Sonny Criss - Mr. Blues Pour Flirter (1963)
EAC | FLAC+LOG > 243 MB | 41:44 min | 9 tracks | HF | RS
Audio CD | Jazz | Universal Music France | Reissue of the LP 87719 | Date of reissue 2000

This reissue finds Sonny Criss in Paris in 1963, with a very solid backing band of French musicians; according to the liner notes the album marked the start of Criss's 3-year sojourn in France. On this album Georges Arvanitas switches between piano & organ & sounds in fine form on both, & the disc also affords a fine glimpse of the ill-fated guitarist Rene Thomas. Criss demonstrates his possession of the most sheerly pretty sound among Bird's disciples (sounding like a hybrid of Parker & Johnny Hodges). He sounds good on all the tracks but really comes into its own on ballads like "Daydream" & "God Bless the Child". (The latter can be compared usefully with his later recording of the tune for Prestige on _Portrait of Sonny Criss_.) Other tracks include a rather breezy take on "Saint Louis Blues", a couple blues tracks called "Early and Later" (the 1st is faded out), & various other readings of standards--nothing too fancy, but nothing that sounds less than good.

Known for her delightful delivery and delicate vibrato-less soprano, the Sao Paulo-born vocalist/composer/guitarist is equally at ease on melodic ballads as she is on tongue-twisting sambas. A Cash Box reviewer once wrote that "hearing Ana Caram was like a sweet, sunny, wake up call."

Recorded at Columbia Studio A, New York City on June 29 and July 26,1961

Carmen McRae always had a nice voice (if not on the impossible level of an Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan) but it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretations of lyrics that made her most memorable.

Freddie Hubbard was one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time. Open Sesame was his first album as a leader and this 1960 set finds the 22-year old already sounding like he was a poll winner. Hubbard had emerged from Indianapolis just two years before and, despite a few brief high-profile gigs, including with Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson and the Quincy Jones Orchestra, he was at the beginning of it all when he recorded Open Sesame. No matter, he sounds like a seasoned pro, taking explosive solos on up-tempo pieces, showing warmth and maturity on ballads and displaying a beautiful tone and an adventurous style throughout. Imagine being 22 and playing so brilliantly while McCoy Tyner is accompanying your solos!

If you're a fan of jazz guitar, or if you're a jazz fan who favors sublimely mellow, effortlessly swinging material, this cd is an absolute must. This is as good as it gets. This is the kind of down-home, soulful, understated virtuosity that makes everything seem natural and easy; the playfulness and satisfaction that the musicians obviously feel in playing together is totally infectious. herb ellis' guitar playing is spontaneous, earthy, and bluesy, but also so melodic that you find yourself humming along with his solos after only a couple listens. It is indeed a shame that this isn't available on amazon; i urge you to seek it out.

A Blue Note catalog mainstay from it's debut in 1958, this was another early 12" originally released as "mono only." Now, transferred from the first-generation 2-track stereo masters, the quintet sound is wide-open and spacious. The phrase "all star" does not begin to describe this recording collective. Complimenting Clark's piano are Art Farmer on trumpet. Jackie McLean handling alto, and a rhythm section consisting of Paul Chambers on bass and Phily Joe Jones behind the drums.

Stan Getz meets João & Astrud Gilberto: New York 1964 is a live recording of bossa nova in the making. In 1990, the Giants of Jazz label released a live recording of a 1964 New York City performance featuring Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto, (Joao’s then-wife). The album, entitled “Stan Getz meets João & Astrud Gilberto” is actually misleading, as the trio had met previously in 1963 for the wildly successful recording of “Getz/Gilberto”. The album was released in ‘64 and set off a bossa nova frenzy in the U.S. As a result of the album’s success, the Brazilian Gilbertos and the American Getz played a number of shows in the U.S., such as the one recorded here. Released as part of the “Immortal Concerts” series, this recording exhibits the chemistry the three obviously shared and captures bossa nova in its infancy, as it was still being created and defined.

Sunny Murray, Khan Jamal, Romulus - Change of the Century Orchestra (1987)
EAC Rip | FLAC (separate files) No CUE LOG COVERS - 296 Mb | MP3 320Kbps COVERS - 112Mb | OGG 160Kbps COVERS | HF | RS
Audio CD | Released: 1999 - Genre: Jazz / Avant-garde

At last, Sunny Murray got a well deserved crystal-clear production style for this live document. And he propels the band forward with a lot of conviction. But the band itself is more than extremely motivated to blow your brains out, since such great players like Moncur III and Odean Pope are featured. Special mention goes to the saxophone solo in the beginning of this concert, it seemed so familiar in style yet so original in execution. Yet there is little time spent with the solo until the rest of the orchestra engages in creating maelstroms together, combining catchy themes with free and loud flights. The wonderful work of George Antheil came to my mind sometimes, especially in the more ”cacophonously joyous”-sounding sections. This record is a bit schizophrenic, since the sonorities employed by the musicians bridge serialism, bop and Afrocentric stuff and free jazz and also dark moods with cool moods or inflamed, high-blowing moods in very liberal fashion. This is a keeper for its hyperkinetic performances, and whoever wants to actually hear Sunny in top shape would be well advised to get to listen to this.
