Questions of Time and Tense
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0198236956 | edition 1998 | CHM | 312 pages | 10,6 mb

This book brings together new essays on a major focus of debate in contemporary metaphysics: does time really pass, or is our ordinary experience of time as consisting of past, present, and future an illusion? The international contributors broaden this debate by demonstrating the importance of questions about the nature of time for philosophical issues in ethics, aesthetics, psychology, science, religion, and language.

Stochastic Calculus for Fractional Brownian Motion and Related Processes
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540758720 | edition 2008 | PDF | 398 pages | 11,7 mb

The theory of fractional Brownian motion and other long-memory processes are addressed in this volume. Interesting topics for PhD students and specialists in probability theory, stochastic analysis and financial mathematics demonstrate the modern level of this field. Among these are results about Levy characterization of fractional Brownian motion, maximal moment inequalities for Wiener integrals including the values 0<H<1/2 of Hurst index, the conditions of existence and uniqueness of solutions to SDE involving additive Wiener integrals, and of solutions of the mixed Brownian - fractional Brownian SDE. The author develops optimal filtering of mixed models including linear case, and studies financial applications and statistical inference with hypotheses testing and parameter estimation. She proves that the market with stock guided by the mixed model is arbitrage-free without any restriction on the dependence of the components and deduces different forms of the Black-Scholes equation for fractional market.

Special functions are pervasive in all fields of science and industry. The most well-known application areas are in physics, engineering, chemistry, computer science and statistics. Because of their importance, several books and websites (see for instance http: functions.wolfram.com) and a large collection of papers have been devoted to these functions. Of the standard work on the subject, the Handbook of mathematical functions with formulas, graphs and mathematical tables edited by Milton Abramowitz and Irene Stegun, the American National Institute of Standards claims to have sold over 700 000 copies!

Dobeck and Elliot avoid the pitfalls of commenting on investments or making predictions about financial markets and focus instead on providing an integrated discussion of both historical development and contemporary reality while discussing the historical, philosophical and political-economic aspects of money, financial systems and globalization. They examine the history and evolution of money, monetary policy and central banks, financial institutions, currency and national sovereignty, financial exchanges, technology, capital markets and bonds, the short-term here and abroad, financial derivatives, risk management, regulation and the world to come that goes beyond money.

The Pleasures of Probability
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 038794415X | edition 1995 | PDF | 268 pages | 15,3 mb

The purpose of "The Pleasures of Probability" is to introduce some of the most fundamental ideas in classical probability to a fairly general audience - reaching from mathematical amateurs to scientists, from students to professional mathematicians. The only prerequisites required are a decent background in elementary algebra and an interest in discussions of a variety of problems and applications in probability. The style is informal, and the chapters are more like essays on a particular topic than textbook treatments. Even well-known problems are often covered in more depth than usual in order to illustrate underlying ideas. The book can be used as a text for a first course in probability or as a companion to a text. Each chapter ends with a few problems, the answers to which are given at the end of the book.

Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540723072 | edition 2007 | PDF | 448 pages | 20,3 mb

This practical guide to PIV provides in a condensed form most of the information relevant for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique. In its second edition, the authors updated the chapters on the principles and included information on microscopic, high-speed and three component measurements as well as a description of advanced evaluation techniques. Steve Wereley with his knowledge completed the group of authors of the first edition and his participation as an author was the key for that update. But also the drastic increase in the range of possible applications has been taken into account as the chapter describing representative applications of the PIV technique has been expanded considerably.

Conformal Field Theory and Topology
Publisher: American Mathematical Society | ISBN: 082182130X | edition 2002 | PDF | 184 pages | 12,9 mb

This book gives an accessible treatment for a rigorous construction of topological invariants originally defined as partition functions of fields on manifolds. The book is organized as follows: The Introduction starts from classical mechanics and explains basic background materials in quantum field theory and geometry. Chapter 1 presents conformal field theory based on the geometry of loop groups. Chapter 2 deals with the holonomy of conformal field theory. Chapter 3 treats Chern-Simons perturbation theory. The final chapter discusses topological invariants for 3-manifolds derived from Chern-Simons perturbation theory.

Fully Chaotic Maps and Broken Time Symmetry
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0792355644 | edition 1999 | PDF | 174 pages | 4,2 mb

This is the first book providing an introduction to a new approach to the nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of chaotic systems. It shows how the dynamical problem in fully chaotic maps may be solved on the level of evolving probability densities. On this level, time evolution is governed by the Frobenius--Perron operator. Spectral decompositions of this operator for a variety of systems are constructed in generalized function spaces. These generalized spectral decompositions are of special interest for systems with invertible trajectory dynamics, as on the statistical level the new solutions break time symmetry and allow for a rigorous understanding of irreversibility.

Modelling the F4U Corsair
Publisher: Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1841768804 | edition 2005 | PDF | 80 pages | 17 mb

The F4U Corsair's combat career was longer than that of almost any other World War II fighter aircraft. Its success led to its service around the globe, and it was employed by the US Navy, British Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. After the war, the Corsair also served with the French Navy, in various Latin American Air Forces, and with forces fighting in Korea. This book showcases seven separate Corsair variants modelled across 1/32, 1/48 and 1/72 scales. Among the aircraft featured are an F4U-1 Birdcage, an F4U-1A from VF-17 'Jolly Rogers', a Fleet Air Arm Corsair Mk.II, a Korean War F4U-4 and an F4U-7 French Corsair.

Aristotle (Suny Series in Ancient Greek Philosophy)
Publisher: State University of New York Press | ISBN: 0791456331 | edition 2003 | PDF | 256 pages | 10,3 mb

Aristotle belongs to the small class of philosophers who were not only influential in a particular field of philosophy but also shaped the profile of every philosophical discipline. In this book Otfried Höffe provides a comprehensive introduction to the life and work of Aristotle, covering well-known Aristotelian topics such as ethics, politics, and metaphysics as well as the less familiar, such as biology, psychology, and rhetoric. Höffe also compares Aristotle to other major figures in the history of European (especially German) philosophy, making connections to Kant and Hegel that are particularly insightful. A picture of Aristotle emerges as a philosopher who is much more modern than previously thought, one whose writings are still relevant today and continue to make valuable contributions to many contemporary philosophical debates.
