The Seal Cylinders Of Western Asia
Publisher: Kessinger Publishing | ISBN: 1120925894 | edition 1910 | PDF | 462 pages | 35,8 mb

For twenty years I have given a good part of the minutes or hours that could be spared from very engrossing daily office-work to the study of Oriental seal cylinders. I first hoped to be able to master the cuneiform texts, and had begun the study as far back as I862; but the driblets of time which could be taken for it, often with long periods when nothing could be done, were not sufficient to achieve a task which needed all one's time if merely to keep in memory the forms of so complex a system of writing.

On the Plurality of Actual Worlds
Publisher: University of Massachusetts Press | ISBN: 1558490728 | edition 1997 | CHM | 232 pages | 13,8 mb

The postmodern condition is often associated with metaphysical relativism; the suspicion that others live in different worlds and that there are many actual worlds and truths. Through a discussion of the views of other philosophers, the implications for social and literary theory are considered.

Understanding Non-equilibrium Thermodynamics: Foundations, Applications, Frontiers
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540742514 | edition 2007 | PDF | 325 pages | 10 mb

The classical description can however not be complete, as it rests on the hypothesis of local equilibrium. This has fostered the development of many theories going beyond local equilibrium and which cannot be put aside. The second part of the book is concerned with these different approaches, and will be of special interest for PhD students and researchers. For the sake of homogeneity, the authors have used the general structure and methods presented in the first part. Indeed, besides their differences, all these formalisms are not closed boxes but present some overlappings and parallelisms which are emphasized in this book. For pedagogical reasons, some problems have been analysed within the different formalisms to underline their differences and their convergences.

AC Electrokinetic: Colloids and Nanoparticles
Publisher: Research Studies Press Ltd | ISBN: 0863802559 | edition 2002 | PDF | 250 pages | 11,1 mb

Biologists, physicists and engineers are working together to make ever-smaller devices capable of studying the properties of tiny biological particles. Using nano-electrodes, encapsulated in a device with dimensions of a few hundred millionths of a meter, it is now possible to manipulate and trap single nano-scale biological particles such as a virus. The precisely controlled electric fields generated within the device can be used to trap single particles in field-cages or separate different viruses from each other, for example.

A Subject With No Object: Strategies for Nominalistic Interpretation of Mathematics
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0198250126 | edition 2000 | CHM | 272 pages | 11,9 mb

Numbers and other mathematical objects are exceptional in having no locations in space or time or relations of cause and effect. This makes it difficult to account for the possibility of the knowledge of such objects, leading many philosophers to embrace nominalism, the doctrine that there are no such objects, and to embark on ambitious projects for interpreting mathematics so as to preserve the subject while eliminating its objects. This book cuts through a host of technicalities that have obscured previous discussions of these projects, and presents clear, concise accounts of a dozen strategies for nominalistic interpretation of mathematics, thus equipping the reader to evaluate each and to compare different ones. The authors also offer critical discussion, rare in the literature, of the aims and claims of nominalistic interpretation, suggesting that it is significant in a very different way from that usually assumed.

The Interpretation of the Flesh: Freud and Femininity
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0415074495 | edition 1992 | CHM | 288 pages | 11,5 mb

The Interpretation of the Flesh argues that the solution to Freud's ``riddle of femininity'' entails a different approach to mind and flesh, ideas and matter, from that traditionally mooted by Freudian studies. Teresa Brennan states that the riddle can only be solved once outdated assumptions of the dualism of mind versus body are discarded--and such assumptions can only be discarded by a theory that goes beyond biological reductionism. The Interpretation of the Flesh offers a new way of thinking about the relation between the psychical, the social, and the physical, pointing out that the real riddle of femininity is primarily a problem for women suffering from what Freud described as ``femininity's'' negative effects on curiosity, intelligence and activity.

Categories, Allegories
Publisher: North Holland | ISBN: 0444703683 | edition 1990 | PDF | 294 pages | 10,8 mb

This brilliant idiosyncratic book conveys a crystalline insight into category theoretic accounts of structure. The most original aspect is the theory of relations. The approach is spartan in its simplicity. In effect we assume that each relation Rxy has an opposite (as "x is less than y" has opposite "x is greater than y") and suitably matched relations have composites (as the composite of "x is brother to y" with "y is a parent of z" is "x is uncle to z"). We make a few more assumptions none of which involve set theory, and we get a very powerful theory with applications in many situations in logic and category theory.
