“From the first bars of the Overture you will hear a sound like none on any other version of this opera. As he explains in a note in the accompanying booklet. Harnoncourt has attempted to go back to the timbre for the Turkish music that Mozart apparently intended. Thus, there is a flageolet in G providing a harsher sound than a normal piccolo, piatti (small, saucer-shaped instruments) for the cymbals, cast in bronze with pitched notes, and a tamburo turco. The result, here in the Overture, in the Janissaries chorus and in "Vivat Bacchus" is much more primitive, more aggressive than that produced by conventional instruments. It gives a startlingly raw effect that seems right to me. Other, more minor amendments include different horn pitches from those to which we are accustomed and clarinets in C.”
