Presumption and the Practices of Tentative Cognition
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521864747 | edition 2006 | PDF | 198 pages | 11,2 mb

Presumption is a remarkably versatile and pervasively useful resource. Firmly grounded in the law of evidence from its origins in classical antiquity, it made its way in the days of medieval scholasticism into the theory and practice of disputation and debate. Subsequently, it extended its reach to play an increasingly significant role in the philosophical theory of knowledge. It has thus come to represent a region where lawyers, debaters, and philosophers can all find some common ground.

The Large Sieve and its Applications: Arithmetic Geometry, Random Walks and Discrete Groups
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521888514 | edition 2008 | PDF | 316 pages | 13,6 mb

Among the modern methods used to study prime numbers, the 'sieve' has been one of the most efficient. Originally conceived by Linnik in 1941, the 'large sieve' has developed extensively since the 1960s, with a recent realization that the underlying principles were capable of applications going well beyond prime number theory. This book develops a general form of sieve inequality, and describes its varied applications, including the study of families of zeta functions of algebraic curves over finite fields; arithmetic properties of characteristic polynomials of random unimodular matrices; homological properties of random 3-manifolds; and the average number of primes dividing the denominators of rational points on elliptic curves. Also covered in detail are the tools of harmonic analysis used to implement the forms of the large sieve inequality, including the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields, and Property (T) or Property (tau) for discrete groups.

Uniform Spaces
Publisher: American Mathematical Society | ISBN: 0821815121 | edition 1964 | PDF | 175 pages | 13,9 mb

Uniform spaces play the same role for uniform continuity as topological spaces for continuity. The theory was created in 1936 by A. Weil, whose original axiomatization was soon followed by those of Bourbaki and Tukey; in this book use is made chiefly of Tukey's system, based on uniform coverings. The organization of the book as a whole depends on the Eilenberg-MacLane notions of category, functor and naturality, in the spirit of Klein's Erlanger Program but with greater reach. The preface gives a concise history of the subject since 1936 and a foreword outlines the category theory of Eilenberg and MacLane.

Nanoscale Structure and Assembly at Solid-Fluid Interfaces, Volume 2
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 1402078056 | edition 2004 | PDF | 285 pages | 15,2 mb

All of us have read about the vast potential inherent in nanotechnology and the exciting impact it has had in changing our lifestyle in the 21st century. One of the basic issues confronting us is how to fabricate devices or materials on the nano scale. What is the basic physics governing the formation of nano phases? How can biological systems inspire us to formulate nano scale architectures, in the way nature has always done and continues to do? These are two main areas of focus in this book.

Traffic Grooming for Optical Networks: Foundations, Techniques and Frontiers
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387745173 | edition 2008 | PDF | 298 pages | 3,3 mb

Traffic grooming is the name given to a family of optical network design problems that has attracted significant attention from both academia and industry in the last decade or so. The huge bandwidth of fiber optical networking is much larger than the typical bandwidth demands experienced by network service providers. This mismatch creates a need for multiplexing the low rate traffic demands into optical wavelength channels, but this requires costly electronic switching equipment, potentially offsetting the benefit of cheap optical transport.

Scale-Isometric Polytopal Graphs in Hypercubes and Cubic Lattices: Polytopes in Hypercubes & Zn
Publisher: World Scientific Publishing Company | ISBN: 1860944213 | edition 2004 | PDF | 188 pages | 13,2 mb

This monograph identifies polytopes that are "combinatorially R1-embeddable", within interesting lists of polytopal graphs, i.e. such that corresponding polytopes are either prominent mathematically (regular partitions, root lattices, uniform polytopes and so on), or applicable in chemistry (fullerenes, polycycles, etc.). The embeddability, if any, provides applications to chemical graphs and, in the first case, it gives new combinatorial perspective to "R2-prominent" affine polytopal objects.

Fractional Differential Equations
Publisher: Academic Press | ISBN: 0125588402 | edition 1998 | PDF | 340 pages | 14 mb

This book is a landmark title in the continuous move from integer to non-integer in mathematics: from integer numbers to real numbers, from factorials to the gamma function, from integer-order models to models of an arbitrary order. For historical reasons, the word 'fractional' is used instead of the word 'arbitrary'.

Hydrosphere: Freshwater Sytems and Pollution
Publisher: Chelsea House Publications | ISBN: 0816062153 | edition 2008 | PDF | 194 pages | 10,5 mb

Earth is the water planet, but only a tiny amount of the planet's water is fresh and usable, and water pollution has become a monumental dilemma as we enter the 21st century. Though developed nations now regulate some pollutants and as a result their waterways are cleaner, new chemicals are increasingly being released into the environment, resulting in a toxic soup that may be causing cancers, development problems, and other concerns in people and wildlife. And besides pollution, overfishing and engineering projects are destroying freshwater ecosystems. Hydrosphere is a concise examination of the pressing issues affecting our water supply. This potently written and illustrated new book explains how society needs to adopt a precautionary principle in water matters by better understanding the consequences of their actions before, not after, those actions occur.

Functional Equations in Applied Sciences
Publisher: Elsevier Science | ISBN: 044451788X | edition 2004 | PDF | 408 pages | 16,1 mb

The main strengths of this book are (a)its collection of solution methods for standard FE and (b)a substantial number of examples and applications that help make FE more accessible to people who are comfortable with standard methods of analysis (real, complex, differential equations, difference equations) but with little or no background in FE.
