By Luise Abramowski, Alan E. Goodman, "A Nestorian Collection of Christological Texts, Volume 2: Introduction, Translations, Indexes"
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | 1972-05-31 | ISBN 0521081262 | PDF | 241 pages | 3.98 MB

In vol. 2 an English translation is presented with a double apparatus. The first apparatus contains text-critical matters and differences of the Bible text over against the Syriac vulgate. The biblical references, which amount to some 600, are printed in the margin. The second apparatus contains a wealth of explanatory notes and identifies quotations. The editors prefix a valuable introduction consisting of 18 chapters in which they discuss various themes such as the manuscript, its contents, the intention of the compiler, parts of the compilation in separate tradition, a comparison of the text forms of Cyril's Anatbemata, which are quoted three times (1, vi and K ) , the biblical text, and the excerpts of which the collection is composed. At the end of this volume there are indexes of quotations, biblical and patristic, and of subjects and names.
A warm welcome must greet the publication of this corpus of texts, most of which were hitherto unknown or unedited. The collection consists of 12 groups of excerpts, varying in length. Some of them are anonymous. The authors whose names are given are Shahdost of Tarihan (i), Michael Badoqa (m), Henanisho' the monk (vm) and Babai the Great (x). The "chapters" of K and the "theses" of xi are attributed to Nestorius. The group n appears under the authority of the great spiritual writer Isaac of Nineveh.

By Natasha R. Hodgson, "Women, Crusading and the Holy Land in Historical Narrative (Warfare in History)"
Publisher: Boydell Press | 2007-11-15 | ISBN 1843833328 | PDF | 304 pages | 1.6 MB

Narratives of crusading have often been overlooked as a source for the history of women because of their focus on martial events, and perceptions about women inhibiting the recruitment and progress of crusading armies. Yet women consistently appeared in the histories of crusade and settlement, performing a variety of roles. While some were vilified as 'useless mouths' or prostitutes, others undertook menial tasks for the army, went on crusade with retinues of their own knights, and rose to political prominence in the Levant and and the West. This book compares perceptions of women from a wide range of historical narratives including those eyewitness accounts, lay histories and monastic chronicles that pertained to major crusade expeditions and the settler society in the Holy Land. It addresses how authors used events involving women and stereotypes based on gender, family role, and social status in writing their histories: how they blended historia and fabula, speculated on women's motivations, and occasionally granted them a literary voice in order to connect with their audience, impart moral advice, and justify the crusade ideal. Dr NATASHA R. HODGSON teaches at Nottingham Trent University.

Publisher: Selector | 2009-05-15 | ISBN 607453022X | PDF | 248 pages | 2.5 MB

By Yvonne Raley, Gerhard Preyer, "Philosophy of Education in the Era of Globalization (Routledge International Studies in the Philosophy of Education)"
Publisher: Routledge | 2009-09-08 | ISBN 0415996066 | PDF | 246 pages | 1.8 MB

Terrorism, ethnocentrism, religious tension, competition over limited resources, war - these are just a few of the problems and challenges that have emerged in today's global economy. Globalization both implies and requires economic interdependence; and this should bring with it a heightened sense of the interconnectedness of the participating societies. But unfortunately, as recent events indicate, rather than our having formed a global community, today's society is more fragmented than ever. In light of this, education faces some formidable new challenges. How do we prepare future citizens for the world they will live in? How do we teach future generations to embrace the paradox of accepting the value of multiculturalism despite the conflicts it has produced? How do we instill religious tolerance in a time when fundamentalism has become inextricably tied with terrorism? How do we promote economic growth in the face of overpopulation and its depletion of resources? The authors of this collection of essays explore these and related challenges, and they suggest some novel ways of dealing with them.

By Chandra Chari, "Superpower Rivalry and Conflict: The Long Shadow of the Cold War on the 21st Century (Routledge Advances in International Relations and Global Politics)"
Publisher: Routledge | 2010-01-15 | ISBN 0415550254 | PDF | 288 pages | 1.6 MB

Variously described by historians and thinkers as the ‘most terrible century in Western history’, ‘a century of massacres and wars’ and the ‘most violent century in human history’, the 20th century – and in particular the period between the First World War and the collapse of the USSR – forms a coherent historical period which changed the entire face of human history within a few decades. This book examines the trajectory of the Cold War and the fallouts for the rest of the world to seek lessons for the 21st century to manage international relations today and avoid conflict. Written by experts in their field, the chapters provide an alternative perspective to the Western-paradigm dominated international relations theory. The book examines for example whether now in the 21st century the unipolar moment has passed and if the changing economic balance of power, thrown up by globalization, has led to the emergence of a multipolar world capable of economic and multilateral cooperation. It discusses the potential of new cooperative security frameworks, which would provide an impetus to disarmament and protection of the environment globally and asks if nuclear disarmament is feasible and necessary. The book highlights areas in which the potential for conflict is ingrained. Offering Asian perspectives on these issues – perspectives from countries like Afganistan, Vietnam, West Asia and Pakistan which were embroiled in the Cold War as mere pawns and which have become flashpoints for conflict in our century – this book is an important contribution to the ongoing debate.
