Junkers Ju 88 Kampfgeschwader in North Africa and the Mediterranean

John Weal, «Junkers Ju 88 Kampfgeschwader in North Africa and the Mediterranean»
Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1846033187 | October 20, 2009 | PDF | 96 pages | 45.8 MB

This volume follows the Luftwaffe's twin-engined Wunderbomber southwards to describe its deployment in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater, from the Straits of Gibraltar in the west, via the beleaguered island of Malta, to the Aegean and the Suez Canal in the east. It is a story of two distinct parts - the initial lightning successes, and then the long, slow process of retreat and defeat. It began early in 1941 with the first sporadic air raids on Malta, followed in the spring by the campaign in the Balkans which resulted in the conquests of Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete. After supporting land operations in North Africa during the latter half of 1941, the Ju 88s resumed their assault on Malta.

The Great Locomotive Chase - The Andrews Raid 1862

Gordon Rottman, «The Great Locomotive Chase - The Andrews Raid 1862»
Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1846034000 | November 17, 2009 | PDF | 64 pages | 39.3 MB

In April 1862, the stage was set for one of the greatest locomotive chases in history. Union forces planned to steal a train and travel at high speed to Chattanooga, Tennessee, disabling the line as they went, in order to cut off vital rail supplies to the Confederate stronghold of Atlanta, Georgia, some 100-plus miles to the southwest. What they hadn't banked on was the dogged determination of one man, train conductor William Fuller, who, after realizing his train had been stolen, began a frantic pursuit, first by handcar, then by top-speed locomotive, dealing with derailments by running miles on foot to the next station, and single-handedly removing drag ties from the track in front of his train. The raiders were so hotly pursued that they had no time to inflict serious damage on the tracks and could not stop to gather more fuel. Just north of Ringgold, some miles south of Chattanooga, The General ran out of wood and the raiders scattered into the forested Appalachian Mountains. All were captured within days and sentenced to death. Discover the history of one of the most colorful and dramatic episodes of the Civil War as Gordon L. Rottman expertly recounts this incredible tale of sabotage, robbery and raiding on the rail lines of the Deep South.

The First Battle of the Marne 1914

Ian Sumner, «The First Battle of the Marne 1914»
Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 1846035023 | May 25, 2010 | PDF | 96 pages | 55 MB

The battle of the Marne was one of the decisive encounters of the World War I, saving France from a catastrophic defeat that would almost certainly have knocked her out of the war. Germany's failure to defeat the French committed her to a war on two fronts, which would lead to trench warfare and the war of attrition that the General Staff had hoped to avoid. The conduct of the battle served to make and break the reputation of commanders and subordinates alike. Although not an decisive defeat, the battle was a strategic Allied victory. Further attempts by each side to outflank the other led to the formation of a continuous front from the North Sea to Switzerland, which set the pattern for the rest of the war.
This title presents the origins of the campaign, followed by a brief chronology, before detailing the opposing commanders and armies. It then breaks out the French orders of battle and the German's opposing plans, the outcome of the fighting and the aftermath of the battle. The book concludes with a look at the battlefield today and suggestions for further reading.

Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero

Dr. E. Paul Zehr, «Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero»
The Johns Hopkins University Press | ISBN: 0801890632 | November 7, 2008 | PDF | 328 pages | 2.3 MB

What are the odds that an ordinary billionaire like Bruce Wayne could acquire the physique and hand-to-hand fighting skills to defeat supervillains? Zehr, a Canadian neuroscientist and martial arts black belt, looks at the science of the body's capability to respond and adapt to... extremes. The author draws on Batman comics and movies to glean clues on how Wayne chiseled his body into a fighting machine. As a study of human physiology, this detailed and accessible discussion could appeal to Batman fans and those interested in intensive physical training who are prepared for serious science rather than fantasy. But Batman is only the scaffolding on which Zehr hangs his detailed look at the role of genetic makeup, diet, strength training and development of motor skills in attaining the outer limits of physical performance. Surprisingly, the discussion barely mentions the training of real-life people who need many of the same skills as Batman: special ops forces. Despite the book's strengths, readers may get the impression from the many exclamatory asides of an author still running around the house with a bedspread trailing behind him.

Vampire Gehenna: Final Night

Ari Marmell, «Vampire Gehenna: Final Night»
White Wolf Publishing | ISBN: 1588468550 | January 14, 2004 | PDF | 352 pages | 2,5 MB

Ari Marmell has been writing more or less constantly for the past ten years, though he’s only been paid for it for the past three. (Whether that makes him determined or simply pigheaded is a matter of perspective.) He is the author of multiple roleplaying game supplements, for both the World of Darkness and everyone’s favorite fantasy game system. He likes both games very much, and doesn’t care that you don’t. Vampire: Gehenna, The Final Night is his first novel. Ari lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife George, two cats, and seven different neuroses. (If you’d like to adopt one of the neuroses, they’re looking for good homes.)
What do you say—who do you thank—in your first published novel? If Philippe gave me an entire chapter for it, I’m not sure I could say everything I want to. So, in brief, or as brief as I can, heartfelt thanks: To Ryan, Ron, Gary, both Jasons, Jamie, and Jerel, who gamed with me for many a year and encouraged me to write if that’s what I wanted to do. To my mother, Carole, for all the mother-type reasons. To my sister, Naomi, for brutal (and ultimately helpful) honesty. To my wife, George, for patience above and beyond the call. To Philippe Boulle, for encouraging what was good and helping correct what was—well, less good. To Professor Robisson (who will never see this and wouldn’t remember me anyway, but I’m doing it because I told him I would), for being honest and for being wrong.

Christian Doctrines in Islamic Theology

David Thomas, «Christian Doctrines in Islamic Theology»
Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004169350 | August 15, 2008 | PDF | 392 pages | 1,9 MB

By the tenth century Islamic theology had become an integrated system by which theologians constructed sophisticated accounts of the nature of the world and God's relationship with it. They also used it to establish proofs that Islam was the only rationally tenable form of belief, building these in part on proofs of the illogicalities in other faiths, including Christianity. Through excerpts from key works of the theologians al-Nashi' al-Akbar, al-Maturidi, al-Baqillani and 'Abd al-Jabbar, this book shows how Muslim theologians in this period made use of Christian doctrines as examples of misguided thinking to help confirm the correctness of their own theology, and how among Muslim theologians Christianity had ceased to attract serious attention as a rival to Islam.
