The Story of Mankind
Publisher: Book Jungle | ISBN: 1438519141 | edition 2009 | PDF | 489 pages | 34,5 mb

Van Loon was a Dutch/American historian. His The Story of Mankind, a history of the world especially for children won the first Newbery Medal in 1922. Van Loon's writing style is full of antidotes and a casual delivery suited to young readers. The Amazon.com review is as follows. "Anyone who can chronicle world history from 500,000 B.C. to present times--and do so in a lively, entertaining style--deserves a medal. Luckily, the bestowers of the very first Newbery Medal in 1922 thought so, too. The warm, personable tone of Hendrik Willem van Loon's writing lends itself to true learning in a way that stern, dry textbooks never do. In the introduction, he describes climbing a tower in Rotterdam in his youth. Years later, the perspective at the top inspired the author to develop a metaphor of history as a "mighty Tower of Experience, which Time has built amidst the endless fields of bygone ages. This genuinely enjoyable charmer, for history buffs and the historically challenged alike, covers human history from prehistoric times, when our earliest ancestors were learning to communicate with grunts, right through to the issues of the latter 20th century: gay rights, Arab-Israeli conflicts, and health and fitness.

Organic Chemistry
Publisher: Thomson Brooks/Cole | ISBN: 0534373666 | edition 1999 | DJVU | 1376 pages | 13,5 mb

Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: "I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago." Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry book applies to McMurry: It works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that readers who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why. Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities.

Italian Cooking by Dorothy Daly
Publisher: Spring Books | ISBN: N/A | edition 2009 | PDF | 236 pages | 11,9 mb

In the following pages an attempt has been made to offer to the English cook a selection of typical Italian dishes that can be cooked and enjoyed in her own country. It is a compilation rather than an invention, for to 'invent' four hundred 'original' Italian recipes would be not merely an impossible task but an insult to the established repertoire of Italian cooks.

Applications of Fractional Calculus in Physics
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company | ISBN: 9810234570 | edition 2000 | PDF | 463 pages | 27,8 mb

Fractional calculus is a collection of relatively little-known mathematical results concerning generalizations of differentiation and integration to noninteger orders. While these results have been accumulated over centuries in various branches of the mathematics, until recently they have found little appreciation or application in physics and other mathematically oriented sciences. This situation is beginning to change, and there are now a growing number of research areas in physics which employ fractional calculus. This volume provides an introduction to fractional calculus for physicists, and collects easily accessible review articles surveying those areas of physics in which applications of fractional calculus have recently become prominent.

Concepts In Bacterial Virulence
Publisher: S. Karger AG | ISBN: 3805577869 | edition 2004 | PDF | 278 pages | 15 mb

Over the past few decades the increase in bacterial resistance has led to the search for novel antibacterial therapies and a better understanding of virulence mechanisms used by pathogens. It has been shown that the interplay between pathogenic bacteria and the host is complex and finely balanced. Successful pathogens can manipulate host homeostasis and normal cell functions using a variety of molecular strategies. This volume of the Karger book seriesContributions to Microbiologysummarizes some of the most important bacterial virulence mechanisms. Eminent scientists provide an update on recent findings in their fields. This state-of-the-art account will not only attract the interest of clinical and preclinical researchers, but will also be of great value to students with an interest in medicine, biology, chemistry, and infectious diseases.

Arithmetic Geometry
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387963111 | edition 1986 | PDF | 353 pages | 12,8 mb

This book is the result of a conference on arithmetic geometry, held July 30 through August 10, 1984 at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, the purpose of which was to provide a coherent overview of the subject. This subject has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity due in part to Faltings' proof of Mordell's conjecture. Included are extended versions of almost all of the instructional lectures and, in addition, a translation into English of Faltings' ground-breaking paper. ARITHMETIC GEOMETRY should be of great use to students wishing to enter this field, as well as those already working in it. This revised second printing now includes a comprehensive index.
