includes all five Philips albums from the Thundering Herd, as they were known.

Today their experience and maturity make even greater effect, though it seemed that in their previous, more demanding projects, thanks to their talent and great efforts, they had reached their peak. Now listening to sincere music of some other distant lovers of three guitars, it seems that we witness a long sequence of encores, after having listened to a "serious" programme.
