Inkpen's flair for creating affable animal characters is again evident in this brief tale of a dog who, in a fit of housecleaning, clears his stuffed rabbit, ball, bone and "smelly old blanket" out of his basket. But unable to get comfortable in his empty sleeping quarters, he ventures outdoors to find a new resting place. Kipper attempts to squeeze into a flowerpot, where some wrens have nested; make a nest of sticks, just like the squirrels; snuggle down in the grass, alongside a sheep; and balance, frog-like, on a lily pad. Finally the frustrated pooch rushes indoors, where he hides under "his lovely old smelly blanket" and curls up amid his well-worn possessions. With its large print and short, perky sentences, this warmhearted, there's-no-place-like-home story is well suited for beginning readers. It's also a satisfying read-aloud for littler ones. Ages 3-8.

PreSchool-- "Plees come to my birthday party tomoro at 12 o cloc don't be lat" read Kipper the dog's invitations to his friends. But he gets so tired preparing for the celebration that he decides to deliver his invitations the next day. When nobody comes to his party, he eats his cake himself, falls asleep, and is awakened by a knock at the door--his guests have arrived--a day late. After some confusion, his friend Tiger explains, " 'Your birthday must have been tomorrow the day before yesterday . . . So yesterday it would have been today , but today it was yesterday." (This explanation may tend to confuse adults as well as children!) All is resolved happily when Kipper unwraps his presents, and the party begins. Kipper and his friends are depicted with humor and personality. The pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are lively, and the layout is pleasing. The question is, who's the book's audience? It is debatable whether preschool children will understand the point, and first and second graders will find it too simple in story line. Don't give up on other "Kipper" stories, but skip this one.

Jumping out of his basket with a "Yes! Yes!," Kipper enthusiastically greets the day, where the snow awaits him. Upon discovering the joy of making body images (dog angels?), the pup runs off to find his best friend Tiger, a Scotty. The two spend the day on the hill, leaving behind a giant snow dog. Despite Tiger's repeated warning that a warm wind is coming, their creation lasts for three weeks.

Kipper the dog is bewildered by the hole chewed in his cardboard toy box. His attempts to count his toys frustrate him because instead of the usual six, he comes up with seven or eight. Then Sock Thing disappears. During the night the mystery is solved when Kipper discovers two mice in the missing sock creature. Instead of nibbling his box for their nest, they join Kipper in his basket.

'Hotline' contains features such as: guided writing sections; activities cross-referenced to a grammar reference section; and reading texts recorded on to cassettes to provide a pronunciation model. It encourages students to take more control of their learning needs.
