Art Power
Publisher: MIT Press | ISBN: 0262072920 | edition 2008 | PDF | 224 pages | 10,5 mb

Art has its own power in the world, and is as much a force in the power play of global politics today as it once was in the arena of cold war politics. Art, argues distinguished theoretician Boris Groys, is hardly a powerless commodity subject to the art market's fiats of inclusion and exclusion. In Art Power, Groys examines modern and contemporary art according to its ideological function. Art, Groys writes, is produced and brought before the public in two ways—as a commodity and as a tool of political propaganda. In the contemporary art scene, very little attention is paid to the latter function; the official and unofficial art of the former Soviet Union and other former Socialist states, for example, is largely excluded from the field of institutionally recognized art, usually on moral grounds (although, Groys points out, criticism of the morality of the market never leads to calls for a similar exclusion of art produced under market conditions).

The Logic of Sexuation: The Logic of Sexuation
Publisher: State University of New York Press | ISBN: 0791460770 | edition 2004 | PDF | 216 pages | 14,8 mb

Ragland definitively buries the notion of a biological basis to gender for Lacan. More importantly, she places Lacan's thinking on this subject of sexuality within a logical structure. Whether or not feminist and other critics agree with Ragland's analysis of Lacan's theory of sexuation and its importance for the psychic structuration, this book will be the groundbreaking work in the field. It stands as the first complete elucidation of Lacan's thinking on how gender choices are inscribed in the human psyche.

Theory of Interest
Publisher: Mcgraw Hill | ISBN: 0071276270 | edition 2009 | PDF | 643 pages | 11,7 mb

The third edition of The Theory of Interest is significantly revised and expanded from previous editions. The text covers the basic mathematical theory of interest as traditionally developed. The book is a thorough treatment of the mathematical theory and practical applications of compound interest, or mathematics of finance. The pedagogical approach of the second edition has been retained in the third edition. The textbook narrative emphasizes both the importance of conceptual understanding and the ability to apply the techniques to practical problems. The third edition has considerable updates that make this book relevant to students in this course area.

This is the first unified treatment of the properties of thermodynamically open and closed systems. It provides the theory and methodology that are necessary to understand nonlinear processes. The section on Classical Systems covers topics ranging from the evolution of probability to open and closed systems and non-Hamiltonian systems. The concluding section on Quantum Systems is equally detailed, treating the evolution of quantum systems, c-number fluctuations and operator fluctuations.

A Course in Econometrics
Publisher: Harvard University Press | ISBN: 0674175441 | edition 1991 | DJVU | 432 pages | 3,5 mb

This book is an excellent choice for first year graduate econometrics courses because it provides a solid foundation in statistical reasoning in a manner that is both clear and concise. It addresses a number of issues that are of central importance to developing practitioners and theorists alike and achieves this in a fairly nontechnical manner...The topics addressed here are rarely given such a thorough treatment in econometrics textbooks. For example, in discussions of bivariate distributions, Goldberger points out that two uncorrelated normal random variables may not be independent, since a nonnormal bivariate distribution can generate normal marginal distributions. Other texts typically leave readers with the impression that two uncorrelated normal random variables are independent without reference to their joint distribution...A Course in Econometrics is rigorous, it makes students think hard about important issues, and it avoids a cookbook approach. For these reasons, I strongly recommend it as a basic text for all first year graduate econometrics courses.

Gröbner Bases is one topic which has recently become a very popular and important area of modern algebra. This book provides a concrete introduction to commutative algebra through Gröbner Bases. The inclusion of exercises, lists of further reading and related literature make this a practical approach to introducing Gröbner Bases. The author presents new concepts and results of recent research in the area allowing students and researchers in technology, computer science and mathematics to gain a basic understanding of the technique. Residuated Lattices: An Algebraic Glimpse at Substructural Logics
Publisher: Elsevier Science | ISBN: 0444521410 | edition 2007 | PDF | 532 pages | 25,3 mb

The book is meant to serve two purposes. The first and more obvious one is to present state of the art results in algebraic research into residuated structures related to substructural logics. The second, less obvious but equally important, is to provide a reasonably gentle introduction to algebraic logic. At the beginning, the second objective is predominant. Thus, in the first few chapters the reader will find a primer of universal algebra for logicians, a crash course in nonclassical logics for algebraists, an introduction to residuated structures, an outline of Gentzen-style calculi as well as some titbits of proof theory - the celebrated Hauptsatz, or cut elimination theorem, among them. These lead naturally to a discussion of interconnections between logic and algebra, where we try to demonstrate how they form two sides of the same coin. We envisage that the initial chapters could be used as a textbook for a graduate course, perhaps entitled Algebra and Substructural Logics.

An Anthology of Russian Folk Epics
Publisher: M.E. Sharpe | ISBN: 0873326415 | edition 1998 | CHM | 464 pages | 10,8 mb

These translations of 30 tales-many of which appear in English for the first time-offer fascinating glimpses into Russian history and culture. While some of the characters may be familiar through recent picture-book retellings, most will be new to readers. Bailey is a respected American scholar of Russian folklore, and Ivanova is a Russian folklorist specializing in epics. In addition to translating the selections, they have written a rich, ongoing commentary on the tradition of the Russian oral epic; they also include a glossary and extensive bibliography. Unfortunately, the illustrations are limited to a handful of black-and-white historical maps and renderings of influential people. Although this volume may have its widest use as a tool for scholarly study, it fills a void in Russian folklore, which has existed for far too long.
