Handbook of Single Molecule Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Oxford University Press, USA | 280 pages | 2006-09-20 | ISBN: 0198529422 | PDF | 3.31MB

Analytical measurements at the single molecule level under ambient conditions have become almost routine in the past few years. The application of this technology to fundamental studies of heterogeneity in biomolecular structure and dynamics, chemical and biological reaction kinetics and photophysics provides a rich playground for molecular scientists. The potential use of single molecule detection for nanotechnology and quantum information processing is a new and almost unexplored area. This handbook is intended for those interested in a practical introduction to single molecule investigations using fluorescence techniques and places special emphasis on the practicalities of achieving single molecule resolution, analyzing the resulting data and exploration of the applications in biophysics. It is ideal for graduate research students and others embarking on work in this exciting field.

Aswath Damodaran “The Dark Side of Valuation"
FT Press | 2001-02-15 | ISBN: 013040652X | PDF | 350 pages | 1,7 Mb

Suddenly, technology companies represent nearly 30% of the S&P 500, more than triple their representation just six years before. Investors and analysts concerned with valuing them face unprecedented challenges: many firms have limited histories, a shifting business mix, a highly volatile stock price, and massive uncertainty over the ultimate size of their markets. In this book, one of the world's leading experts in valuation reviews every approach, demonstrating exactly how to adapt traditional techniques to minimize technology company valuation risks -- and maximize returns. Aswath Damodaran reviews how investors and analysts have responded to the massive market shift towards technology stocks, then identifies key valuation principles and techniques through five representative case studies: Motorola, Cisco, Amazon, Ariba, and a new IPO-ready startup. He shows how to adapt traditional valuation techniques to technology stocks with limited histories, shifting business mixes, and volatile stock prices. He identifies key limitations of the accounting definitions in measuring tech company cash flows; then develops superior processes for estimating future revenues, earnings, and cash flows. And, finally, Damodaran carefully evaluates the extraordinary claims that have been made for technology companies, and considers how valuation impacts the way technology companies are managed.

Economic Transformations: General Purpose Technologies and Long Term Economic Growth
Publisher: Oxford University Press | Pages: 616 | Date: 2005-12-09 | ISBN: 019929089X | PDF | 7,6 MB

This book examines the long term economic growth that has raised the West’s material living standards to levels undreamed of by counterparts in any previous time or place. The authors argue that this growth has been driven by technological revolutions that have periodically transformed the West’s economic, social and political landscape over the last 10,000 years and allowed the West to become, until recently, the world’s only dominant technological force. Unique in the diversity of the analytical techniques used, the book begins with a discussion of the causes and consequences of economic growth and technological change. The authors argue that long term economic growth is largely driven by pervasive technologies now known as General Purpose (GPTs).

This is a good text for International Finance. Written from a British point of view, at first it was a bit more tricky to comprehend the forex problems and conversions, but in the end it made things a lot easier learning it from another perspective that is normally given in the wall street journal, etc. It has a nice section on the recent debt and Asian financial crisis.

Uncertainty and Risk: Mental, Formal, Experimental Representations (Theory and Decision Library C)
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 312 | Date: 2007-07 | ISBN : 3540489347 | PDF | 3,8 MB

We all feel that our world is fundamentally uncertain. But less unanimity emerges as to what we mean by “uncertainty” and how we ought to adjust. Businessmen tend to be “cautious” and engineers to pick up the “right” decision criteria among the many available in the literature, without having much justification about their respective behaviors. This book tries to sort out the different meanings of uncertainty and to discover their foundations. It shows that uncertainty can be represented using various tools and mental guidelines. Some decision criteria are then related to each case and assessed. Alternative ways to deal with risk - and risk attitude concepts - are then examined in the above perspective. Behavior under uncertainty emerges from this book as something to base more on inquiry and reflection than on mere intuition.

Property Rights: A Practical Guide to Freedom and Prosperity (Hoover Institution Press Publication)
Publisher: Hoover Institution Press | Pages: 94 | Date: 2003-02 | ISBN: 0817939121 | PDF | 581kb

The idea that property rights provide the foundation for a free society has long been understood. To those who penned the Magna Carta in England, as well as to the American Founding Fathers who drafted the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, protecting private property was of utmost importance. Today, however, property rights are being threatened by a variety of state, national, and international forces. The U.S. Supreme Court, for example, dealt property rights protection a significant setback in a case concerning property near Lake Tahoe, ruling against landowners and holding that they were not entitled to compensation for losses caused by regulatory restrictions. Although the Tahoe case pales in comparison to some of the takings by tyrannical governments in other parts of the world, it illustrates the necessity of vigilance and of understanding the relationship between secure property rights and a free society. This book seeks to explain the crucial connection between secure property rights, freedom, and prosperity.
