Sabicas with Joe Beck - Rock Encounter (1970) [Reissue 2006]
EAC Rip | FLAC (image+.cue+log) - 321 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Flamenco Rock, Progressive Rock | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Long Hair (LHC00048)

An unique and very interesting musical project from 1966, probably the first musical encounter between flamenco and rock music! In those days Joe Beck was a respected composer and rock guitarist, he had played in symphonic orchestras and performed with the top names in rock and jazz (from Tim Hardin to Steve Gadd). After making the album Middle Eastern Rock with Oud player John Berberian, Joe's producer Harvey Cowen suggested Joe to do the same with flamenco and rock. He succeeded to recruit flamenco guitar legend Sabicas (1912-1990), thanks to Sabicas' brother Diego because he wanted Sabicas to scout the musical boundaries.

Novalis is the nom de plume of the early romantic poet, Karl Friedrich von Hardenberg, and inspired the Hamburg musicians Heino Schünzel (bass), Jürgen Wenzel (vocals, guitar), Lutz Rahn (keyboards) and Hartwig Biereichel (drums) when they set about looking for a band name in autumn 1971. May 1973 saw the release of their debut, Banished Bridge, which had been recorded in English. Starting with the arrival of their second album, released in April 1975, their use of German lyrics ensured the band's constantly growing popularity.

Johnny Griffin & Lockjaw Davis - In Copenhagen (2007)

Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis locked horns and raised a little hell during this exciting blowing session that took place at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen on July 10, 1984. They were aided and abetted by pianist Harry Pickens, bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Kenny Washington - the same rhythm section that had performed with Griff at the Berlin Friedrichstadtpalast nearly a month earlier. The original "Tough Tenors" formula dates back to the early '60s when Griff and Jaws collaborated on a series of definitive, mainstream two-tenor albums.

Manuel Göttsching - Dream & Desire (1991)
EAC Rip | FLAC (image+.cue+log) - 359 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 175 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Electronic, Berlin School | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Musique Intemporelle (883 598-907)

The '70s were a fertile period for Manuel Göttsching. Having pioneered the kosmische guitar freakout with Ash Ra Tempel, he had embarked on a new phase by mid-decade. Inspired by minimalist composers Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, Göttsching traded musical visions of outer space for trance-inducing meditations on inner space. Between 1974 and 1977, Göttsching pursued this new aesthetic on Inventions for Electric Guitar, Le Berceau de Cristal, New Age of Earth, and Blackouts, immersing himself in an electronic environment that often fused his signature guitar work with sequencers and synths. Although not released until 1991, Dream & Desire was recorded in 1977.

Midnight Circus - Midnight Circus (1972) [Reissue 2003]

Genre: Progressive Folk Rock | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Citystudio Media Production (CMP 602-2)

A very obscure and difficult to locate album produced in Germany in the early-70's. This is a dreamy progressive folk album that appears to be a duo augmented by sessions musicians (in the manner of Witthuser + Westrupp but with vocals sung in English). The album does venture out into a tougher rock sound at times while at others it will float on a bed of mellotron sound which hazily recalls the sound of early King Crimson or The Moody Blues. A very interesting and rare album which is well worth a listen.

Johnny Griffin - Chicago, New York, Paris (1995)

This album celebrates Johnny Griffin's fifty years in the business by utilizing repertoire with a musical affinity for each of these great cities of the world. Chicago is represented by blues and blues-based material, The JAMFS, and Leave Me Alone. The New York tracks have a be-bop orientation with the original compositions Do It and Not Yet, as well as Johnny's reworking of the standard Without A Song. Paris provides the record's romantic inspiration with To Love, You Must Believe In Spring, and, of course, My Romance.

Rebekka - Phoenix (1982) [Reissue 2008]
EAC Rip | FLAC (image+.cue+log) - 380 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 169 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Progressive Folk Rock | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Musea/MALS (MALS 280, FGBG 4083.AR)

With a history going back to 1971, Rebekka had a lot of time to become the refined and unique progressive they were. A Bavarian combo, starting with heavy rock, moving on to folk and Indian ragas in the mid-1970's, becoming Rebekka proper in 1977. Having female vocals (sometimes in English, sometimes in German) and taking on influences of classical and folk musics, like early Renaissance, as well as ethnic and Indian musics, their debut Phoenix sounded like a symphonic progressive twist on early Hölderlin. In demand for theatre productions and such like, Rebekka were off the scene for some time, until Phoenix was rediscovered and gained a repress.

Johnny Griffin with Strings and Brass - White Gardenia (1961)
EAC Rip | WavPack (image+.cue+log) - 257 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 109 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Jazz | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Riverside Records (OJCCD-1877-2), 1995

Tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin pays tribute to Billie Holiday. Griffin is joined by a brass section (either five or seven pieces), plus a rhythm section and strings (the latter dominated by cellos), for his warm interpretations of nine songs associated with Billie Holiday, plus his original "White Gardenia." The arrangements, provided by Melba Liston and Norman Simmons, are tasteful, and the lyrical music is well-performed, if not overly memorable.

Peter Bursch und die Bröselmaschine - Bröselmaschine 2 (1976) [Reissue 2005]
EAC Rip | FLAC (image+.cue+log) - 327 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Progressive Folk Rock | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: ZYX Music (OHR 70045-2)

On the softer side of krautrock, Bröselmaschine are sometimes considered "krautfolk" a more unique subgenre. Lots of flute, acoustic and sometimes electric guitar, sitar, tabla and other hand drums. After six adventurous and successful years the original and first line-up disbanded in 1974. Some members went to India whilst others moved to the countryside (all members came originally from Duisburg). That was when the founders Peter Bursch and Willi Kissmer reformed Bröselmaschine. Klaus Dapper, a sax player and flutist from the jazz scene, joined as a new member.

Johnny Griffin Quartet - Live In Tokyo (1976)
EAC Rip | WavPack (image+.cue+log) - 341 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 158 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Jazz | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: ITM-Media (ww 2068), 1991

One of the most hard-burning Johnny Griffin records of the 70s – a cooking live se recorded in Tokyo, with energy that's much more freewheeling and open than his studio records of the time! Joined by pianist Horace Parland, bassist Mads Vinding and drummer Art Taylor for this Tokyo concert, Griffin digs into three standards and a pair of his originals; all except for a rapid "Wee" are at least 16 minutes long. Griffin's long cadenza on "The Man I Love" is a highlight.

Eric Bell - Belfast Blues In a Jar (2012)

When Thin Lizzy first started Eric played the Blues to enthusiastic crowds in bars and clubs around Belfast, before "Whiskey In The Jar" became a huge hit and propelled the band, and especially front man Phil Lynott, to legendary stardom. But Eric never gave up his love for Blues music, and has now returned to his musical roots, revisiting songs from Blues heroes such as the three Kings of the Blues; Albert, B.B. and Freddy, as well as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Albert Collins and Elmore James.

This nearly hour-long set by Johnny Griffin comes from a 1978 concert in Warsaw. The Little Giant is in great form, though the track listing on the rear of CD is bound to confuse first-time listeners. The opening set begins with a four minutes of a chant-like vamp, before segueing directly into a lively arrangement of "A Night in Tunisia," which will definitely surprise anyone expecting "Body and Soul" (which is incorrectly labeled as track one); both pianist Pat Coil and drummer Art Taylor are also featured to good effect. Griffin's explosive take of "All the Things You Are" takes no prisoners, following it with lyrical interpretation of "Body and Soul."

Big James And The Chicago Playboys - The Big Payback (2012)
EAC Rip | WavPack (image+.cue+log) - 348 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps (LAME 3.93) - 135 MB | Covers includes
Genre: Blues | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Blind Pig Records (BPCD 5143)

This exhilarating blues recording was captured at the historic Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in Paris. James and the band perform with an infectious enthusiasm and verve, and the crowd responds in kind. In addition to three of James's blues-tinged original tunes, the program ranges from the killer James Brown groove of the title cut to the soul classic "Trying To Live My Life Without You," a couple of Magic Sam gems, George Clinton's "I'll Stay," to the funky, set closing instrumental version of Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water." "The Big Payback" is an unalloyed pleasure, a joyous celebration of the great tradition of horn-based blues ensembles.
