Dietmar Tutsch, Performance Analysis of Network Architectures
Springer | ISBN: 3540343083 | September 15, 2006 | 244 pages | PDF | 2.5 MB

Parallel and distributed computer systems are built to close the gap between the demand for high-performance computing and the computing power available using standalone single-processor machines. Traffic in networks connecting such systems is typically characterized by its distribution in time and space. Three approaches can be applied to determine the related network performance: measurement, simulation, and mathematical methods. Dietmar Tutsch first introduces various network architectures that are widely proposed for parallel and distributed systems as well as for systems-on-chips including multicore processors. Their advantages and drawbacks are compared. Then, he gives an exhaustive survey of the available modeling techniques, including mathematical methods like Markov chains and Petri nets, and simulation methods. The main problems in modeling networks are that models are usually too large to be handled by a computer system, and, due to model complexity, model development is very time consuming. As a solution, the author systematically presents methods for complexity reduction, thus reducing the development time considerably.

The Math Problems Notebook
Birkhäuser Boston | ISBN: 0817645462 | Aug. 2007 | 236 pages | PDF | 1.7 Mb

The Math Problems Notebook is a collection of nontrivial, unconventional problems requiring deep insight and imagination reminiscent of those discussed at Sunday Math Circles. These circles have become a place for disseminating beautiful mathematics at an elementary level for college students who have a common passion for mathematics. The problems cover many topics, including number theory, algebra, combinatorics, geometry and analysis, of varying levels of difficulty. The presentation of each topic begins with simple exercises and follows with more difficult problems, challenging enough even for the experienced problem solver. The easier problems focus on basic methods and tools, while the more advanced problems develop problem-solving techniques, intuition and promote further research.

Design of Masonry Structures
Taylor & Francis | 272 pages | ISBN: 0419215603 | Jan. 1997 | PDF | 5Mb

Interest in stuctural masonary has increased significantly in recent years. As a result more advanced codes of practice for the design of buildings in brickwork have been introduced in many countries. Design of Masonary Structures covers in particular the structure and content of the British code BS 5628 and the Eurocode EC6. Although the book is written with reference to the British and European codes, the principles described have general application and exemplify structural masonry design based on a limit state approach. The opening chapter provides a sound understanding of materials properties and relevent structural principles, the basis for successful use of any design code. Next the author gives a detailed description of the British and European codes. The design of elements under compression, shear and lateral load is discussed, as are reinforced and prestressed members and masonry walls acting compositely with reinforced concrete or steel structures.
